Re: My "Shop"

Having the new door installed I had to clear stuff from sides. This was a good time to show and deal with theses area. Now the storage wall side wasn't bad
94e4304dbdb3479cb4004f4d9db1c131.jpg

Only thing I store there is a pole saw and my jack handle
ea497a8d6891062761cb1a60cfe70dbf.jpg

Now the workbench side is WHOLE other story. This side had my transformers for my outdoor lights, my sprinkler control panel, some levels and metal rulers. This gave me a chance to deal with my UGLY.

First, I had to deal with my outdoor lighting transformers. I upgraded lights and only had 2 transformers which put out close to 400 watts combined. Now those transformers died and instead of buy new I had 3 new in boxes from the new lights so with my design and wiring I did I went with 4 and they been working for months in that setup so ( 2 for m spot lights and 2 for path lights )
So here's what I came up with.

a7b7a71e760ec4fb0863b2d936187f9c.jpg

Ok how my setup work is that all the transformers plug into the strip bar and then the strip bar into a outdoor timer. Here it is in its new home
b3ba2d7b747c47078742fd348d9fb38b.jpg

I padded out the wall to run wiring behind the panel then into the electrical boxes.
4ccdfb06adbd41660dcff459ba824301.jpg

Now I had to move my sprinkler timer to allow my cabinet door to swing open so I moved it to here

a1a790425d46aeace293c9858f50463a.jpg

Now with sprinkler timer moved I can now see difference.

0ddf1c836f940799e9b5a60584ece779.jpg

Now I can open door a little more

25126a8aab5dbecf146b698ee7a82222.jpg

It's a ton of work just to do transformers and sprinkler timer but it's been worst spot in the garage and having door installed I figured it was time to finally deal with this issue.
On to the next project.....

Re: The 5 Stitches Garage 20 x 22 in FL

Its great to get those niggling areas in the shed cleaned up Gerard, well done..

Thanks 1/2 cup. That area really needed some attention. I'm slowly going some areas trying to get this place all cleaned up. I know that things with get shuffled around with the sink area remodel so just doing area I believe won't get affected. Only problem is like doing double the work but in long hopefully It will work out in my favor.

There sometimes is no easy way about it other than to double handle stuff.

I started on my under benches to install the new draw slides which have not had been cleaned properly in many years and I will be doing exactly the same due to lack of space.

All the best with it..

Nice door, I like it!

Thanks. All the extra ribs is to meet new hurricane codes. It was about $850 all installed with everything replaced except the opener. A insulated doors are more but not a big need for it in my climate.

Re: My "Shop"

I got this craftsman today. It's a 9 drawer with a 10/65 date stamp. It's still carried over the heritage logo series rounded corners.

It also had a different lock
9993a574829dcabb543d36c404d63aa8.jpg

It also had a plug system on the side which I don't know if original
398d61b8491168c90d7bf09b80eba67a.jpg

One also usually but turns out to be a good thing is the 4 top drawers have the normal clips but 5 bottom have a roller drawer system
718bcdd01d58ccccf5fecf4653deb721.jpg

I like that but then drawer doesn't fully open. I can't complain to much. It rust free and covered in almost 55 years of grime but I'll fix her up nice.

I have a idea of how I'm gonna redo things and for this gem in there. It really did effect some future plans I had in the works. I did only wanted one more 3 drawer but I found this one at good price and could help myself. LOL

WOW I am liking that Craftsman. I don't think I have ever seen that model. I like it a lot.
Did that side tray come original equipment, or was it an add on?
I am seeing about a half gallon of Simple Green, soak about an hour, and pressure washer for starters. That should rid it of the grime. All going well, that will be a vintage treasure you will want to showcase. I will see if I can find it in a 1965-66 Craftsman catalog for you.
There was really some great metal in those cabinets. Sir, you got yourself a real find there!!

Best Regards

Simple Green mighttake off the original paint, which is OK if that is in the plan. If not a gentler method may be in order.
It's similar generation to my box, which I love.

Re: My "Shop"

Thanks so much Herb, Its sure not the one I planned for the look of the bench and really I second guess myself after the fact on why I even got that one when all I wanted was a simple 3 drawer. After I got it figuired it out in my head what I would change to fit it and actually it isn't that much and I'm only losing 1 of the 3 future projects I had planned.

