1st BendPak - mixed feelings

In November of 2014 I purchased a BendPak HD-7W 4-post.

BendPak HD-7W Lift
Aluminum Approach Ramp Upgrade
JP3 Jack Plates (2)
5210997 Wheel Kit
Air Storage Bottle
Drip Trays

Total was ~$4K - there was some minor damage in transit but no show-stoppers - more on that later.

My first challenge was the manual, the instruction booklet that came with the lift did not include this model but a quick search of BendPak's site got me what I needed. I had not assembled a 4-post and was in no rush ... working alone it took about 4 days to put it all together and I enjoyed the process.

Biggest challenge for me was dealing with the weight and size of the parts - in retrospect doing it alone may not have been the best idea but using an engine hoist made it do-able.

Ultimately it has all worked out - it works well, sturdy as hell, and fits the need.

Prior to this I have only had a Dannmar MaxJax so I have not dealt with many vendors. Here are my thoughts...

Purchase and delivery.
I purchased the lift from Automotive Service Equipment - when I initially contacted BendPak with questions I got a return call addressing my questions so I just worked with them. I think BendPak pricing is pretty much the same everywhere and ASE was very knowledgeable and helpful. They engaged local help for delivery and I think they made the buying experience pretty easy.

One point - they suggested that I may not need the air-bottle (accumulates air from the piston on the way up and holds it to release the locks) and I did not listen - they were right. I have found that the system bleeds over time and I wind up using a compressor anyway.

Assembly-
While it all went well there were multiple errors in the documentation and I did have an issue at the end with the locks. When I called BendPak for help they told me to remove the 2nd spring on each lock - problem solved. But no where is this mentioned in the manual. That ticked me off so... on 12-9 I sent them a letter outlining what I think are deficiencies I in their documentation.

I did not expect to hear back from BendPak - I was not disappointed.

Damaged parts-
I also followed up with them regarding the minor parts that were damaged. After multiple emails they have sent me most of the parts but it has been about 3 months now. I am still missing a small part which I will just go buy.

So... net net - nice product, with some challenging documentation. If I put these together for a living I bet none of these things would have been a problem.

Great pics! Thanks for posting your experience.

BTW, what is your garage height? Did you have the garage door tracks raised closer to the ceiling before getting your lift? 120V or 240V motor?

BTW: welcome to GJ!

jvitez,

The garage height is 14 feet - it was built with two doors - one single 12 foot door for an RV (one day ... still saving up!) and the other double door is low (the one the lift is behind) and it was installed with the tracks going to the ceiling. The lift has the 240v motor.

Thanks for the welcome - my 1st post but I spent hours reading what others said prior to buying the lift. GJ is an awesome reference - thank you!!!

No wonder you bought a nice lift: 14 ft ceilings, high track doors, wall mounted openers, plumbed in compressed air: perfect! You've got a great set up. I've got 12 ft ceilings but regular 8 ft doors, so I'm trying to decide do I get the tracks raised with new openers or just build a detached shop before getting a lift myself.

I hear you about hours spent on GJ. A co-worker introduced me to this fabulous forum and I've learned a metric tonne of information since. It amazes me ho much accumulated knowledge is available here.

But now, let me guess: a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon (aren't I smart...:D), an E-class Mercedes wagon, and a 1970 Dodge Challenger?

You mentioned possibly building a detached garage - that's a tough one. With 12ft ceilings in what you already have that is awesome - ... maybe it comes down to space and if you have what you need with what you have. It is great that you have options.

I have never previously had wall mounted openers but I really like them - great answer to the issue of not getting in the way of the lift.

Yes Rubicon, but the wagon you referenced is an old Chrysler Pacifica (MB did have a part in Chrysler at that time so I understand what you saw). The old car is a 1970 Dart.

Can you tell I'm a MOPAR guy?

Congrats on the lift. I have had my HD-9XW for a few years now and not sure what I would do without it.
BendPak does sell a good product. I say SELL cause I believe theirs, and just about all other if not all lift distributors, have their pats made over seas and then reassembled here. Some parts may be made on US soil but I feel this is a marketing gimmick to say "Made in the USA".
Shipping large items like this can also take its punishment on the parts, and that is why it is easier to send a can of paint with the lift instead of numerous phone calls.
As for their directions. I agree with you again. They spent more time on their adverting adds then the written directions.
But to sum it up, I feel BendPak makes one of the best residential lifts. You can pay more for the other commercial grade lifts but I am not sure you will get a better piece of mind.

I agree with you on pretty much everything but I really like your point regarding advertising vs the instruction manual - well put.

Thanks!!

Looks good all set up.

I just bought a Direct Lift (Rotary) two-post. Was all ready to install myself, until I found out it was only $550 to deliver & install.

That sounds like a pretty good deal, how much was the lift itself?

Great setup and cars you have there by the way...!

Love my bend pack operation. But if you buy Bend Pack just expect it to be damaged. The packaging is cheap and is basically ****. I should have sent mine back but it is a job just getting it off the truck and I was excited to get it, my bad. It is way too easy to blame all the damage on the shippers and it is cheaper to send out spray paint and decals than to properly package the item. (this pisses me off) Mine was handled so poorly that the tower is actually gouged. I worked in Mfg half my life and believe me they know their pks *****, they just don't care.

I order a bendpak xpr10 I live in Michigan. The day I was expecting the lift to arrive I called the shipper for a delivery time. Sorry it was left on the truck and headed to New york.:scared:
Called New york with tracking number. Yes its here and its on its way back to Michigan!! Great now I have a picture of what my lift is going to look like with all this added traveling. When it showed up 2 days late all the packaging was intact and lift had NO DAMAGE. It was a happy day for me!! I've been using for the last 4 months. A car hoist in your own shop is great!

My bendpak scissor lift arrived with some rusted parts. The lift pad set was rusted as was some of the lift arm hardware. Called and provided pics and they sent replacement hardware and an entire set of lift pads. Now i have a backup set.

My HD9 came with some scuffs and scratches. Was I dissappointed? Yes. Did I get over it and touch it up with the supplied paint? Yes.

Damaged or rusty parts certainly are a problem...but a scuff or scratch is to be expected in something this size, shipped via truck. I realize it could've been packaged better...but it's a car lift...not fine china.

I get it...for the most part....we are home tinkerers and our stuff will be argueably more cherished and better cared for than the same lift in a shop. However, I think it;s a bit unrealistic to expect a service lift to arrive wrapped in cotton and foam peanuts.
