I bought an Ingersoll Rand 231TL-2 Impact wrench at a flea market for 15 bucks. The Throttle valve was torn causing it to run all the time. I have ordered a kit for it, however, In reading about it the TL-2 appears to be a Torque Limited version of the 231. What application is that for? I Love my old 231A impact wrench but the 231TL-2 has the long anvil. Thoughts?

Use it for tires, then finish with a torque wrench?

That is what I figured. I do that now by turning down the air valve setting on the 231A. I would like to find a manual for the 231TL-2 but so far I can only find the parts diagram and parts index.

I was toying with the idea of getting an extended anvil for my 231. I only use it for tires and an extended anvil would be great with flip sockets.

If you do, be sure and get the right one. I was going to use the 231TL-2 anvil in the 231A and they were different. Even the hammer case was slightly different. There are so many versions of the 231.

i know for a fact costco uses custom build IR torque limited guns they zap on each lug nut with the gun then followed by hand torqued by hand twice.

the junk part of the limited torque part is these guns break often and fast. we used to go through guns monthly

I got the rebuild kit for this Impact and installed it. I really like it. The extended anvil is very handy and it is nice to use the impact to tighten lugs without worrying about over torqueing. I always hand torque anyway. I like using shallow sockets with this gun rather than deeps with the short anvil impact wrench that I was using.
