It's to bad about the chunk broken off the slide. The jaws don't look bad from the picture but they are probably the fused on type so a hard fix if they are trashed. I sure it would still work just fine. The price is what ever your comfortable with. Good Luck !

I don't know why my phone turned this pic upside down, but this is the Samsonia No 38 with 5 1/4" jaws that was the bargain price of £20, its quite rusty but all works as it should, will have to get some hex head screws to hold the jaw inserts on but other than cleaning, polishing and paint it doesn't need alot doing.
Stuck Fretters attachment in to get a right way round pic.

Scimonetti: Personally, I wouldn't pay that much for any vise unless it was guaranteed that I could sell it at a profit. Sometimes a CL poster will get his asking price from the highest BIN price on eBay. More power to him if he gets close to his asking price. The CL market will determine if he sells it or if it's a crazy price.

Looks lovely! Any idea where 5.1/4 jaw inserts might be available from (anybody)? I'm having trouble finding any for a record (not sure if spacing and size would even be the same as this...)

You cant get new parts for this samsonia anyway, you either have to buy any insert that will fit and hope the holes are spaced right, find a broken vice to get them from or make them. I stick with what comes with and avoid buying anything missing inserts. If you watch ebay for long enough some may come up.

Dutch: That's a nice one. :) I've attached a rotated photo.

Jipps: You can make some inserts easily enough just from a length of bright bar. A chequered face isn't a necessity. It'll have plenty of grip without. You can buy new Irwin jaw inserts, but they'll not be cheap.

Thanks Fretters & CW.
It was well worth the 2 1/2 hour, 60 mile round trip to get it, I hate the roads in Dorset sometimes, you cant get anywhere quickly.

No intentions of buying it, just curious. I always thought Emmerts were the top dawg of patternmakers. We'll see how it sells!

Oliver's are nice but it's usually Emmert that gets the top billing. I think the emmerts were a bit more durable in casting strength/thickness then the Oliver's.

You could say it's a Ford/Chevy situation. Some people like Chevys, others like Fords. Either one will tell you why the other is better when, technically, they are the same thing serving the same purpose:beer:

I can tell you what I do for those posters on CL that use ebay to price items. I print off items I buy on ebay to show them what a given item actually sells for. I saved literally thousands using this tactic. I buy a lot on ebay but mostly "best offer". Being able to "barter " with the seller one on one is key but shipping is always a huge factor.

I'm in some trouble now.

I went to my first estate sale yesterday and came home with this 3.5" Columbian 403 1/2.

The jaws are in great shape.
FI%20P1080989.jpg

Although, I don't know if the smooth lower 'jaw' is original, as it prevents the fixed jaw from rotating fully.

With smooth lower 'jaw' removed.

TP: Price is all in what you think is fair and what you can convince the seller to sell it to you for. sometimes there just isn't a deal to be had unless you have to have it and don't care about resale or value.

with the missing chunk off the back slide i'm guessing it might have dropped and maybe with the 1000 pound barrel of concrete adding to the fall. so that is one issue that might not effect the use, but it certainly will keep the value down for resale. now when it is dropped and breaks off a piece of an old 100 year old vise there might also be some other cracks or worse it could have broken the vise nut.

first off before i drove 300 miles for a vise which I've done many more times than i can tell you I would get better pictures of the vise. he might not want to take it apart, but i would like to see the vise nut and underside of the dynamic and screw.

you've bought enough vises to know the value, but since it is a bigger vise you know they don't always come in perfect shape. it might have the static for one you'll find in the future with a dynamic that doesn't have any issues. i'd maybe pay $100 because you've got a half day drive and maybe $50-$75 in gas. hopefully you can get the vise off the stand for loading and the trip, but it would make a great outside vise if you do buy it.

good luck

Dutch: upside down and sideways pictures seem to happen more often when posting on cell phones and not sure why. did you post from a cell? some of the guys swear by Tapatalk, but i usually wait to get on my laptop to post mine. i was going to straighten it for you since i saved a picture of your vice, but Fretters already did that so i'll just say congrats on your find.

SC: that's some price tag for a wood vise. i don't know enough on them yet to say, but for me to pay that much for a vise it would have to weigh over 250 pounds and be in great shape.

ALL: it's rare that i am able to find a good vise on Craigslist any more with all the vise guys picking them up in my area, but i rescued this old Prentiss swivel jaw that weighs close to 120 pounds and paid $40. it might have some parts for another vise i already own because this one is missing the swivel pin and it has a crack on the top of the slide like most Prentiss vises do. it's a beast and i might spend the time and money to make it like new again and only time will tell.

Yeah I post from my phone, don't actually have a working computer currently so the phone is doing everything. I uploaded the pictures to my album here but it ends up upside down now matter which way I have it rotated on the phone, its doing weird things today. It's certainly a great vice for £20.

