EPS foam cl score

found some used eps foam sheets locally that is 4" thick. i'm going to use them on the walls. with the r30 in the ceiling, it should keep the chill out.

One question, is the building an existing one? Do you still need to have it inspected? The reason I am asking is I think if the foam doesn't have certain specs printed on it the CEO or inspector can fail it because it doesn't meet certain requirements.

I am totally playing devil's advocate, I would use it in a heartbeat myself. I just thought I remember reading a thread or article about this subject before.

wow! yeah, you did well. The 4" is about R-value 12 if i remember correctly.

Ofc we don't know what type/density it is though.

i think the lowest density eps is r3.75/in. that would put it in the r15 range. of course, we know how ambiguous the r rating system is. r15 foam would probably be better than higher r rating batts because of less thermal breaks.

LOL, that's a lot of sheets! I bought 30 of the 2" sheets last year and it was almost 500 bucks.

When I installed my eps in my stud and truss cavities, I made a hot-wire knife for cutting the styrofoam. Didn't have the mess of all the "balls" blowing around and clinging to everything. Check YouTube for videos of the hot-wire cutters.

I cut my foam on the 4' side because by the time you got a 9' piece of wire and heat it it will sag ....stretch with the heat. I suppose you could rig it with a spring tensioner but.... I did mine with a with a 50" or so piece of wire. Was a little PITA because I was trying to get a tight fit between te studs and all the studs were not identical. They could....were....off maybe 1/8" or so and I wanted stuff it in tight. It took a while but it was all free insulation. I got 225- 4x8'- 2 1/2" sheets.....free. I love free!

Instead of trying to get a tight enough fit, you use a little spray to hold on the boards.

Awesome score. It does two things. One you got a great deal and two you recycle keeping all that foam out of the landfill.
I too scored some foam. I paid for 2 pickup/trailer loads and I was driving home with it when a guy flagged me down. Offered up more for free. He said he has to paid $300 for a dumpster or I could have it. Landed a load about half your size for $600 total.
Putting 6" in the ceiling and 3.5" in the walls.

That is why I was able to get mine for free. A local insulating company installing a complete new roof on a one story high school. Took the roof down to the metal and installing all new foam sheeting. They had to pay for the dumping fees and were begging folks to take it away. Not a problem!
