Balane: I like that OD paint job on that vise! All it needs is a 5 pt white star!

For the stump: Gather up all bits you can, and soak the stump and all remains in Epoxy or resin and just cast that bad boy into place!

I have several wrench's by the maker H.D. Smith & Co. But never heard of H. R. Smith & Co. I'm guessing the casting is a lil ruff and is an H.D. Smith & Co. Any way , over the years I often wondered if H.D. ever made vise's but never found one. I guess I have my answer. Any one else ever see one?

I have had a HD Smith vise for a long time mainly becauseSmith is my last name. It is rough and all that I have seen were in the same shape. Must have been a poor jaw design. I have seen the same vise with different names on it but I can't remember what they were right now. I think I have another version on it that I will look at tomorrow in the pile.

Top,---I believe that is H.B. Smith & Co..---If you look close I think that is a B..---Anyway here is some more H.B. Smith's you can compare to.

Getridaone's on page 1109, post 22168----and Autopt's on page 777 post 15536.---The H. is missing on Autopt's, wouldn't you know it.

I've got another incomplete one somewhere, in the garage I believe. It's way to cold to go to the garage, sorry.

I take it this little vise is missing it's swivel base? The fixed part of the vises base appears to be a different design to the others posted in this thread.

I think the paint job on the lettering isn't particularly impressive, that said the actual raised letters are somewhat indistinct on the casting anyway.

I know the patent date is 1873 but is there any way of dating the production date on these vises?

Should I strip and derust this vise or leave it as is?

Cwazy,---Here's a chart for your 94 on the Hall Pattern.

And here is a Stanley Hardware Ad that shows a #92, similar to your #94.

Zoom,---I don't have your H.B. Smith in the index. I don't know if I over looked it or if you ever posted it, but yours is the most legible of all.---I will include it now that it is posted for sure.---Anyway, I needed another eye candy fix, and that first pic gets the monkey off my back every time.---Looks more like a car lot.---Beautiful stuff.

A Wilton or two? Dang! Impressive. :rocker:. That settles the H. B. issue. Any one know if H.D Smith & Co. made a vise?

Haha "sea of tetanus."

That's a huge collection!

How about you part with some of those to some deserving GJ members.

Smokin' deal on this Craftsman 5126 for anyone in the Saginaw area

http://saginaw.craigslist.org/tls/4866438209.html

Craftsman 5216.JPG

that vise has been on here so long at least 4 months on and off, its actually not a good deal the handles missing and its all cobbled up you can find some good deals on here if you look closely and make sure the vise has all the parts on it,
and no cracks or weld.
the dead giveaway is being on there a month for $25 if it was a good deal it more then likely would have been gone real fast

For those of you not watching, Autopts is conducting an "experiment" on eBay.

He has two Wilton 740's up for auction. Both are in comparable (as in exquisite) condition. But one of them is the Snap-On version!

I just checked, and the SO bid is at $202 while the regular Wilton is at $99.

I can't wait to see how this ends.

Like waving a "Snap-On Red" flag in front of a bunch of bulls (and I like Snap-on, by the way).

Tedsters, apparently sarcasm is difficult to convey via keyboard ... even though I am only 10+ posts deep in Garage Journal, I do know enough to recognize that Craftsman "anvil" as junkaroo. While I do applaud the creator's ingenuity, that's all I applaud, this is an abomination to everything vise (and anvil!).

Tri: that's what the little characters are for just to the right of where you write your posts. add on and we won't think you are one of the guys that would actually ask seriously for us to tell them if it's a good vise or not. it all a learning process so as you post more we'll figure you out.:dunno::beer::lol_hitti:evil::lol:

BTW how is that old Reed coming along or is it too cold to paint in your garage..

Zoomie: i do like your retirement savings plan and just remember to tell your relatives how much they are worth if you don't end up selling them all to pay medical bills that seem to be even more out of control.

by all means don't trip on one of those and hurt yourself so a Dr. that can't use them gets them. if i was closer i'd help you set up more shelving and lift those big Muthers up on a shelf.

Very nice and in another section of GJ have you posted pictures of your old Anvils? or here works for me and i'm sure others won't mind either.

I've been watching these 2 as well. Maybe I should find an old vise and paint it red with the snap on logo and post it on eBay for the SO vultures.

I'd love to get my hands on a Samsonia too. More to see what the differences are between those and the Parkinson only branded ones than owt else. If I could get my hands on a No.37, I could do a direct side by side comparison with the No.7.

Today I picked up a very good condition Samsonia 37, it even has original paint on it which is blue and interestingly the part the tommy bar goes through also has some blue paint left on it. (Which now makes me think the Parkinsons No6 I have with red paint on the same part may also be original)

The seller was an old bloke who had been left the vice by his father who had owned it from new, I did asked if it had been repainted and he said it hadn't. I've never seen a parkinson/samsonia vice with such clean jaws.

Initial comparison to my Parkinson No 7 shows there are quite a few differences including being about an inch shorter, however this only reduces the max jaw opening by a 1/4". Will do some proper side by side comparison pictures at some point

That samsonia is rather nice, makes my Parkinson No 7 that I thought wasn't bad look very rough, also wondering why they have that little nub jutting out of the base casting at the side.

Dutch: I'll be honest it didn't look that good in the auction, the paint was hidden away under dirt and pictures weren't that great. Also happened that today was the first time I needed to go into the office in the last two years and the vice was just around the corner from there so it was just meant to be ;)

BTW recognise this? Needs some dremel action on the countersink still.

I just came home with this old Athol 323 1/2X vise. I'll likely clean it up and try to pass it on. Does anyone have any ideas about the date range of manufacture for this thing?
Thanks,
jwp

My guess is going to be around 1920 looking at the handles and the embellishments. Attached is a similar 324 1/2X that I restored & sold a few years ago.

I do know that they are top shelf vises.

My bracket is looking great, that will do nicely.
Just so happens that I won a Samsonia on ebay tonight, I will have to go pick it up when I get the time but it was only £20 so I just couldn't let it go with no bids on it. I have also bought another Woden 190. The madness continues, a month ago I didn't own a quick release and now I will have 4.

What is there to clean? I think it looks awesome the way it is. Maybe grease the lead thread.

Hi All,
Haven't been in the vise thread in awhile. Hope everyone is doing well.
I've been busy with other projects, work and the fact its just too darn cold to do anything in the shop.
Was alerted to a CL ad by a fellow GJ'er >>Thanks Jerry<< local mechanic was retiring and selling some stuff so me and a buddy get set up with an appointment to scrounge and pick. Within a minute of walking in we both spied a Wilton bullet and asked "how much?' reply was $20!! couldn't say sold fast enough. While I was looking it over Adam found a smaller Wilton bullet ,4" vise and we nabbed that as well for a whopping $10!
I'd say it was a good pick this evening.