Drives, that Prentiss looks too good to part out. What is in the pin hole now, an old bolt? That slide doesn't look too bad, could either weld or braze it, or even just leave it, don't think it will affect the operation of the vise at all.

On a mission this week to rescue this dude. :bigun2:It's broke on the tail end of the slide but I still want it. It's "7" inches for pete's sake... Tell me what it's worth so I don't over pay. It's a 300 mile round trip. :3gears:They are asking 250.00 :spit:and I have to take the 55 gallon drum filled with concrete.

Offer the guy 200 and go get it. You do not see many of these out there.

Jim: i agree it is borderline, but when you have to choose between a few vises that have 50-75% of their pieces in good shape a couple have to become donor vises.

this Prentiss #21 might just stay, but it needs a swivel base pin which i think i have one on another Prentiss parts vise. then it needs the back slide brazed and i'm just now learning to weld so will probably have to pay to have that done. then it is missing the base bolt which might come from another donor or a bolts bin i have that is getting full of huge bolts. The swivel jaw pin might be original, but i doubt it or the swivel jaw have been moved in over 70 years, but at least i don't see it welded in place like i have with a few other swivel jaw vises. then i haven't checked close for welds and cracks under that awful grey paint job.

McB: very funny and not sure Prentiss vise company is totally to blame. if you ask your grand dad or great grand dad's out there if they hit on the back of a dynamic slide and used it like an anvil i bet almost 100% of them will say that they did at some time. of course there should have been a warning sticker put on that part of the vise.:D

That's what I'm think. It's a rare beast , especially here in the mid west. I have been dealing with this guy for two weeks now and hopefully I've established enough of a rapport that he will deal and under stand my position. Just can't look to hungry, but it's just gona look so cool sitting next to his little brother 326X Athol

BC: not a funny story about dealing with a terrible estate sales company owner especially if you got there a few hours before the sale started to get the #1 spot. XXXX that company off your list and tell all your friends unless that was just a worker for the owner then maybe call the owner and ask them to fire her.

on a different note i do have a 10 inch Wilton wood vise that you started a thread on, but mine is also missing that back plate. hopefully Todd's measurements will be enough if you want to make a plate for yourself or since i also took mine off a working man's bench maybe some work better without the stop piece.

BTW any new pictures of the museum or have some been going AWOL lately to other GJ member's homes like a few of mine have?

They're often called pattern makers vises and get used by stringed instrument repairers a lot. Not sure of brands but you can get cheap ones, so maybe the one on CL isn't a bargain.

EDIT: Here's one http://www.woodcraft.com/Product/142768/woodriver-patternmakers-or-gunstock-carving-vise.aspx

Price is OK, but nothing I'd jump though hoops to go get.

What is the purpose of this hole on this Wilton Shop Kings anvil?

I will admit I haven't looked on the Wilton site, nor any antique looking places.

It needs a good cleaning and paint.

No new pictures of the pile lately since I haven't been making frequent deposits. The pickings have been slim and I've had other things going on. Soon I'll be vise picking in Newfoundland so watch out Canada. I'm coming to take some weight off your soil:thumbup:

Cypher

Well Here it is when got it Took it Apart And Cleaned Up:

NCM_0093.jpg

It has 17 Stamped in two places on it ??

NCM_0105.jpg

NCM_0108.jpg

Jaws say "Max" on them presume that is the style ?

NCM_0112.jpg

This nut I presume based on what I can find here has to have the two tips pressed into the screw cut so it will come off ?

NCM_0106.jpg

How does this pin come out ?

I'm sure I've paid more and, if lucky, much less. Condition is everything but if it's what you want and don't mind spending the 100.00, go for it. Just remember, this vise is gonna cost you much more then 100.00 in the long run. Do you have a large garage? Heavy duty shelving?

Lol ,

One small single car garage attached is my main shop, welding shop and such is out in the 32'x32' Double car garage :} So yeah I have the room lol. Not so much a vise collector but, I will be looking later for a blacksmiths leg vice and that will most likely be the only other one I buy.

So after getting the Wilton C1 yesterday, I get up today not planning to go anywhere. I look at CL and see a garage sale five minutes away. Says mancave stuff. Starts at 9:00. So I get in the car at 9:05 and head over. It tuns out to be the whole house. So I head down to the basement and find the craftsman grinder and the Wilton 4" Cadet. I bring them up to get a price and the guy says $30.00 bucks for the grinder and $5.00 for the vise. OK thanks, bye. :bounce:

If it is like you say in decent shape, no cracks or welds, it can easily be the only vise you will ever need, and $100 sounds very good.

We'll see what else you get down the road, once you accept being in denial. :D
