I just picked up a PAR-X UR70 (3/8 drive) ratchet yesterday. This is the first PAR-X ratchet I have handled, and I like it. It is pretty coarse, but it is cool nonetheless.

I opened it up and the gear and pawl looked fine. The cover plate appears to have a crack but I don't think it will affect anything, so I'm leaving it alone.

I was thinking about picking up a spare gear and pawl. Does anyone know what parts will fit? (search function wasn't finding anything on this site)

Cool deal. Yes, it is on the coarse side. Oddly enough I just got around to ordering the plate screws. 70 cents total.

Well, for the record the UR70A plate screw does not fit the PAR-X UR70. I'm not having much luck with this one.

Oh, and I think I figured out some of Snap-On's costs. They sent me a single screw (I wrongly thought I was buying a set) in a well padded 7" x 7" x 7" box via UPS GROUND (1 lb rate). I appreciate proper shipping and all but that's crazy and far from cost effective.

SocketDeviler, this just might be a case where actually calling Snap on on the phone; would pay off! I had a really nice lady on the phone when I called Snap on and really tried hard to get some parts I needed for my tool box and even called their "tech line" for help... she wasn't able to help me (the parts were obsolete) but she did her best! The other option is to go to a dealer and get a kit; I had some really old ratchets and after trying a couple of kits; my dealer found one that worked! Give Snap on a call or meet up with our local dealer! Good luck!

Alrighty guys, I have a UR720 ratchet that followed me home. It won't reverse, the lever is sruck, because the cover plate is wrong. The SO site shows a cover plate for a UR720A...anyone care to tell me if it interchanges? The cover plate I have now doesn't fit right and puts tension on the reverse lever where it comes through the hole in the plate.

Well, I took billymade's advice and called Snap-On. To my surprise they told me to send the ratchet in for repair or replacement, most likely replacement since it was "so old." I was surprised by this and even said "I didn't think you would do that for a Par-X" and the girl replied that she was surprised to but was given the OK.

They even sent me a UPS label to ship it so I did. Well, today I got my Par-X back in the same condition it was sent with a note stating that it did not qualify for repair or replacement since it was not labeled Snap-On or Blue-Point.

So I called again and asked why they had me go through the trouble of printing a label, packing it up and dropping it off if they had no intention of doing anything about the ratchet. I clearly stated what it was from the start. The girl I spoke with was nice and put me on hold for a long time. Eventually she offered to send me a repair kit for free. No explanation for the wasted transaction was offered. I accepted but I have no idea if the kit will work as there seems to be much confusion there about this "third party brand."

Just thought I'd give a heads up to those that are or might soon be in my situation.

Thats strange; sounds like whoever received the ratchet, had no clue about the PAR-X/Snap-on history or connection! I was wondering what would happen if I sent PAR-X in to Snap-On... too bad they sent it back! Go figure! :( I wonder if the issue needs to be sent up a level to some sort of customer relations person; to get a more clear statement on what the current policy is on the PAR-X warranty?

According to the people I dealt with there is no warranty. Well, almost none, I am getting the repair kit (which is hopefully for this model) but only after calling back. It's clear that they don't deal with this issue much. So yes, a firm statement on the matter would be nice.

That is scary when the GJ folks know more about Snap-on's product line than they do!

Yeh, that was weird. Like I said, after an extended period of being on hold while she discussed the matter with someone she came back and referred to it as a "third party brand."

I felt it fitting to put this chapter to rest. I received the repair kit but as I suspected it was not for this ratchet. It was worth a shot. Thanks for all the advice.

Again, I would try getting in contact with a snapon dealer; my dealer figured out which kit worked and he may be able to do this for you too! Worth a try!

If I see one around I will but I'm in no hurry as I have spent more time on this than I intended. Thanks for the advice though.

I think williams is a recent acquisition. I know nothing about PAR-X, but it was definately not the bluepoint of yesteryear. Blue-point was a company started in the early 20's that worked alongside snap on, and appeared in the Motor Tool Specialty Co. catalogs, supporting the Snap-on line of tools, that Snap On themselves didn't make. Both companies worked out of the same office, but didnt merge until years later. But to sum it up, BP has been Snap-on's outsourced line since day one, however, in the past, it was sold as a cheaper line of tools, but rather a line of tools types not made by Snap on themselves.
