Wierd Speed control on Crafstman 100 Drill Press

I picked this up at an estate sale. Anyone ever seen this type of speed control?

Rube Goldberg had nothing on that! My Buffalo 14 DP came with a ho-made slow speed setup something like that.

Couple pics of when I first got it, and one pic of how it looks now with a 1 HP motor and VFD in place of the ho-made speed reducer.

Yes, that style was a popular home project back in the 40's-60's in the typical Handyman, Popular Mechanics and the like magazines. In the back and on the side there were a few companies that advertised those for the folks that didn't want to build their own. Somewhere I have a catalog scan of that one.
