Picked up a large Swedish vice today made by Sevo, it's going to need a little bit of cleaning.

I also have a little Sevo vice, which I think may be the smallest they did.

The plates can be rotated however you like to find the most suitable way to clamp awkward shapes, then they can be locked in position. The locking handles are missing so I'll make a couple up, for now a large screwdriver is doing the job.

Found this advert for them, strangely the advert shows them with 4 plates in each pile and both mine have only 3. Also the advert mentions only 2 sizes available, neither of which are the size I own.

Also found this picture on the web that shows what the missing handles should look like.

CW: those vises are awesome. now I've added a couple others to my list.

ALL: anybody have one of these? it's a watchmaker's vise (not mine yet) and i'm guessing it will fit in one hand.

DrivesItFar I only discovered the Sevo vices recently, they are very well made. I've no idea what date range they were made during and there doesn't seem to be much info available on them. But you are right, they're awesome :) I Need to find one of an in between size now.

I like the watchmakers vice, I must add something similar to my collection .... it should be a bit easier to sneak past the wife ;)

Somebody jump on this, 326 Athol For Sale in Charlotte, NC. Looks like it has the orig pipe jaws and swivel.

The jaws for a #326 is 6" wide and the weight is around 225 lbs.

Pretty rare to find a Athol this size and this old that is complete.

I'm not sure I would buy a vise from a guy who paints his toenails. :wtf: :)

A C/L seller has this vise available - claims it's a 7" Prentiss and asks $375.00. What's it worth to the "big boy" collectors here?

That's a pretty big one. The 97 was in the Bulldog line and was about 235 lbs. It looks like one of the feet is broken off, though. If I was selling I'd probably be asking at least that much. If I was buying then maybe $200 tops.

That's a cool find, drivesit Its a poising vise for checking the poise of a balance wheel. Most good quality pocket watches have synthetic ruby "jewels" which are just super hard pivot sockets for balance shafts. If a gear is out of alignment, it won't run right. The parallel surfaces of the jaws are precision ground and should have a pair of small holes to support the shaft. Spin the wheel and see where it's out of alignment. The whole concept is similar to truing a bike wheel

BC: sounds like i should buy it and trade you for one of your museum pieces since i don't own a watch. seriously thanks for sharing your knowledge.

ALL: i found this gem doing a little CL searching tonight and wondered if anybody owns one or knows much about it. it's a Blacksmith vise with a foot pedal.

Drivesitfar: Thanks for the quick response, unable to post side shots the vise is in storage. I was offered $200 for it from someone local in MI, I just don't know if I ready to let it go.

Here is a couple I had pic's of, the green one not a foot operated one has 10 inch jaws. The grey one has 6" jaws. You would think the foot operated ones would snap in place like a vise grip or it would be hard to use unless you are doing sheet metal work.

That looks like a fresh break, was it damaged by a courier?

Yes. UPS delivered it. The broken piece wasn't in the box. Looks like a combination of poor handling and bad packaging. The box had holes in it and there were pieces of broken Styrofoam in the box. Makes me sick, the vise was dirty but other than the break it was perfect.

CC: i hope you took plenty of pictures of the damaged box. getting rebates from anybody without good documentation is pretty tough.

sorry for your loss. that's why i bolt vises to pallets or if i ship in a cardboard box the vise is bolted to a piece of 3/4 inch plywood. knock on wood not an issue for me yet. Styrofoam and cardboard just wont save an mounting ear if dropped.

KM: do you happen to have that giant vise picture that looks like the green one only twice as big? maybe Wrenchguy posted it, but i think it was close to the same weight as the 695 pound Pittsburgh we talk about now and then.

VA: interesting vise on Ebay for $200, but not quite as **** as the green one i posted.

Jeremy: i can't buy them all, but added that one to my list if i find it closer than NY. hopefully a barn will have one sitting rusty and dusty in a corner waiting for me to save it.

CW: you are a bad influence, but i do like those vises you seem to find. keep up the great work and beware that there really is a Visaholics club here if you need help. Joe asked us for help to stop buying vises about 3 months ago and we helped him so much i think if i totaled it up he has bought maybe 60 vises since so he's less than a vise a day and doing great.

Joe: is that close??

If it's via eBay then I believe you need to raise a dispute with the seller as they then need to deal with the courier as they had the contract with the courier. At least that's how it would work this side of the pond.

The one you posted seems more useful than most since it has the locking mechanism. I've seen the similar type (like VA posted) that were usually called bolt headers. Here's a link to a page that shows a few types along with some of the dies that the bolt headers would use.

Ive got plenty of pics but if its as tough as you say it is Im considering just keeping it and fixing it. Ive got a piece of cast iron the right size that I can cut and shape then weld it on.

It's not that difficult at all.

Let the seller know it was damaged in transit NOW. Give them a couple of days to make good on it; If they balk, THEN raise a dispute. You have I think 30 days to raise the dispute. Ebay/Paypal will make it right no mater what the seller thinks, says or does to try to not make it right...

Options may include: return item, partial refund, or anything else you and the seller agree on.

Bottom line; you did not receive what you ordered, and it is on the seller to make good. (look up mail order laws sometime...)

I was trying to tempt my brother with that one and bring him into the fold. So far he isn't biting though. Still posted as of 3:30pm, did you call about it?

I walked away from it in my mind then decided an hour later that I'd try to buy it. I looked about noon and it was no longer posted. I just looked again and I do not see it. If it was available I'd buy it. Then think about whether or not I need it lol

Scooter: it looks like a good Reed and i'm guessing with 7 inch wide jaws it's a 107 and should weigh in the 130-150 pound range. he doesn't show the one side that would have the model # so 107 is a good guess.

only thing i noticed is that the handle doesn't look original. that said you might pull the dynamic all the way out and turn it over and see what the screw looks like. also check the vise nut for slop and any cracks. since it isn't a light vise taking it home in 2 pieces might be a bit easier and just know that when you try to put a big vise back together say a prayer first because not always easy.

good luck
