Good morning everyone! Well, unless your time zone isn't morning right now. But either way, hello!

My fiance and I bought our first house in November and I finally have my own garage. My parents have been very accommodating, but there are only so many engine swaps I can do before they start asking me to clean up the mess. I think I still have an engine at their place... In any case, here's the new place:

It's a 1.5 car bay with a rear door to the back yard. Dimensions are about 17x19 with a 10' ceiling. My plan is to start working on it once things warm up a bit - insulate the walls and ceiling, install outlets and lights, some cabinets, a slat wall on the right side, work bench, and finish the floor. I have a gas line already installed so I'll be adding an overhead heater for the winter months.

The work being done in the garage is mainly automotive, plus whatever else comes along. The car in the picture is my '92 Subaru SVX which has been an ongoing project since I bought it almost 8 years ago (my first car). I've replaced the entire drivetrain, converted it to a manual transmission, built a custom exhaust and done a handful of other things. Now that I finally have a place it can live in peace I want to start a real restoration on it and get into the body work.

Anywho, I'm glad to have finally joined up here and am looking forward to getting started on the garage build!

CP: nice handle and do you fly airplanes too or do you just fly low in your cars? it's great to have your own garage and a 1.5 is a lot better than a single. here's another member's garage in Ontario that just spent a lot of time (and money) on organizing his single car garage that you might get a few ideas from.

there are plenty of great threads and ideas on this forum as you might already know and best of luck getting your garage organized and set up.

welcome

Morning Crazy from Ohio! I guess we are pretty close in time zones. Looks like a great start. You'll love the 10' ceilings and the extra garage door in the back. Good luck!

Thanks for the welcomes. I spend a fair amount of time on assorted forums and the air of friendliness here is among the best of any I've seen.

Airplanes are one of my other expensive hobbies. I have a private license and ~80 hours flying time in assorted small planes. I also fly gliders and have about 120 hours in those, although I haven't done much gliding in a while. I dabble in RC aircraft too. I don't do as much flying as I would like ($120/hr is a tough pill to swallow when I'm adapting to my first mortgage), but I try to get in a plane as often as possible.

Doing an oil change on the 172 with the 150 and a pair of Global business jets in the background:

Thanks for that link, I've been looking for organization ideas with small garages. Most of the builds I've seen are much more substantial and allow for more storage. Being in a smaller space calls for creative solutions. Fortunately I have a 10x8 shed in the back yard, so the big and seasonal items can live in there. The freezer is going to go into the basement once I've moved a wall in the laundry room.

CP: nice picture of the plane. i can't even imagine how good of a mechanic you'd have to be to work on single engine planes and then fly them. i'm impressed with your abilities to do both.

i forgot to mention i also like the door out the back of your garage and is there room out behind your house to store a couple projects or maybe a spot to build another shop or garage?

lots of good reading to do on the site and if you have any questions just find the threads talking about the subject and ask or you can PM me and i'll help if i can.

again welcome

Actually an oil change on a small piston engine plane isn't significantly more work than the average car. Once the cowl's off it's the same routine - drain the pan, change the filter (which for a plane is secured with safety wire), refill the oil, run the engine and check for leaks... It's actually something any plane owner can do themselves. The more complicated tasks like engine work or flight controls require a certified mechanic, which I'm not. Maybe one day.

There's room in the back yard for some toys, but not another garage. If my property was maybe 15-20' longer I could put in a 25x25' shop but unfortunately that isn't the case. I am planning to put a portable garage behind that door so I can put an inactive project in a sheltered spot while I use the garage for other things.

Thanks for the offer! I've definitely got lots of reading to do. There's a lot to learn and a lot of really great ideas on this site that I can make use of before I put my garage together.

CP: you can post clean up or improvements to your garage here, start a thread or just do them on your own as you have time.

it sounds like you have a good plan so i'll get to my own organizing and wish you the best. ask questions if you have any about the forum here or enjoy reading the threads and ask questions there if you have any or if you have the answers i'm sure others would appreciate hearing yours.

good luck
