Finally got out to the shop today. It's about 16* outside and sleeting. Shop is up to about 31*.

Added a ground wire from the gun to the cabinet, and cabinet to the structure. Tested it out and it seems to have taken care of the static shocks I was getting.

I am calling the Sandblast Cabinet project complete.

Used an "EZ Universal Trapeze Hanger" as an air tool holder... Works pretty good. Plus, it was free. Was a vendor sample I got at work.

Nice job on the media blaster I have the same problem with not having enough compressor, (soon to be fixed)
Where do you store the media for the blaster?

The media sits in a collector in the bottom of the cabinet and the siphon tube sits in that. It's the funnel shaped portion here...

Got it, I made a sandblaster between the garage doors, works good but I used to put the media in a 5 gal bucket,
It was a pita, I'll modify this will be much easyer.

Did a serious inspection of the Scout body... It failed. The entire bottom 1/4 of the entire body is so rotted out, I could buy a complete scout for what it would cost me to fix... So I'm putting feelers out for a tub that is in decent shape.

Spent the day cutting up the old body and now I'm going to start on the chassis and drive train.

Sandblaster is running Fantastic 1/2 Cup! Much better than it was before.

Yeah, I'm ok with it. I knew it was going to be iffy from the start. Oh well. At least I know the chassis is good.

Found this Scout for a donor vehicle. It's in Arizona right now waiting on a ride to Pennsylvania where I will pick it up.

It needs some TLC, but nothing like my original one.

I agree. I'm trying to go about this like I did with the lathe. One section at a time. It may take a couple years for this one, but it will be better than new and out last me when i'm done.

Spent the day organizing, consolidating and salvaging what bits and parts off the old Scout body that were worth saving. Moved the old compressor to the shed and stacked all the body parts that are going to the scrap yard onto my trailer... Much beer was consumed during the process...

So I finally was able to get the one stubborn shock off the chassis. Low and behold, the bracket hole is egged out pretty good. Anybody know of a "fix" for this?

I'm thinking of maybe welding in a bushing to get it back square with the other side. Or welding in a washer. I really do not want to have to replace the entire bracket.

Got the rest of the back end of the chassis dismantled. The brake line is too corroded to reuse.

Now have to do some repair work tho the back of the frame and the shock bracket, then can start the cleaning and painting of the frame and rebuilding of the suspension and rear differential.

I would go with welding in a bushing on your shocker mount, its a bit hard to judge that from a pic.???

It's egged out almost twice the size it should be, which I think is 3/8". Apparently, this is fairly common from what I've googled about it... Haven't found any fixes for it, so I think cleaning the hole up and welding in a bushing is the way to go.

Browsed the webs for ideas on how to repair the egged out shock mount hole. Here's what I found...

1. Cut out and replace the mount. Nope...
2. Weld up and re-drill the hole. Possible...
3. Drill the hole out bigger and weld in a bushing. Bingo.

I think this may be my first lathe project! I think I will turn out a bushing with a shoulder and weld it in. I may even make one for all the shock mounts. Something like this except made from steel and not poly...

It was pretty cold up here this weekend, and I'm waiting for some tools I need so nothing much happened in the shop. I did get some Honey Doos done and even finished up doing our dreaded Taxes. Won't get much done this weekend either due to Easter, but that's ok...

Lots of things planned and prepped to do though, so stay tuned...

Got the front differential and leaf springs off the frame. The springs kicked my ****, but I prevailed...





Should be able to finish stripping the little bit that's left on the frame tomorrow and then prep it for some of the repairs needed and then it's clean and paint time.

Frame is completely stripped. Had a tough time trying to get the first shackle bushing out. Got the inner sleeve and rubber out using MAPP gas torch. That part was easy. Getting the outer sleeve out, not so much. Tried using a bushing tool. No go. Tried beating it with a chisel and an air hammer... Two hours later, she finally popped out.

I figured there had to be a better way... Surfed the webs while resting from the savage beating and found the brilliant idea to use a sawzall to slit the outer sleeve. Worked like a charm! Took less time to do the remaining three than it did to do the first one.

I then started looking into how I was going to fix the wallowed out rear shock mount.

Then I remembered something I saw Steve Bigler do...

I picked up some Strong structural washers and fabbed up a couple of tabs to weld over the mount to strengthen it and give me a true hole...

I think it will work good. The other side mount is fine, but I'm going to reinforce it also so they are both the same.

The washers are a top idea and like you say if you are doing one side, then do both.

Got the frame repairs completed today...







Took the frame outside, scrubbed it and pressure washed it. Took a wire wheel to it. Blew the rails out wit h compressed air. Musta got out 3 dozen acorns and 5 lbs of trash...



After it dried, coated the inside of the rails with Eastwood's Inside Frame Coating... Zinc Phosphate...



Brought it back inside and will start the KBS Frame Restoration coating process.

Did some more wire wheeling. Cleaned it one more time with KBS Aqua Clean and then prepped and etched it with KBS Rust Blaster.

Notice the floor is cleaner than it was too... I actually brought the hose inside and rinsed the frame, twice. Once after cleaning and again after the etch...

Frame has to completely dry now. Next weekend it's paint with KBS Rust Seal.

Just came across this thread and read it all. Looks like you stay pretty busy, and your mechanically gifted. I like that type of building, but I had idiots build mine, and ended up going with the standard pole barn.
Anyway, I noticed you might be using the VHT paint for your calipers? I used the brush on type of paint and had no luck with it sticking, I finally just tore the caliper down and had them powder coated. Maybe you will have better luck. OK, I'm watching for more, good luck.

Thanks for dropping by Bugthug. Good eye on the VHT! I got it to paint my differential covers and some other detail pieces and am thinking of painting my calipers. I have new ones for the rear that I may not touch, but I'm going to rebuild the front ones and may try it on them.

I really like them. They are holding up really well. I am abusing the hell of the floor. There's only a few cosmetic gouges n it from were I dropped some heavy metal, but that's the point, to protect the concrete. Gives it some personality. At some point I'm going to pick up a buffer and strip it and re polish it. That's were we'll see if it was worth it or not. So far though, I think it's good to go.

My official opinion: The Armstrong VCT is thick and can take a beating. Easy to maintain and worth the effort to install.

Had an interesting morning. Had a kidney stone break loose on Wednesday. It finally passed this morning. What a relief that was. I still feel like I've been beat about the kidneys with a rubber hose.

Despite that, I was still able to get out and put the first coat of KBS Rust Seal on the Scout frame...

Will put the second coat on in a couple hours.

I was in FR last night and saw what looked to be the sale of a Scout taking place in the WalMart parking lot. Was wondering if that was you buying another one.
