CW: So how many vises do you own and you still are excited like a kid in a candy store when you have an appointment to buy another one? me too so you are not alone and maybe another member that posts on this thread can admit to that.

The youngest lad has made reference to me being like a fat kid in a sweet shop too, so I think there's a few of us who haven't lost the excitement factor. :D

Finished this Parker last week, the Hammered Black paint is hard to get good pictures. The vise is pretty tight for 75 years old. Heavy at 130lbs. Not a swiveling Ba$t^rd but one I would choose if I was looking for a vise. Jaws fit pretty good, the old jaws went to a new member. I managed about 25 degrees on the back lash with a Bronze washer that has about 3% aluminum to make it wear and last longer then hard steel washers. I also made a custom key to hold the nut tight against casting but with just enough slack to not cause any wear on the spindle threads. The old handle had plenty of hammer marks and I decided to replace it. Sure was a fun restore.

Beautiful job KM.---Now who's going to want to take a whack at that Pretty thing?---You literally restored it right out of service.

Oh I hope not VA, that would be the last thing I would hope for, the jaws can handle 1100 degrees before losing any hardness, it would be a great weld shop vise. The square slider has plenty of scars, the rest was in pretty good shape before I started.

Mac: nice to see you posting again. back from Vise rehab or the hospital from trying to lift the 300 pound Craftsman vise you found?

seriously i think that is Joe's Emmert vise he did an awesome job restoring, but his wife won't let him keep it on their kitchen counter any longer and he won't put it in the cold wet garage.

Hey Drive,

Thanks for the message. Yes I've been away from home & shop for a long time as I'm rebuilding a family house. Haven't been able to keep up with you guys, this thread is flies.

I'm only home for a couple of days, I have to say that I truly miss working in my shop.

Cheers

the Emmerts are a great vise, and I've seen that particular vise in person but I have to warn you the seller is an 'A' hole.:lol_hitti

Hey Striper,

Leave it to a GJ vise member to already have experience with this particular vise.
These Emmert 6a vises are so useful and versatile, I highly recommend.

Why are you selling it?

I really regret passing on a Emmert that was only for $150, at the time I only had $10 in my pocket and had 5 vises sitting in my car at the time waiting to brought home. Now I would have left all five vises at the side of the road for that Emmert. It had the attachments for the round jaws. Sometimes ignorance isn't always bliss.

Gorgeous Kevin!! I can't imagine anybody not loving the thought of having that vise bolted to their bench. Cameras just can't capture black vises very well and having a hammered finish doesn't make it any easier. What experience I have shooting pictures of those has taught me the best images are taken outside on an overcast day with the focus set to a macro shot. You want absolutely no shadows going. Love that Parker for sure!

Great color millipede! Looks super. Would you mind telling me what brand and shade that paint is? Thanks.

Thanks balane. Its rustoleum hammered. It doesn't really say the name but the cap was like a light blue sort of. They also had a silver hammered in rustoleum but I don't think it looked as cool. Ace is the place. Lolz.

well i spent a lot of time effort and love on the Emmert but i really wont use it. I'm not a collector. My shop is wet and unheated so if I put it out there it will rust up quick. This is a complicated vise to disassemble and rebuild and it has lots of bare metal. Lastly, i love the rebuilding part and the finding. Oh and I have three in college.

I am lucky though in that there is always another barn to search and other vises to find. Since I bought this Emmert I found 2 more of these so I am sure I'll find more.

CW & Fretters: i'm glad to hear i'm not the only one that still enjoys the hunt and bringing home an old vise gem after owning a few. even if they look like the ones i just posted.

KMScott: that Parker 956 is amazing and since i owned one of those beast i can attest that you probably got your exercise restoring that 130 pounder. also your new Parker jaws are looking more amazing every one you make.

Mark: i didn't see the $2800 Tucker so did you happen to save any pictures of it to post?

