I don't have a beautiful restoration here but this is going to be my main vise for auto repairs in my shop. I wanted to leave the patina as I don't think its bad. I took everything in a parts washer and cleaned it. Someone went ape with white lithium grease on it. Main screw is fully lubed with moly 60 paste. Took a die grinder to the jaw inserts and anvil to shine them up. The handle I ran on a bench grinder wire wheel. On the slide I used a scotchbrite pad by hand. It's a 924.

Very nice, I really like the lines on those. Are you going to try and find the swivel base?

I was over at someone's house and they had a couple of vises. Anyone know anything about them? Other than the last pic is a blacksmith vice.

First one is a old Parker as Exeter said.

I wouldn't put much money out for the blacksmith vise. It is missing the spring, clamp and mount. If you need one and can get it cheap OK, but otherwise pass.

I don't know what my chances of ever finding one would be without buying a whole vise. Did every vise come with a swivel? I see plenty out there without one (ebay etc).

O don't think so, hence their option for the 3rd bolt on the back that is not used when on the swivel base. Ask Balane, that is a borderline philosophical question. :lol_hitti

Looking at more pics of them with the swivel bases, I would lean toward it was an optional piece that could be purchased. I was happy with it as a stationary vise.

A 92X doesn't have a base...

And, is therefore, NOT a "Swivlin' B@#TARD"...

All of them have a "beveled" hole on the right side for the Base Clamp Screw, when a base is used...

If the model number ends in a "C"---the vise should have a base, and is supposed to be one of those "Swivlin' B@#TARDS"...

All of the Starrett 92X series are stout, classic American made clampers...

It's only a vice at the end of the day Joe. Irked as you might be, it's just one of those things. If you saw it listed, someone else obviously must have too. It happens, and I'm sure we've all been on the receiving end of similar at some point.

So then VA, are you going to have a photo of it mounted on your bench as your avatar until he agrees to relinquish the Fisher?

Speaking of odd paint choices, here is a Record No4 I got
View media item 48486This had everything thing going against it on Ebay, new seller, badly listed, dire photos, gold rattle can blow over,so it was £29 delivered. Its actually pretty nice, not beat up, only a couple bits of weld splatter on it, unless the paint is hiding a crack it will turn out nice with a strip and a decent colour.
The little one is a Woden B00 which has some wear, hack saw marks etc but I find it hard to resist the little ones.

Yes its that one, I was amazed I was the only bidder, Records usually sell to well on ebay for me, I stick to the lesser known usually. Its been sprayed with out bothering to clean it first so it should be an easy job cleaning it up.
Woden is 2 1/4". For some reason Woden used 1/4 sizes a lot.

Here's a picture of my new vise that's coming next week. I picked it up on e**y. It's a model 164 Prentiss Shepard vise. I think it's about 100 years old--at least. According to the old catalog listing I've seen, it's the largest of these types that were made and weighs about 45 pounds. I think it should clean up nicely.

I like these older vises, that have some history to them. As a matter of fact, I've become really interested in the vises that were made by Merrill Bros of Brooklyn, NY.

The trouble is, there don't seem to be many of them still around. Too bad--they were a nicely-designed and manufactured piece of work. And the company has an interesting history as well. They made the cable turnbuckles that were used to build the Brooklyn Bridge. If anyone knows the whereabouts of their vises, I'm all ears. Rusted, broken, parts vises, it doesn't matter. If it says "Merrill Bros Brooklyn, NY", I'm interested.

***** Joe, it happens all to often. When I picked up my 5198 the seller held it for me 3 days. A good dude and kept his word even with multiple guys making offers from around Pa. and out of state. I sweated it out though, been burned all too often.

I just lost one last week same deal as yours, been waiting to see it show up here or on E-pay.

Don't knock the gold! I rattle canned a Record No.6 that has been to hell and back, slapped on some new jaws, and it disappeared within the day. A lot of people wanted it to be a part of their table!

I'm glad I didn't bid on that now. It's found a good owner, and I'd have felt rotten if I'd found out I'd bid against you on it.

Lovely little vices. I have a B1 here, and they're sturdy little things for their size.

CW: awesome vise and another one you added to my growing list of vises i would like to own.

ALL: so i hear that one of our members that was bragging about how rich his vise area is and telling us and posting the actual craigslist ads of them before he bought them. then also wanting sympathy for one selling before his scheduled appointment days later. sound familiar.

it's to bad Stump man and a few of us in my area don't live on that side of the US because you are lucky to get 15-30 minutes over here before it's sold.

I know i mentioned that i was maybe going to quit buying vises and i just added up how many i bought this week and its 6 and possibly 4 more this weekend. i did sell a couple to GJ members this week so I'm still under one a day. i guess i'll stop buying vises next week.

pictures and details to follow after i OWN them.

cheers

My guess is that the jaw was clearanced for a reason. In my opinion, it's not a big deal and easily fixed with new jaws or by welding up the existing ones. Unless it is causing you a problem, I would leave them as is since it makes your vise unique.

Seller is the *******...

+1

Once the deal was made, the seller should not have sold it. But if there was no deposit and the seller had a history of no-show buyers, I can see his rationale...

Hi b100,

Glad to be back. Kind of went away from vises. I've chosen an impossible quest for myself--to find a Merrill Bros Model 4 vise with 8-inch jaws, opens 12 inches, and weighs 212 pounds. Oh, and to find one in good shape, reasonably-priced, and that's not located halfway around the world!!!
In the meantime, I'll be showing a few other toys that I've picked up.

Fretters and Outlaw: and i thought you might call me on the sentence before that. nothing too special, but there was that 5 inch Prentiss and 5 inch Reed that appeared on my radar and are going in the cabinet.

Rocket: always buy the older more unique heavier duty vise if you have a choice is a rule i live by if it doesn't have any issues. I can't recall the one you didn't buy, but if it was a double swivel Parker quit calling the lady crazy because she is still underpriced.
