J.T. Slocomb Co. Micrometers

Just picked up these J.T. Slocomb Co. Micrometers for $2.50 each. These say made in Glastonbury, CT . Does anyone have info on how to calibrate them or if it's even possible? If I can, I want to clean them up, remove the engravings prom the previous owner, and polish them up.

The link is for how to adjust Starret brand mics. Slocombs have a different barrel arrangement . You need to back out the spindle almost all the way and use a special little wrench to turn the adjusting nut.

it talks about others too.

i am pretty sure the nut only tightens the threads/takes up back lash,
you still have to turn the barrel to affect zero.

I have a couple of older Starett , you back out the barrel and adjust the nut to calibrate
here is a close up of the 5" mic backed out so you can see the adjuster

The nut is in 2 parts held together by spring tension. Turning them while they are together adjusts zero. Separating the halves, rotating one half and then reassembling adjusts tension.
A complicated arrangement but it's one thing that made those mics so long wearing.

the pic shows a disassembled j.t.slocomb from R.I.

it shows from the right , thimble , nut , spring , sleeve w/threaded
inner sleeve. the inner sleeve [pointer] will need turning to affect zero.

others [starrett etc.] have an external sleeve to turn.

Yup. That's what's happening .
What you call the sleeve I call the barrel and what you call the inner sleeve I call half of the nut.

On the 2 to 3 incher, did someone cut off a peice of the frame on the fixed anvil end? If so, they need to be kicked in the nuts for that. Hard.

Yea. Must have needed to fit it somewhere but looks it was cut fairly recently.
