I could have used a magnetic socket many times but an open end wrench? It takes more of a turn for threads to catch than is practical with a wrench. If this is just for picking things up, that's what they make the magnetic sticks for.

Magnetism is usually a bane with most tools, as every bit of metallic **** sticks to them. Easy enough to magnetise most things by wiping it with a magnet, if the urge takes you.

Couldn't you just wrap it with a coil of copper wire and pass a current through it to magnetize it? I know it works on screwdrivers. If you then hook up the current in reverse it will de-magnetize them.

This is neat --

And apparently, even though it's _seriously_ common sense,
none of the manufacturers have decided to put forth the effort
to do this before...

Damnit! It's the simple ideas nobody ever thought of that kick off so well and make you say "why didn't I think of that?!"
Not a big fan of adjustable wrenches, but this needs applied to open end box end wrenches........and sockets! Sockets pose a unique problem of how to get the nut out. Maybe start the nut with one or two threads to remove socket and finish removing nut by hand?
Whatever.......I can think of no less than a hundred times I could have used one of those.

I'm trying to understand how this would be patentable since magnetic screwdrivers and nutdrivers already exist.

I've never used a wrench to start a bolt before. Dont know if I would use a Magnetic one.

Can you imagine the *********** in your tool box wrench drawer with a set of magnetized combo wrenches. Maybe late night tv or the next Craftsman gimmick wrench but not for me thanks...

And to think I've been using a piece of paper towel wedged between the nut and the wrench to hold nuts and bolts in wrenches when I really needed a new tool.

So is he selling Tekton and MAC wrenches with provisions he added or is he forging his own wrenches????

His one claim recites applying a ferrofluid to the wrench end, or using a magnetic insert.

A ferrofluid? Is he just picking words that sound sophisticated?

Ferrofluids are not liquid magnets. They don't retain a magnetic field. They just react to an applied magnetic field.

Reversing the current is not how to de-magnetize a tool. You'll just get a different magnetization.

The way to demagnetize something is to apply a strong alternating current to the coil and gradually weaken it. Or slowly pull the object away.

...and a rubber handle! Awfully restrictive one-claim patent. Proof that if one is determined, one can get a patent on almost anything. Whether that patent is worth anything is a different matter...

United States Patent 8,863,622
Kingsberry October 21, 2014
Magnetic wrench systems

Abstract
Magnetic Wrench can provide people with a convenient way to install and remove nuts and bolts with a wrench without the nut or bolt slipping out of the wrench and falling onto the floor. This unique product can comprise a wrench with built-in, internal magnets on the openings on both ends. The magnets comprise three small washers placed around the wrench's openings, or a magnetic strip that can follow the curve of the opening. This concept can be applied to both metric and standard wrenches, as well as various shapes and sizes of wrenches. The exact specifications, materials used, and method of use of Magnetic Wrench may vary upon manufacturing.
...
What is claimed is new and desired to be protected by Letters Patent is set forth in the appended claims:

1. A magnetic wrench system comprising: a magnetic wrench including; a handle member having; a proximate end; and a distal end; a first head having an inner surface; a second head having an inside surface; at least one first magnetic insert member; and at least one second magnetic insert member; wherein said handle member is defined in length by said proximate end and said distal end; wherein said first head is located on said handle member; wherein said second head is located on said handle member; wherein said handle member provides a lever whereby a fastener is able to be turned by said first head, said first head able to suitably grip said fastener for rotation about an axis; wherein said handle member, said first head, and said second head are treated with ferrofluid; wherein said handle member further comprises a rubber sleeve; wherein said handle member is alternately able to turn said fastener using said second head, said second head able to suitably grip said fastener for rotation; wherein said first magnetic insert member is affixed into said inner surface of said first head; wherein said second magnetic insert member is affixed into said inside surface of said second head; wherein said first magnetic insert member and said second magnetic insert member comprises rare earth magnets; wherein said rare earth magnets comprise a magnetic field in excess of about 1.4 teslas; and wherein said first magnetic insert member and said second surface insert member provide magnetic attraction between said fastener and said magnetic wrench such that said magnetic wrench is able to better hold and grip said fastener when said fastener is being manipulated during rotational torquing.

As I said, it's weak. There are several ways to design around this claim.

It looks like the patentee threw any and all limitations he could find to get his one claim allowed. I hope he thinks he got his money's worth.

My bet is she never makes the first maintenance fee.

He better not let Sears know about it.

Why did he need a "good enough diploma" if he already graduated high school in the 80's?

look on Snap on site for item YA207. Years ago I thought about getting one to try out but always forgot to buy one. I'm sorry but I don't now how to post picture of it from Snap on site. Might be nice to have as you can take on and off wrench as needed for special job.
