Finally getting my woodshop together ...

Your shop is looking good. Designing proper DC hoods for my tools will be one of my next projects. How does that hood work for you ? I actually found a Powermatic air cleaner for sale today. I think I'm going to grab it. Hope it can handle the cubic feet of my space !
My FIL in Cleveland,OH does wooden cars and trucks. He does some really nice stuff. A few years ago I bought him a 23 ga. gun. He first told me he had all the tools he needs. He loves that gun !!

I built my double-mitersaw stand

Is the mitre stand in the center of the shop away from a wall?

Why did you choose to do that?

The mitre station is away from the wall. My mitre, my assembly table, and my table saws are in open space in the middle of the shop. They're the stations that are the busiest and it allows me to swing longer pieces around without hitting anything (also why I ran all my power,air and DC under the slab). I picked up the two 20' I-joists cheap (order overrun) and they came in handy from the framing stage of the shop to this point.

I picked up this Grizzly 24" drum sander off of craigslist a couple of weeks ago. It's got some hours on it, but for $500 it looked like a good deal. Hopefully I can refurb it enough to enjoy using it. Now I need to get the DC system !!

Yup, A drum sander is on the list, after sanding 6 cutting boards today enough is enough.

And yeah a dust collector is a must. I have a small shop and a small portable DC, but I tried running the 6x48 belt sander with out it, never ever again.

So I started to find some time to work on the DC system. Got the cyclone hooked up, wired, and connected to the 6" lines that were already in place under my slab. Connected the miter station, and table saw so far. Capped everything else off for now. MAN, does this thing **** !! Going to make working in the shop a whole lot more enjoyable. Also had a good weekend with craigslist. Friday night I picked up a Craftsman bench grinder for $85. It is in great shape and runs smooooth. Then Saturday I was able to grab a Milwaukee panel saw from a guy who was closing his business and retiring. He only used the saw occasionally to build shipping crates. I thought this was a steal at $400.

That panel saw is slick......you still sporting the old 1968-1969 Craftsman DP? From the 1969 catalog, and with an impressive 6" spindle travel:

Still have the drill press. The motor isn't original and is acting up. The whole machine could use an overhaul, it's been beaten up over the years. I've only had it since '97.

Thank you for the compliment. I have a few more tools to connect to the DC system, then re-organize, and clean up. Still hoping to find a bigger planer.

Any concern with static electricity build up with PVC tubing? The system that was installed in the other shop is primarilry PVC and took measures to ensure there would not be any issues. Probably overkill on my part, but, none the less, grounded the entire system to the cold water copper.

So far, Ody, no static problems. I'm wondering if the PVC under the slab is dissipating some of the charge. I was intending to ground all the pipe above ground after it's all installed. Probably just sink a ground rod through my slab right near the cyclone.
Had to build some bookcases today for the house I'm currently working on and the DC was a joy to have running.

Yes ! Been extremely busy trimming out a large house, but I picked up a 20" Grizzly planer and trying to get everything connected to the DC. I keep ordering more 6" PVC fittings and they keep disappearing ! I'll post some pics here soon. Thanks for the continued interest.

Ok, I was forced to make some progress by a job that needed to be done. I connected the DC to my new planer and my old Hitachi planer/jointer. Then I ran a DC line along the outside wall to connect to the lathe, band saw, 24" drum sander, and eventually to the far wall for the panel saw. Ran out of blast gates and/or caps to go further (have to stay operational). It's great to have the DC for the big planer !! Even from 36+' away, the clearvue ***** like crazy. Was able to build a cherry countertop for a built-in buffet for the house I'm working on. Here's a couple of pics of the DC and connections. Glad I had an 'Erector Set' as a kid.

I set up an account with H.D.Fowler Company( http://www.hdfowler.com/ContactUs.aspx ). They have multiple locations and deliver once a week for a small charge. Bought all my pipe and fittings from them. Usually 15-25% cheaper than the lumberyard or hardware store.

Thought I would check in tonight, and after looking at the pictures found
what I would call "a great mill shop." Now I'm going to go back and read up on your terrific wood working palace (your DC looks like some kind of monster coming out of your floor lol) Ive always been fascinated with wood work but after almost loosing two fingers in woodshop in jr High school I was moved into metal shop and that's where I stayed.

Thanks for stopping by my thread, Don. Glad I could return some of the entertainment I receive from following your projects. I also wish I were closer, it would be a blast to get to work on your man cave or ghost town. I don't get to do much "fun" stuff.

Maybe even bring a project over to work on together. Unfortunately, now that I have the shop, I've realized that PNW'ers don't "drop in" like I'm used to NY'ers doing. People out here seem to be more private and need a specific invitation. Oh well, I can share online.

Not that living on the second largest ISLAND in the lower 48 should have anything to do with it (lol), but even knowing Whidbey neighbors of similar interests doesn't necessarily mean that they'll feel free to 'just stop by'. I used to spend free weekends at Maxwelton Beach neighborhood there on Whidbey, and it always seemed to me that most of the locals were standoffish and with some you could almost hear the banjo playing somewhere on their property (ala 'Deliverance'). lol

Back East, there was still the spirit of 'neighbors' and 'neighborhood', where everyone knew everyone else's business, family, and friends; now that I think of it, the overwhelming number of neighborhood taverns, corner groceries, and small town factories might have had a lot to do with that atmosphere. Oh well, times change, people change, and sometimes it even turns out for the better!

The truck door is 12' x 10', and the smaller one is 12' x 9'. I wasn't concerned with making them match, I fit what I could under the gable truss, with enough shear wall to meet code.

The dust collection works great !! Still working out the best set-up on some things, like miter saws. I'm glad I spent the extra coin for a big system like this. It makes working in the shop so much cleaner and healthier. Thanks for the compliment.
