And the architect wanted built-in bunkbeds for the grandkids, so we designed these with "storage steps".

Nice shop and nice work. I did not read all the posts, but did you run any bare wires inside the dust collection duct work to bleed off the static electricity?

Got up early this morning and found the comment you left on my thread and remembered that you work with wood and after fighting the wood work being done in my metal shop thought I might come over for some fresh ideas and catch up on your thread.

The wood work in those pictures of the house you were doing is unbelievable
Very nice and the library in the stair well is quite unique and outstanding

You mentioned that the folks up north are a bit private well if I were close I'd be by to share a soda and steal a tip or to on woodworking for sure.

Thanks for sharing your talents and friendship

Thanks Don. If we did live closer I'd probably be over to your place before you came to mine. Wish I could have helped out with your projects.

Well, there hasn't been much work in 2014, so nothing special to post. The lack of work has left me lazy and out of shape, to the point that I decided to get a physical. Turns out I have coronary artery disease and am scheduled for a quadruple bypass this Thursday. Probably won't be around the forums for a few weeks.

Will keep you in our thoughts.

A complex surgery, however, one that is commonplace and reduced risk with today's technology along with the great advancement in medicine. You will be back on your feet very soon and feeling better than ever!

While working for United States Surgical Corporation, had the opportunity to observe many "open heart" procedures while the team used the products that I represented from this company. Of course this was about 20 years ago and the technology then was fantastic, so today, the equipment and technical knowledge is far superior. You will be in good hands!

Wishing you and your family all the best!

Ody.

Toolfool, do you do all of your own finishing? I did not see a finishing area in your shop.

No, I have a local painting contractor who used to work for a large cabinet manufacturer do finishing for me. He has a great understanding of the stains and finishes available.

Just finished reading your entire thread. What you have done and shared is fantastic. I'm definitely not a woodworker, but can appreciate all your talents. Hope everything is going well after the surgery and thanks for sharing!

Thanks Don, and all of you who expressed concern. I am feeling better, getting a little stronger each day. Starting cardiac rehab program tomorrow. Still looking at more than a month before I can do anything substantial, and a couple of months before resuming real work. Went on youtube to see a video of an actual bypass surgery and can't believe I went through that !!
Don, I truly hope you're not next. I'll keep my fingers crossed for a clean report.

Thank you for your comments and well wishes guys. After dealing with a "constant rapid A-fib" problem that delayed my rehab exercise program, I am back working again. Doc says it could take a year to regain full strength and energy level. I work 4-5 hours and run out of gas, but that will improve with time. These forums have been a great distraction and motivator through my recovery process, and for that I thank you all. Hopefully, I'll have more of my projects to post here soon.

TF: i usually didn't get over to this side of GJ in the past because i used to call it the dark side. mainly because i see so many expensive things i'd like to own and buy so i stick with tools which is bit less expensive.

that said i did see where you had started to make a heckuva woodshop a while back and heard you were having health issues. it sounds like maybe you are on the mend so wishing you all the best and here's to a great 2015. i'll follow your progress and add things as i can if they might help or just watch and learn.

cheers

Thanks for checking into my thread guys. I am working again , finishing a 4000 sf house. lots of VG Fir trim, cherry cabinets, T&G ceiling. When the place gets a little further along, scaffolds removed, and cleaned up I'll take some pictures.
Nothing new in the shop, still trying to catch up with finances.
Rick, I'm no expert, just spent time researching to decide what was best for my needs.

Thanks for the positive comments guys. Good to see you here Zeke.

Well, I'm pretty much finished with the project I've been on for the past four months. One of the few I've ever been involved with that I wanted to pack up my tools and walk away. The GC and homeowners were fighting almost daily. I don't know if these people were OCD or Schizophrenic or both. All the interior trim was VG fir, and they would make us replace any board they didn't like. No knots, no pitch pockets, no odd grain. They would never even talk to the "help" , they'd pull the GC outside and yell and curse at him. They decided they were moving in this past Saturday, finished or not, so we worked long hours all week to get as much done as possible. I'm not sure I'm going back for the final punch list. Anyway, loading up some pictures. (Had to take quick pics, I thought they might object to me photographing their house)

Kitchen. Cherry cabinets, island is painted alder. Granite countertops.

More pics.

All the interior doors were 2-panel fir, oil-rubbed bronze hardware. Trim was VG fir.

The great room ceiling was clear hemlock T&G. Exposed glulams. One end of the room had this nice big window wall. The opposite end was the 3'6" x 8' solid oak entry door with sidelights. They decided it would be nice if they could have the window wall pattern replicated on the entry end. So we reframed the wall, ordered oak stock, and milled and built windows above the entry door. I think it came out pretty nice.

Then there's the fireplace wall built-ins. The homeowners brought me this big twisted, half rotted alder log to use as the mantel. I told them I couldn't mount it to the wall as is without using some kind of huge bolts. Oh no, no bolts !! So I took it back to the shop, squared it up, straightened it out, and did an oversized mortise and tenon connection using 4x4's bolted to the wall (should have taken pics of that).

I'm taking a couple of weeks off. Worked too hard too soon after surgery. I'm shot.

Beautiful craftsmanship, efficient shop. LOVE the look of VG fir.
Excellent work. Always loved the satisfaction of seeing the finished product, but also hated to work with some of the clients that paid the wage!
Rest well, you have clearly earned it.

Just read thru this thread, glad to hear you're on the mend. Take care of yourself, you don't want a repeat of what you just went through...

Where on the island are you? I look at the west side of Whidbey (Mutiny Bay) directly across the sound from my house in WA.

We used to be on the west side with a killer view out your way and sunsets. Decided a 10 acre parcel was more important. Needed space for a shop. We're right outside of Langley now. No water views, just our trees.
