garage door drum operation

I'm having some problems with the operation of my 9' x 7' garage door (has a torsion spring located above the garage door)...hoping for some input on suggestions as to what the problem may be.

Last Monday morning when it was -10 degrees outside I opened my garage door with my automatic opener, then pulled my truck out of the garage, and hit the remote to shut the door, and then noticed it wasn't shutting. So I get out and inspect the garage door and notice that the cable on each side of the garage door that are supposed to be tightly wrapped around the drum are somewhat loose and actually partially wrapped around the rod that the torsion springs is on. In order to shut the door, I had to unclip the cable on both sides that attaches to the bottom of the garage door.

Today, I wrapped the cable on the drum and reattached each end of the cable, then tried opening and closing the garage door. When opening, the drum seems to turn a bit on both sides, then stops, and I have all this loose slack on both sides with the door fully open. Any advice as to what needs done to fix the issue?

To fix this properly, you need to unwind the torsion spring, reset the drums and cables and then rewind the springs. It is the only way to fix this properly. While everything is unwound and free, replace any worn bearings and cables.

The torsion spring has a rod that runs thru it and connects to the two pulleys on the ends of the rod. Contrary to popular belief, the garage door opener isn't supposed to lift the weight of the garage door. The torsion spring(s) lifts maybe 80 percent of the weight of the door and the opener lifts the other 20 percent. If the torsion spring collar is not gripping the rod tightly, it will slip and the rod won't turn, which means the cables won't get wound up and will be loose. I would check the torsion spring collar to be sure it is gripping the rod tightly. There will be one or two set screws holding the collar to the rod.
