I'm looking to buy a hub puller to pull the drums off my 63 plymouth. They have the tapered axles. The best deal I could find a puller by OTC at O'Reilly's for $140.99. Noticed on their website that you get get $15 off $75 or more spent. Anyone else have any suggestions?

amazon, ebay, harbor freight.... or if you can survive with a rental, borrow one from an auto parts chain.. i bought a 9 way puller (i think its 9, or 11) OTC from amazon for like $80 shipped.. slide hammer kit with a hub puller also.. just the hub puller from OTC is under $40 on amazon, but im not sure if thats what you'd need to get drums off..

Naw, it's a completely different animal he's looking for. Has 3 arms that bolt to the wheel studs, with a special "wrench" that you whack with a BFH. Pretty much obsolete, although I've used mine to push CV axles out of hubs. Might try posting a WTB on here and on CL, might get lucky.

ProTo,,, Mine were bought new 45 years ago..... still USA made,,, about the only thing that has changed is the addition of the letter "J" to the part number on that puller.. My complaints are zero.... Check their website protoindustrial.com

I'm looking to buy a hub puller to pull the drums off my 63 plymouth.

Then you need a drum puller. Like this OTC 6980 for about $100 shipped online. Works great and you don't have to beat the hell out of the drums.

No, he needs the type of puller he shows in the post right above yours. You young whippersnappers probably never saw a drum mounted on a tapered axle shaft.

OP, why no Ebay? Seems a shame to pass up a USA made puller for less than the imports you're looking at.

Rear drums on a Ford Focus.

Is OP certain he needs a puller? Usually you can get them off by removing the retaining nut and taping the spindle with a brass hammer while you pull on the drum with your off hand. They shouldn't be that hard to get off. Also, adjust the brakes way down before trying.

Another way to get a stuck drum offn a tapered axle is to remove the cotter pin, loosen the nut off about a 1/2 turn, put the cotter pin back in and drive around the block making sure you turn to the left if trying to loosen the RH drum and turn right if trying to loosen the LH drum. If the drums aren't super tight they should come loose fairly easy, otherwise may take more driving to get them loose.

I remember my older brother one time drove a '39 Ford around for a month before the drum came loose. Hope your's aren't that tight.

I wish the car was drivable. Trans went out when I bought it and it had been sitting in a barn atleast 15 years or so before I bought it. Started pulling the engine and trans.

Glad I came across this thread...I've been looking for one of these drum removers as well. Looks like the OTC 7394, Cal-Van 94800, or one of the ones list on Ebay will be the way to go. Thanks for the ideas.

The reason being is that on my '41 Packard (and many other Pre-War vehicles), the nut holding the rear drums to the tapered axle is torqued about 225-250 ft/lbs. If you pull it using one of the drum removers that hooks onto the outer edge of the drum you stand a good chance of deforming the drum.

Thanks,
Chad
