You're missing a lot of info on what your garage is like now, the width, length, how much storage area you need to be overhead, what you plan to store, & whether you have, or plan to have a lift. Other things that will help is to explain what you have currently for wall & celing treatment, like if you have drywall, a suspended ceiling, or if these areas are exposed.

A simple idea is to just get rafter hung shelving if your ceiling is unfinished, or put up a large shelf across the back wall that you can drive or walk under if the building isn't too wide.

I hung shelving from the rafters, using threaded rod. Some guys have used aircraft wire or chain. Saves floor space. Rear of shelves are attached to walls.

Here are some overhead shelves that I made up for my 14' walls. The pictures were not intended specifically for the shelves, I could take better ones tomorrow if you'd like. They are 2' X 8' in size, made from 2 x 4s, 1/2" plywood for top surface and lag bolted to the wall. They easily hold my body weight, 190#. I didn't like the idea of securing them to the trusses with wire or threaded rod, or just having something run through the ceiling in general. So mine are strictly attached to the walls. I even made one a "double decker". Good luck.

Here's some pics of mine. I was going to suspend it from above. But I thought i would get more sport with 4x6 posts. I kept them close to the other shelves to save space. I'm a terrible junk hound and pack rat so I need alot of storage. It's 4'x16'. It has worked out very well. I also have a 8' roll around ladder that I use to get the stuff up and down.

The beauty of suspending them from the rafters is having nothing underneath. The two examples above both have posts or 2x4's under. That room could be put to better use IMO. In my example, my shelves do not take up any floor space and can be adjusted if desired. As well, the threaded rod ends make a great spot to attach hooks, etc for hanging more stuff. I have also atached a pipe across them and hung several things for painting.

Sorry about the poor photo's - I tried to cut and expand the shelves out of other shots....

I think for E-tek's threaded rod, there is a hole drilled through the rafter(truss). Then a nut and washer are placed on the top side to secure the rod. I believe that's what I saw on one of his previous posts, but he could tell you for sure.
