Do you tip the snap-on truck guy?

Just wondering, I've never ordered anything off a tool truck but needed something and wanted snap-on. The other day a truck pulled into the gas station I was at and I went up and talked to him and ordered my part. It will be in this week and I didn't know if it is customary to tip these guys or not considering how high snap-on prices are? I searched high and low and couldn't find anything on it, just wondering what you guys do that buy tools from a truck guy.

If you're not a mechanic by trade and won't be spending much money with him AND he's driving out of his way to accommodate you, I might consider tipping him a little bit. If you'll be doing repeat business, are spending a bunch and/or you're the one going out of your way to meet him, I wouldn't even consider tipping him.

But just walking up to them at one of their regular stops, no. Generally if you're just a walk-in and not a regular customer, you're going to end up paying full catalog price, anyway.

These guys aren't minimum-wage employees; they're actually the owner of their business. I typically don't tip business owners, with some occasional exceptions, of course.

Not a chance. I live and breathe snap-on, but my guy charges full retail, never makes any deals for any reason, and keeps all of the promo stuff at home in a massive pole building calling it his "retirement plan."

Ok, thanks guys, just didn't want to make a faux-pas. I'm going to where he is at and I think I'll be ordering more stuff, although everytime I look at the prices I shudder lol.

I do but not with money.

I give him candy or food, he enjoys it. Today giving him a little toffee I bought at Vt country store last time up there.
& he also gives me fresh fish from his weekend adventures.

If I caught him at a gas station or something and was not a regular customer, then yes I would strongly consider tipping, and would definitely tip if he's making a special stop at your house/work and you're not a regular. Remember, for him to take the time to let you on the truck or come to you out of the way once, that's time/fuel that he's expending as a courtesy to you. He certainly doesn't have to take that time or make that effort, and it's nice if he does.

As a professional mechanic and the tool truck driver comes to me as a regular customer, then no

Depends...both my MAC & SO guys cut me deals on stuff...I'm only a "Regular Walk On" in that I don't work at a shop, I meet up with them...I've bought Coffee's for them, gave one a Gift Card once, bought my last SO guy lunch a couple times...but it MORE Then came out in the wash...by my calculations I'm still WAY ahead of the game.

Yes, I do tip/help out people in various capacities...These people are human too...what goes around comes around in this world.

Well I'm meeting him wherever he is, and plan to buy more stuff from him. I might just buy him a cup of coffee or something I'll see. Ok for those of you that say you would tip how much would you tip him?

I tip people that deserve it...whether that is a Snap on guy or the dude cleaning my Yellow Fin.

My local driver did me a solid....I had the 3/4" head, 3/4" 36" breaker bar, and the 3/4" swivel head. The detent ball on the breaker ball fell out, rendering it useless. Well, SO went from 13/16" OD to 15/16" OD on the new stuff. So, if I got just a new replacement bar, it would not fit my head and swivel. I called SO, and the lovely ladies could not grasp what was happening, and kept saying the ratchet head is rebuildable. lol.

The driver took all 3 pieces and ordered new ones for me. That's like $600 he floated. And I don't spend a lot of money with him. So, I passed along $50 worth of Outback steakhouse gift cards so he could take his wife to dinner.

I appreciate people when they go above and beyond, and I try my best to show it and reciprocate.

But to answer your ?, no, I wouldn't tip just for a walk up purchase.

Never anymore. I did when there was a driver worth a damn, and went out of his way for customers. But that hasn't happened in over a decade.

The obscene catalog price they all seem to want today more than cover any "convenience" of having them hand delivered by his majesty the Snap On driver/prison work release participant (no really).

I just order from website now, same price without the blab and drama, and UPS doesn't need a gate pass every time.

I give my driver a bottle of Cabo Wabo, every year, if I believe he's given me the value I deem worthy of a gift.

He's gotten a bottle for the last 4 years.