As far as the box goes. That tool tray is a bolt on item and shares the rounded corners of the older ones from the 1950's era. I still wonder about plugs on the side cause I never seen that but it has same trim as the drawers. I see many hours of decreasing and a pressure washer... I can't wait to see her all painted up and shiny.

Have a good one Gerard

Thanks, I surely plan to her up at match my others. Does yours have plugs on the side? And what year is yours for comparison on drawer sides. Top 4 are clip friction slides and bottom 5 are like older files cabinet slides or should say like kitchen drawer slides.

Have a good one Gerard

Cool toolbox. The round wrapped corners on it are pretty slick. It seems to have a number nice features for 1965.

Thanks Shopnut. I surprised on plugs on the side. Never seen that especially on older ones. I was joking with my friend today and said the wives aren't going to allow us to play together if we keep buying stuff like this. LOL.

WORK BENCH REVISION ?? OF ??
Phase 1 of ??

Well with my new toolbox I had to do some rearranging again of the garage. I had a idea how to fit things so started out with the new box. First order was a little clean up and a caster change.
eab85d1dcdc846444561c00fec7ee955.jpg

My idea was to put the 9 drawer bottom and 10 drawer chest as a stack, then 3 3 drawer bottoms under bench and a TOP SECRET project at end. The 7 drawer would go to sink wall and drill drill would move back to top of bench cause the DP cart worked but not as totally planned. The homemade cart and bottom roller goes bye bye. I also need a home for welder.

I started by removing the bench extension returning it back to it 8 ft length.
eadaf06b7383852b8b24a4f437871558.jpg

After that I moved the stack I spoke of in its place. I forgot to take pic of it cause I didn't like it. So plan B involved another caster change but I took 2inchers off the DP cart and put them on the 7 drawer bottom. I then took the 7 drawer, the 6 drawer chest and the 10 drawer chest and made a stack of it.
c66c6c05856a3ef884242005b3fdf383.jpg

I fell like ive done this before. YEP I did with my old craftsman stack.

Now to fit the DP. Now this took a long long time. My problem is that the DP is 35 in tall as it stands and only 28.5 from bench top to shelf. ??????? Ok this isn't gonna work but I made it happen. I took 4 inches out of the lift table gear and 4 inches out of the tube.
d0ee8406ea50ef0dc636c55679bb0038.jpg
c6ab3874c61633e8c3b100c78d1ac62e.jpg

After doing that it still won't fit so what do I do hmmmmmmmmmm I move the bench down. I had a double 2x4 on the edge so went down to one. This worked cause the boards started to sag or cup which I wanted. ????? Yep I wanted it to happen cause once it crowned I could flip it and use it to support center being its a floating bench still. Ok back to bench I took the boards out unscrewed them found the one with biggest crown flipped the crown up and screwed it back on and lowered the bench 2 1/4 inches. You can see the difference here.
26cd6b89c34e245faca027240065fe8f.jpg

After all was said and done I test fit the DP and this is how it looked.
11e6634babf46080b3f76f8eae5abee7.jpg

32584461daa07d1ed7989ef3fff94a02.jpg

It now the shortest it will ever be cause I can't cut no more out. It's was the biggest DP you could get before it became a floor model now it just as short as a bench top unit. I think it down over the years 10 inches I believe

At end of day the bench currently looks like this.

I got more planned for tomorrow and that special project well your just have to stay tuned......

Those boxes all look great together, like they were meant to be. A good result of all the re-org you had to do. That Craftsman logo on the 10 drawer makes a nice statement for that wall of boxes.

Wow, that Craftsman wall is unreal. And to think it was pieced together slowly from a variety of sources.

Good pick up on the tool box as well. Rearranging to fit goodies in seems to be fairly popular at the moment

Thanks, it's always tough to find the room to rearrange things and make it all work together. It's always helpful to be flexible than again I'm so stubborn that it's gonna work if I have a say. I have some more badges I have to do. I am missing 2 of them but I like the look of them.

Thanks Herb, when it comes to the garage I don't take NO for a answer and usually spend days working out the details to make it work. It's not unusual for me to take a weekend to rip apart the garage for the smallest gain. The days are fewer and after away but I'll still do it.