ALL: so not sure if there is any savable parts on these big old mill or drill press vises, but i dug them out of a back room, bought them and brought them home just the same. if anything i'll have some nice paperweights because they weigh about 100 pounds each.

also found this beat up Yost 6 inch vise that at the very least might have a good screw and vise nut for one of my other gems or it might be a good learning tool for me to weld on some jaw that was hit with a grinder too many times. or i might just mount it to an outside bench and use it because it still works.

after showing all the awesome vises you guys do i probably should have put these on the Vise Repair 101 thread, but i did mention here that i bought a few vises this past week and some come home like this.

Anyone ever seen one of these? Yes, thats an all wood vise made by an Amish craftsman over 50 years ago. Seller is the same guy who sold me the Anvil. Whats your idea as to value? Anyone want it? I I'm tapped out. Its going to be expensive. He paid 195 30 years ago.

I bet with a quick drive out to Lancaster, PA you could find an Amish craftsman to build you one using the same techniques for less that that. :lol_hitti

Beautiful! A lot of great paint jobs on this thread, but there is something to be said for the simplicity black vise. Painted where it should be, bare metal where it shouldn't be painted, beautiful jaws, beautiful handle....there are just enough nicks on the slide to give it character.

I saw it for sale on your website, someone will be getting a super vise at a great price

Anybody ever hear of a Zyliss vise? There's an older looking one for sale around here that I might try and pick up. Another interesting looking piece.

CJ: Zyliss was my first vise i bought when i bought my home almost 30 years ago. it was $200-250 at the home show and still works great. i can clamp it to a sawhorse in the yard or to the side of a bench or deck. they usually go fairly cheap now ($50-$100) if you have all the parts. it's also aluminum so light, but fairly heavy duty. i'll probably never sell my original one and i think i picked up another one along the way in case one of my sons might want to borrow it.

Hey guy's, thanks for the kind words. autopts, FMC1959, oldldh, drivesitfar, millipede, balane, tedsters, va.grouseman. I really enjoy working on these old beasts. I wish I had a stump like Balane but with all the snow and more coming It would not be feasible. Thanks for the tips balane, we get 300 days of sunshine out here. Gotta figure something out for the pic's.

My next vise is a Wilton and it had the jaws welded on, got it real cheap on CL, wait till you see these custom Parker/Wilton jaws going on this one. All I want to do is play all day in the shop.

That guy does come up with a lot of big iron. Imagine the feeding frenzy when we get Demoman declared mentally incompetent and send all his vises to foster homes.:willy_nil

It looks like there might be a weld or braze along the base on the left side of the Hollands. For the $2650 asking price potential buyers should check on that. Also I don't think that one is from the 1800's as claimed in the ad. I don't think they had the 4 hole base until the 1930s.

If anyone wants an equal sized vise with a swivel base for $650 less than this one, hit me on a PM:pimpflash.

Thanks Captain:
My level of technology stopped at the vacuum tube and TTL level.

Edit: Where are those buyers like that whenever I'm selling vises.

I agree

How is this vise better in quality than one of the good Emmert Pattern maker vises that has all the parts in excellent condition or been restored?

They sell for a 1/3 of that price and that is still expensive!

While Veritas is a good company with some cool products but I would never equate them to be more significant in quality than a top Emmert pattern maker vise in beautiful condition.

I had a different image in my head when you first told me about it. It looks great, but I think it will only sell to the industrial chic crowd as objet d'art. Maybe someone in the "It Crowd" will stick in on a mantle and fill it with books they've never read.

Your reasoning is based on logic. What something is worth, especially on e-bay, does not usually follow the path of logic. :lol_hitti

Emmert's always fetch top dollar, many people know of them and want them. Probably not too many people know of the Tucker, and few would pay the (crazy?) price of $2800.

You get 2 or 3 people that like it, want it, and know there aren't many opportunities to get one in the future, and this is what happens.

Well stop 2 is out of the way. Here is my new Monarch 225 with 6.5" jaws. The sellers grandfather took it out of the Bethlehem steel mills when he retired. It has been in the family at least 60 years. Man is this a clean, clean vise in really gorgeous condition. Jaws are beautiful and the gold paint was free. Handle is huge and perfect. Really hit a home run with this one. 135 lbs!!

Last stop coming up!

I bet that Tucker is a lot rarer than good examples from the old makers, It could well be the only NOS in box out there, also a real possibility that it will never be used.