I'll bring him a coffee if there's a drive thru on the way to see him. I don't think a monetary gift would be appropriate for a tool truck guy. I don't have a real reason. It just doesn't seem fitting.

My dealer has trophies saying he is the number 1 snap-on franchise in the country. He damn sure don't need any tips. He would rather have you buy stuff from him and give you a quality service at a good price.

What's this "if he's going out his way" and "if you're not a regular customer" then you tip ? I go out if my way for my clientele every day, as a matter of fact I kiss their butts. I never get a tip, I never expect a tip.

The mentality of you're not a regular and I'm doing you a favor is laziness pure and simple, and shouldn't deserve a tip.

In 10 1/2 years I never got a tip. I did have the wife of the shop owner make me some cookies one time at Christmas and there was a another shop owner that gave out Mrs. Fields pecan pies at Christmas.

With the majority of peoples attitudes towards Snap-on dealers, I doubt many of them get tips. Most people want a discount, interest free financing, and a free gift and they think they are doing you a favor by paying their bill as agreed.

My matco guy lives a couple streets down he stops at my work but I will on occasion stop by his house and bring him a 6 pack of bud light. That's what he drinks and usually we split it anyways. He has been good to me so far it also helps when he gets stuff I want he will hold it for me. I guess you can call it a tip

If your not a shop or regular customer and you want to keep buying from the guy, a little incentive wouldn't hurt. Remember, he doesn't have to sell to you. If you were a shop it would be a different story. Buy the guy a coffee of offer him lunch, something like that, not a monetary tip. Personally, I would find a Cornwell dealer and save some money  :D

Why would you not have just ordered online?
Free shipping and it seems you would probably get it quicker anyway. The only reason not to would be in case he had it in stock or if you wanted to help him out, which you are doing by simply letting him place your order.

Do you tip the owner of the garage?

I often do. I can do most of the repairs that pop up on my personal vehicle, but I often don't have the time. I drive 500-1,000 miles a week, and can't afford to have my vehicle sitting in a lot waiting for a mechanic to get to it. In fact, I've had to rent vehicles just to get through the repair process.

My mechanic often moves heaven and earth to get my repairs done fast and as affordably as possible. He owns his own shop and is the only employee so I often round my bill up when I pay him. It depends on the repair, but usually an extra $25 or $50, if I can afford it that day.

I wouldn't tip the Snap On guy, but I don't see one on a regular basis. My payment, in full and in cash, should be appreciated enough.

I always give SO dealers a tip. My tip is "lower the overall prices and you'll get more business".

It hasn't worked.

A Snap On guy is an independent business man , he has a lot of money and time invested in his business. He doesn't need tips but a little respect would be good. He'll warranty your tools whether you buy from him or not, he finances most purchases for nothing and he typically works 10 hours or more a day servicing his customers .Snap On tools aren't cheap but he isn't making as much as a lot of people think, he has a lot of expense, they make a decent living and they earn every penny .

I sold a new toolbox for him not too long ago as well as send some sales his way here and there. I do more then enough for a guy that makes a fortune off me and i pay my bill unlike some people.

I don't tip him, but I have bought him a coffee if I am meeting up with him. Nothing wrong with a little mutual respect. Probably helps that I have been dealing with the same guy for over 10 years now.

that's funny(odd not haha) that this just came up. i've never considered tipping any of my tool truck guys, but now i will.
the funny part is just yesterday i was talking to a co-worker about tattoos and he asked me if i thought something was a good price. i said yes it was after you factor in the $50 to $100 tip. he looked at me like i had 2 heads:lol:
than he asked other guys at the shop and started to feel like a cheap douche.

i do tip a tattoo artist, my barber, taxi driver, and server at a resturaunt.

and i dont get tipped at work, but i do love it when customers bring me/us cookies/brownies.

I think being a good customer is a good enough tip for a Snap On dealer. I always pay cash and my Snap On dealer seems to like that. I'm just a home mechanic but buy from Snap On at my friends tire shop.
