I am in the process of upgrading a Square D Homeline sub panel. Would like a source for good prices on breakers from an online vendor that you guys have used and trust.
Thanks....

WHY in the world would you want to buy HOM breakers online, especially for such a small project.

You're in NJ, I find it very hard to believe that you don't have an electrical supply house somewhere within reason. And I refuse to believe that you do not have a HD or Lowes within 200' of your house.

Look up the part number, Google that number and then click shopping.

I have done well on Amazon and eBay.

I haven't figured this out either and you see a lot of it. I drive by HD and Lowes at least 4 times a day. I would rather pick it up and have it in my hand :)

I dunno about your area but up here in NoVA I'd go to Dominion or Dulles before I'd buy electrical supplies from the Big Boxen...

With HD and Lowes buying breakers by the many 1,000's the single poles are cheaper there than the local supply house I deal with by .20 cents or so, the bigger double poles are cheaper at supply house. 14/2 & 12/2 is cheaper at HD and Lowes, but all other wire is cheaper at Supply house, same with some electrical panels, but make sure you are comparing apples to apples, the outdoor panel at HD or Lowes might have an aluminum bus compared to copper bus at supply house. I did buy a brand new box of 20 amp twin ITE breakers on ebay for $20.00 shipped to me (The ones without the metal clip that are $19.99 at HD) if you cant get by supply house during normal hours or HD/Lowes is not close, shop around, look on E-bay for new breakers.

Across the river here in Md, the supply houses are a lot more expensive for the same exact items. I have two supply houses walking distance from my shop but they are way too expensive.

Really? On every single item??

Around here big box stores are cheaper on high profile things. Panels (a bit), breakers, NM cable in 250' rolls. Aside form this they are more expensive on A LOT of things. Boxes and fittings in particular. And when you buy boxes by the hundred it adds up.

David,
Nobody chastising, just curious more than anything. I own a local business and don't understand why anyone would buy something like this online instead of running down to the local store.

As far as buying it online, why not get it from Home Depot's web site. I would hope they would be a trusted seller.

Bill,
If the local HD had all the breakers I needed, I'd be all set but they don't. I do try to buy locally for support of local businesses. Why they don't have a gfi 20amp 2 pole breaker in stock I don't know. I also need a few other older style breaker that are not carried by the closest HD, which by the way is 8.2 miles away, not 200'. I was trying to get everything from one source for convenience.
Oh, and by the way speedy, it's over 200' to the road from my house.

Speedy,
You are comparing apples to oranges. I think this thread is about a consumer buying a couple of items for himself, not a contractor buying "hundreds" at a time :)
Not really, I was making a point. Unless you are going in to buy only advertised items, you are likely paying more for it.

I have found the same thing. HD does not have all the parts one might need for a job. They don't carry every wall plate either. They have most and in 4-5 colors, but when you need that one, it may not be there.

Same for breakers.

Wow, sorry to bother you guys. Instead of chastising, you could have just ignored the request.

I agree with you. Some of these guys are not here to help, unfortunately. Good luck with your project.

. . . just curious more than anything. I own a local business and don't understand why anyone would buy something like this online instead of running down to the local store.

There are plenty of reasons to buy online. Convenience and price are two. Being able to find a specific product that is not available locally is another. While my current situation is different, there was a time in my life where I had very little time for projects. Parts were ordered online late at night to be delivered to my door because I couldn't even afford the time to make a trip to a local store. I have friends who live in small towns where their only choice is a long trip or ordering online.

Wow. Thin skinned much?

I was making an exaggerated sarcastic point about you living in NJ and the average proximity to a big box store, who btw can order order anything you want, same as any electrical supply house.
I had hoped that was obvious.

Obviously. In such cases Google is your friend, as well as Amazon, NewEgg, TigerDirect, and all the other online retailers with positive reviews.

To directly answer David's question, so as not to ruffle any feathers, I don't know of any online retailers for electrical supplies other than the obvious choices.
I'll add that I do go to Amazon for a bit when my local supply houses cannot get stuff in time or if they are much higher on certain items. It really is amazing what they carry. In these cases Prime is your best friend.

Not saying you are getting the best deal but it is a source.
Understand where you are coming from and of course it is always nice to be able to go pick up stuff and have it in hand but then again nothing wrong having a stuff delivered directly too you. Works either way for me! Good luck!!

That looks like a great resource PatStroud. I would much rather shop online for many things, I can do it in the evening without having to go out of my way, find what I want and have it sitting on my front porch in a couple of days. I don't have to waste time waiting in line on the week days and I refuse to waste time shopping on the weekends.

I have had good luck with Amazon for breakers, not always the cheapest but for sure the most convenient.
