That is a nice one and I think the only Split-Phase 3/4hp model that was made. Actually, not an unreasonable price for a "big boy" with an original stand.

It's out in Athens. I saw it about an hour after he posted it, and if I wasn't restoring my 1940s 10" grinder I would have snapped it up by now. I was lamenting to one of the guys at work that I hate not buying it, I just can't justify the cost even though it looks really complete.

If it ever gets to the $100-$125 range I'd have to buy just out of principle, even though I really don't need another grinder. :/

TM, you can be there by morning. ...
I know, I know. So many Blocks, so little time.:(

BTW - does anyone have, by chance, a switch like this they want to part with? I need 1 for the 1-HP, being restored.

A fellow GJ member gave me a 'heads-up' on a nice 1/3-HP Block. I picked it up yesterday.

Thanks FrankLee!

Just a month before this concert. I don't know what I did with my 2 un-torn tickets, but I was there!

If you were there, I'm sorry we didn't bring enough cold chicken to pass around. That's why we waited to eat it until after dark.
But, I swear I heard someone behind me exclaim: "Hey! They have CHICKEN!" :willy_nil
Or maybe, my girlfriend's mom put something in those brownies that made me hungry and paranoid. :p

FrankLee - thanks again for the head-up AND for giving me a hand loading all this hardware during the snow/sleet storm.

I'll be right back with some pictures.

I was really after these WWII 'card files' like my dad used for his radio/TV repair side-business.

I called him and asked if he would ship it.

He is checking on shipping costs.

I guess I should have called. I messaged him this morning but no response.

I also talked with him.

I asked if he'd be willing to take it to FedEx. He said he'd do it.

He said he'd text me with his PayPal account, after he found it. That was over 2 hours ago.

I realized I stepped-on bczygan's contact/offer.

I am sorry, I was geeked about the switch, and other parts for the 1-HP Sad Sack resto.

I will Pass, if either of you guys want it.

Sounds like you got it handled. It would have been a nice addition for me, but I was mostly interested in the base. Maybe next time.

Nice piece of history.

They went a little too far in thrifting-out on their toggle switches. Keep 'em running!

Damn TM, 10.5 hrs away and you still beat all of us to it... Share some love :lol_hitti

Just kidding of course, but you bet if one shows up within driving distance from me, I won't be posting it here until it's home in my shop :bounce:

I understand, I've been known to go into stealth mode to land a prize Block.
:ninja:

It's strange, these 3/4 & 1-HP big boys with the bases go unseen for months. Then, there's 3 or 4 sightings, one right after the other. Wish I knew how to flush more out into the open.

BTW - wasn't the Torqueman who got the 3/4-HP one on a stand in Huntsville.
00o0o_56T07930NcF_600x450.jpg

But, I may get the 3/4-HP one out of Inland Empire Riverside, CA about 32 hours & 2,238 miles from me. If the seller gets it to FedEx today. :dunno:

Hey, it's 4 AM EST, should you be sleeping, like I should? My excuse is I woke up thinking of that Block in CA and decided what the hay might as well see what's brewing on the GJ.

WJD: happy to see a block has been passed down for 3 generations. those stones look pretty worn too. when you go to replace maybe the left one first you might want to put on a wire wheel unless you already have another grinder with one on it. nice picture and story.

TM: so you bought blocks in NY and CA in the same week? then showed us the cool organizers in your truck. and to top it off a brownie/chicken story at Woodstock. was it as muddy and poor living conditions as rumored or was it just a fun 3 days with some great bands and music?

BTW have you bought that little house with a 40 x 120 garage to store all these blocks at?

I think i have to agree with McB and others that these blocks tend to migrate towards the Block Whisperer in Detroit.

MT: sounds like you might have a stand coming with a cool grinder to your door soon. congrats.

Not this time. But, I should be able to wave at it as it goes by, on the way to TM

I just got back from my 1st estate sale.

I don't know what Columbian I have yet, but I will post pics in your thread, so you can help me ID it.

See my comments in Blue.

The music was truly awesome, the locals, and law enforcement were super. We parked about 5 miles from the stage and walked/hitched rides until we could hear the music. CCR echoed over the hill, and you would have swore he was from the Bayou.
The first group we caught sight of was Sly and the Family Stone. I can still feel the electricity that was in the air!
At sunrise, Grace Slick woke the groggy crowd with GOOOODMORNING PEOPLE!
We made our way down to within 100' of the stage and watched Joe Cocker sing his guts out. We headed back in a very round-about way to our car when the rain started up again. To this day I have no explanation to how we found it.
People were leaving because they were wet, dirty, and hungry. We were lucky, we still had a bit of food and we weren't dirty.
Oh, I recall several (3 IIRC) jets flying over the crowd to thunderous applause and cheers.

TM: Awesome tale of a great weekend that is still remembered 45 years later.:thumbup::thumbup:

I'm guessing Mrs. T is letting you bring the new blocks you restore into the spare bedroom now that your son made it over here to my side of the world. also vises tend to breed when left alone in the garage so 1st warning BEEE CAREFUL when buying vises.

BTW for all you guys that are freezing your tails off it's going to be sunny and 60 here today and that's about 30 degrees warmer and a lot dryer than normal.

MT: i'm sure something will find it's way to your garage with a Craftsman name on it soon. did you get my PM?

My BIL says he was there, but doesn't remember any music!

I wish, that's all taken over by the little sister's wedding preparation. Boxes are arriving almost as fast as my stuff from Amazon! ;)

Is that why the cat wants to go snooping around out there!?

Nice to be you.

TM: good (I mean great) posts as usual. so BIL didn't inhale, but he really liked the brownies i guess.

you might want to keep the blocks on a different side of the garage than the vises because we don't want hybrid breeding.

just a little more of a teaser for you guys snowbound. i helped a client clean her parents house yesterday and the view wasn't too bad. hard to see buy Mt. Rainier at 14,000 feet is in the middle of the arch on the entrance to the dock.

cheers to all the block heads

Thanks drivesit! Nice view.

BTW - 1 last post before I go off-line.

Anyone looking for metal framed eye-shields? I know a pair went for ~ $60 on eBay recently.

Take a look at what looks like a CM pre-pre-Block in the Akron-Canton, OH CL ad.
Work%20station_bench%20Tallmadge%20Akron%20Canton%20a.jpg

Are those metal frames? Also that looks like a nice little CM vise (Columbian 3.5"?).

http://akroncanton.craigslist.org/tls/4918606190.html

That grinder is a Dunlap I am pretty sure, not a Craftsman. Still probably ball bearing and yes the eyeshields are metal. I would still get it!

EDIT: **** that picture of the Dunlap is tiny. It came from this ebay listing. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Dun...757?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item259b535935

And then you will have to get the Companion, Commander and Kenmore bench grinders sold by Sears too!

Thanks for the comments on my block grinder guys:thumbup: Handing down tools runs long in my family. After seeing how good they look re-finished, I would like to do the same to mine.... It has by far earned it.

Been look'n for another one for a little while but apparently there was a mass migration of block grinders to the Michigan area.....:headscrat A person gotta spend some money these days to get something of equivalent to these well built bench grinders.

I have paid for this grinder and Koditten is shipping it today. Thanks for the heads up Zeet!

This is a 3/4 hp block in rough cosmetic condition but runs good. Looks like I will be using my NOS 7" wheels pretty soon!

Aargh no update on USPS tracker since Tuesday last showed still in Michigan.
