mobile 1 vs conventional oil for machine oil

I have some older equipment with oil cups. Is there any advantage to using something like Mobil 1 compared to a 5W or 10W-30 conventional? Typically, things like a belt driven grinder, or old electric motor. It would also be used for general machine oil for whatever else needs lubrication. My dad likes MMO, but it's fairly thin.

A quart of anything would last a long time, but I have plenty of 5W-30 around for the car if that works just as well.

I'm sure this has been beaten to death somewhere, but I haven't seen any recent discussions.

I use mixture of turbine oil and Supco 88 for all my motor needs.
Many application that called for "turbine oil" now say you can use 10W-30 full synthetic oil. This is because in recent years, they have added anti-foaming chemicals.

I special order a quart of turbine oil for a pressure washer. I got a quart of "generic" full synthetic. I paid way more than what a quart of Mobil 1 would have cost me !

Use what the Mfg recommends. You can buy it from Enco for cheap when they have their 20% off with free shipping no minimum sales. Otherwise there are seller on Ebay who sell small bottles.

For a lot of old machinery that specifies 30 wt oil, I use 30wt NON DETERGENT motor oil, as the normal stuff with detergent is bad for non-metallic sleeve bearings.

I second the straight 30 sae oil but also keep in mind a lot oils are different because they don't use fosferous in oil mostly so we started using break in oil at times

Does the detergent really matter for a total loss system? Oil is flowing out. Does the "crud" get stuck in the nooks and crannies instead of staying in suspension?

I need some lathe oil anyway, so I'll probably order some from Enco.

I can't answer those questions directly but the "big 3" of small air cooled engines, Briggs and Stratton, Kohler and Honda, now recommend 10W-30 detergent oil on all their current and older engines !

Honda specifies synthetic oil on the GX ("mini-4 stroke") engines.

Synthetics are safe for yellow metal gears and bearings. Most non-synthetics with detergents are not safe for yellow metals and will deteriorate them. I switched my older lathes (SB and Sheldon) over to Mobil 1 sometime ago and see no detrimental effects.

Where do you get true NON-Detergent Oil?
Last time I was looking for some to fill a cheap compressor with, I couldn't find a single drop of it anywhere locally.

Plenty of Straight 30...but all detergent.

straight 30 compressor oil non-detergent is pretty available at my local farm store...I also buy oil at yard sales whenever I find it...always someone sitting on a few cans (yes cans) I think the john deere dealership carries it as well if you have one near you.