Gerard

OK I am going to show what a bonehead I am. I have been meaning to ask you this for a while. I have noticed you have a few tool boxes, that where you have them, you surely can't raise the lids on them? So here is my boneheaded question: Have you simply disconnected the lid lock and the drawers slide in and out freely? Do you just not use the top section of the boxes? Looks like you would lose quite a bit of storage by not using the part under the lid.
I, too, have thought of stacking some similar boxes into a stack, but thought I might have to remove the lids to make it work. Of course I do realize you can disengage the lid locks to the drawers.
I told you it was bonehead question, but I need to see what you have done.

Best Regards
Herb

It's not a stupid question... I open the lid and pull drawers out then close lid and push drawers in but they don't lock. The top lid is where locking bar raises and lowers so if wanted drawers locked you would have to lift lid fully push drawers in fully and close lid. I do lose storage of the top compartment especially in the stack. I think squeezing that much toolbox In that spot has more pros than cons. If I chosen to use 10 drawers top compartment I would lose the middle chest there. Now if I had the intermediate from that era I would still not be able to use the top compartment fully either or be able to lock the drawers. I thought about cutting or removing the lid altogether but it's not easy. I've tried and I only did it on my old craftsman's but I wouldn't do it to theses.

Now my machinist boxes, I do store stuff in top compartment but it's stuff I don't use often and those are easier to pull off shelf and access. I could roll out the stack if I wanted to access the top and I do plan to store stuff behind that stack like I did before only issue is I have to be careful cause the top chest isn't bolted down and either is the middle chest.

Sometimes you can find top chest real easy but intermediates ( such as the silver/ red intermediate) are rare. I find back in the day there wasn't many intermediates but they where a big top chest and a bottom roller as in many vintage sets. I don't think I do anything new by stacking them and sure others have done the same. There's always gonna be a pro and con. Take my bench. If I put chest on top I lose work surface but I can use all areas of the box. Now what it I mount it to the wall? Well I lose the top area but I gain work surface. Now the fix for both issues would be have less stuff. This is GJ, this is the 5 Stitches Garage, and the owner has a vintage Craftsman tool box addiction problem.... I do have a reputation to uphold. LMFAO

HF BENCH update.

Today I worked on HF bench area. I finally moved cabinet. I went with a suggestion from Rmarklow2 and did a 2x4 from ceiling to floor.
e5ac069c1dcf6328389980236f631864.jpg

After then I had to remount my stuff on the wall plus it was time to toss some stuff.
cc7052018a443b38e420bc9648a0b167.jpg

Now the cabinet it equal to work surface which is very important and will show why in another post soon.
66560d688cd23386141b5e171d82934a.jpg

I also added a piece of hardboard to the bench top.
221ad362abbd3c2077be4b8a7a90a508.jpg

This was also a good time to hang some stuff up all in one spot.
df21e17b3be12e643f37e02711d5ee7f.jpg

I havnt decided just yet to cut the shelf in which the machinists boxes are on. I also need some new lighting for this bench and this area needs to be repainted which will come. This is coming close to my idea for this area being a clean bench/ desk area. I've tried to use it just for a desk and clean projects but when I was working on the Craftsman bench stuff over flowed to this bench. Now I got all the boxes on this wall organized and set hopefully this area will stay clean.

Craftsman bench additions.

I can't tell how much I'm loving my new craftsman box. I find that it's the perfect height for a mobile work cart and been using it as such. I found a home for it until and this reason the cabinet is so high.

The Craftsman bench additions are a hardboard top.

And probably the beefiest 6 in shelf on the GJ.

I decided on 2 vises on the bench and spacing is I choose so handle falls between the boxes so vise the drawers won't interfere drawer opening.

The any drill press has a issue with long pieces and my is here's my solution

Also another reason I really like having 2 similar vises on my bench.

MORE HF BENCH UPDATES.

I finally decided about the shelf above the bench. I decided to cut off 6 in off of it and lower it few inches too. While doing that I tried a idea out.

Where's the rest of it? LOL. At that price it wouldn't be a bad to turn into a mobile platform for something.

And that is why I'm glad it's not near me because I've been thinking the same thing. It's like rescuing some orphan. I have no idea what to make out of it but for $15 if it was near me I'd probably have bought the darn thing and then I'd have yet another future project sitting around my place.:dunno:

Maybe someone creative will get it and turn it back to something useful.

It looks like a 5 drawer with garage door. I got tons of ideas for reuse from mobile book shelves, welding cart, storage rack for bench grinders and vises or just a mobile workbench. Herb, I think you should get it and make something out of it. LOL
