Any tips of how to mount this on a 2 x 10? Do I have to remove the reel assembly so I can mount the bracket with lag bolts? I'm worried about messing up the spring mechanism but there is barely enough room to tighten the bolts.

Installing this as we speak. Please help.

Screw a piece of plywood/whatever to two studs, then lag the mount into the wood.

This is sort of what I did, except my garage is a cinder block build with drywall on the inside. So I used four #10 drywall anchors (the common blue plastic ones) to mount a square piece of plywood to the drywall using the provided #10 screws with small zinc washers under the screw heads...then I lag bolted the reel to the plywood. I put the anchor holes/screws at the corner ends of the plywood to help distribute the load on the drywall.

Probably too late, but you could cut a board or piece of plywood, set the reel on it and drill through holes, then install carriage bolts from the back. Then install the board to your 2 X 10, then slide the reel over the carriage bolts and throw some nuts on it.

You honestly expect the drywall anchors to stand up to the weight of the reel and hose along with the force applied while pulling the hose out?

Just saw the post. The reel and hose is pretty heavy plus you are pulling on it. I mounted mine directly to the studs in the wall with big lag bolts. From my experience, I would NOT expect drywall anchors to hold up for very long, i.e., would be surprised if they made it through the first real use.

As has been said, those drywall anchors will not hold that reel. Either lag it to the studs or toggle bolt it to the cinder block.

Thanks you for all your suggestions but I was able to install it prior to your posts.

I ended up mounting the hose reel assembly to the 2 x 10 prior to installing both to the wall. Used 1/2" lag bots for the hose reel to the wood, and 5/16 lag bolts to the studs.

Air ratchet really helped a lot with those 1/2" lag bolts! Whew :) I figured that it's easier to install the reel on the 2 x10 while it is on the floor rather than someone holding it against the wall. Certainly time consuming to wrench those bolts with so little space to work with. Used a cordless impact driver with the bolts with (torx head) to finally mount everything on the wall.

So I didn't end up disassembling the hose reel.

Edit: If I knew how effective an impact driver could actually be, I would have bought one years ago! Been using a drill or a compact driver all this time. Didn't know what I was missing till I finally tried one!

I bought one of these HF air hose reels a couple of months ago. Very happy with it. I had to take it almost completely apart to get it properly mounted and to get the proper angles of the mounting bracket and hose guide. It was easy to take apart and put back together. It works perfectly............

Originally planned to do this but was worried that I might mess up the spring tensioner thingy. Besides, with 1/2 lag bolts that barely fit the holes, your hole template must be almost perfect.

Yep, totally understandable. I was a little worried too - until I took it apart and saw how simple it was.

RE: the holes - sometimes if one hole is off by a tad, it's easiest just to file/grind away the offending mounting flange opening a little to accommodate the screws. The screws cover to modification, so it still looks perfect once installed.....

Good luck with yours. I am loving mine!

Thanks for sharing. Although, not "high-tech" as yours, here is my humble setup :)

Looks like a good, solid mount. Nice.........

So how are the hoses holding up for you guys. Have they been revised since the terrible HF reviews on their site?

What's a good substitute other than the Goodyear ones? Will the Flexzilla work?

Yes, it will work fine. My son-in-law installed a Flexzilla on his HF reel.

Mine is not a commercial shop, so I am not using the hose every day. It is very flexible, which I like. I can't speak to the longevity of the hose, but the whole assembly is very sturdy and simplistic in design.

The ratcheting mechanism works perfectly and is easily adjusted to get more or less tension. The assembly itself is a snap to reconfigure for any sort of mounting location, to give you the most comfortable use and hose feeding/retracting. I give this thing two thumbs up.

Once again, thanks for your inputs.

Mind sharing how the tension adjustment is done? Is there a video somewhere or is it simply turning the reel without the hose actually winding?

One mounted to overhead I-beam in shop and the other mounted to two post lift. No tear down required. Make a cardboard template, drill the desired holes (anchors or bolts) mount reel. I used a ratcheting box wrench for the lower holes (closer to the reel).

To adjust the tension, you pull some hose out and then wrap it a loop at a time manually to add tension or unwrap a loop at a time to lessen the tension.
