Nice job there Kevin. That looks superb and I can only imagine how slick that one must operate. I've used Fresca cans in my photos before too.

No, working with photos only, the Rev. Scott made me 2 custom handles for the Emmert that matched perfectly the original handles. Beauriful work.

Joe: the more you show that Emmert and since it's your Avitar did you decide to keep it? Happy birthday from another Aquarian. Are you old enough where you might have seen the Beatles live on the Ed Sullivan show on a Black and White small TV like I did?

**: i seem to recall you were kussing at us a month or so ago about your vice for vises. are you just getting pickier now or did you decide why fight it and just buy a few? also that swivel jaw picture doesn't blow up on my laptop, but if it checks out in person and it is a swivel jaw Holland's I'm jealous because I've yet to find one.

VA: can you quit teasing the boys with the 4C ad that you want to buy? I wonder what his reserve amount is? $1500 or ?? I better get mine mounted and start marking it up so you guys don't talk me into selling mine. good luck.

(Spring stack isn't from that motorhome, just a stack I did last week, off topic but had to do it massive motor in that Packard)

I used to work in a car museum. Packards, Dusenberg, Cord. They had a 1937 Pierce Arrow limo the owners let me borrow for my best friends wedding. I was the best man and found out the windshield wipers didn't work on the way to taking them to the honeymoon hotel, the grooms sister was riding in the front passenger seat and had to lean out and work them by hand every so often!

Grab that bad boy if the price is right and the screw is good. You'll love it. I have one just like it except mine is a 6" ... a Columbian 605 swivel. Here's what your will look like all spiffed up. Cheers, Bill

Drivesit, no the Emmert will be moved along. It sits on my Kitchen counter (much to my wife's dismay) because I do like it but i just no use for it. If I put it in the garage it will rust up immediately. I just keep procrastinating on it.

As to my age, I am 56. Born in '59. Fun fact, NJMarty and I share a birthday!

Dan,

Very nice first vise. I believe that is a swivel base model without the swivel. The Reed experts here will know more and will let you know of that part is still available. I think it is. If so, you can turn it into a Swivelin' B@$tard. :D

A Hollands swivel jaw. Don't let that one get away!

Pretty sure the 104 is fixed base. There is a third hole hidden by the slide. ( I have two; neither has a swivel base...)

The price is right...

As to type...

????

Weight---102lbs???

If that's it's actual weight, I'd be very surprised...102lbs would make it the lightest 7" Machinist Vise I've ever heard of...especially with a slide that long...That's 5 pounds LESS than a 5" Craftsman 5198, and right around what my Starrett 925 would weigh if it was a "Swivelin' B@#tard"...

Guess--- Columbian made for someone else???

I'm sure one of the Galactic Gurus of vise minutiae will respond with the correct facts...

As I said---The price is right...Offer him $175.00 and see if he bites...I'll bet he won't come down much, if at all...

I have no means or intentions of purchasing. It over 1K miles away, just a curiosity/education question.

Hey, we've got guys on here, that would drive that far for a 7 or 8 incher...

I remember somebody driving over 3,000 miles round trip for an 8" Restored Parker---I think it was a Parker...

I'm more curious about the light weight...

I would expect a 7" Machinist Vise to weigh, at the minimum, 150 pounds...with several brands at 200+...

Outlaw: funny you mention Standard brand vise because there was a small Standard vise for sale and might still be in San Mateo a couple months ago. Pretty sure Standard vises were made by Morgan.

Standard vises did have a nice name cast into the vises I've seen so wondering why this one isn't. also 100 pounds would be pretty light for a 7 incher.

McB: i think Dan's Reed is newer. his rounded removable dynamic on it's underside is a mystery though.

Dan: nice looking reed and it's a stout vise to do most any job even with rounded jaws.

Here is what threw me. I thought the stationaries had square bottoms.

The last models (like he has with the replaceable jaws & round base) came as a 104-N (stationary) or 104-S (swivel).... You have to look real careful to see what they stamped on that square next to the 104. I have a 104-N and found a swivel base on eBay that fit perfect for it.

My guess is the change was to save on manufacturing costs since it would be one casting model instead of two.

The square stationary are slightly older models. Before that they were 3-foot stationary (like older Parkers).

Some one wanted to see the inside of an Athol ratchet hub.
Finally managed to get mine apart. A screwdriver bit chucked into a bit brace worked. I leaned in line to keep it from caming out. Thus it worked where a screwdriver with hex bolster and a wrench failed.

Even if it does have a weld/repair, wasting time asking questions about spending $20 for parts that are worth more is insane. That vise could be used to get another one up and running.

420 lb vise

Here's another unicorn for the big vise lovers. Apparently Stephens made a 9 1/2 inch jaw vise. The stationary version was 380 lbs and the swivel was 420 lbs:scared:. Look at the prices: $140 and $150. The same catalog this ad came from shows the 8 1/8" Parker at $50. At triple the price of a Parker I have to wonder if they ever sold one.

I haven't got it yet, he's a few hours north and we've seen 10" of snow today. Going to meet up this week and figure out a price I guess.

Yes, Drivesitfar. I hate my vice for vises, but I have an unused line of credit to solve problems like this.

Image of the rounded jaws, At first I thought one side was chipped off until I rotated vise around.

Hope I don't have to replace anytime soon, pins look secured quite well!

Thanks for everyone's input and Catalog info, glad I didn't go buy a new Vise!

My guess is that the jaw was clearanced for a reason. In my opinion, it's not a big deal and easily fixed with new jaws or by welding up the existing ones. Unless it is causing you a problem, I would leave them as is since it makes your vise unique.

Well, the old inflation calculator only goes back 100 years, but $150 in 1913 was worth $3,586.91 in 2014. Wow!
