Calling on all fellow GJ Vise members to help me identify this vise. I have no idea who made it or what the name or model is?

It belongs to a friend of mine and it's a beautiful little vise and he said that I'll have to pry it out of hands on his death bed before he gets rid of it. It's light duty but it's his all time favorite vise.

The pictures do not give it justice. The build quality and precision while using it is very noticeable.

The way the anvil was made and dovetails for the jaws is very nice.

I appreciate any help or info you can offer about this vise. I would love to try to find another one for myself.

Have you seen one of these vises before?

That one looks in good order and for free makes you very lucky. It looks like it hasn't seen much oil so I would start with degreasing, remove the rust and new oil, while doing that if it has a ding that stops it opening you can carefully file or grind it out.

Here's the finished Taskmaster. Final weight is 67.2 Lbs. It's a very nice working vise with action as smooth as any Bullet I've worked on.

Has anyone figured out why some of the Prentiss Bulldog 525/515 out of NY have a brass medallion in them ? I see it was mentioned in one post but no one said why. I have googled the hell out of it to no avail. One place e suggested it was made in the interim between owner ships and another said they was a hole behind it. Anyone with a real idea why??

Cyph: Here's one with the badge missing and another Prentiss bulldog with just cast #'s in the circle. i have no idea what the reasoning or purpose of the brass badge was unless the company just wanted to put a little bling on their vises.

PP: I'm not sure if you said your "free" vise is a Parkinson or Record, but it looks like a keeper. it also looks like it's fairly big and has the quick release option so pretty valuable. you've got a great friend and don't beat on it or use it as a press and you won't need another one.

Around my part of the country they can go from 5.00 to 45.00. Reed's bring the most. Greenfields next , Ridgid's are common . Like any thing size and condition matter. I'm not sure on the brand you have but it's clean and all original hardware so could draw top price

I gave $15 for it!! It's very clean! There aren't even tool marks on it and none of the jaws are damaged! I just think they're neat looking!

Neat they are. I use mine often. Any time I can get a good one for under twenty I grab it. The pipeliners I work with from time to time always want them .

DIF: The Vice PP has is a Record No 84, 4 1/2" jaws but it is one of the top of the range Record vices in the same category as the likes of the 112/114 and 34/35/36. The current incarnation of that vice is the T84-34 and is 550 quid .... so it's not a cheap vice :)

DIF: As an aside I received a 1930's version of that catalogue I posted the vice pages from the other day, it's got a few extra vices in than the 1953 catalogue including an interesting Parkinson that I'd not heard of before. I shall post the pages when I get time.

CW: thanks for the lesson on the English vices. also thanks for posting the catalog pages on the new Vise company thread i started in the Vintage tool section for pre 1970's vise companies. i'm probably going to break it down by letters on some of the posts i reserved and you and anybody else can either take a company or a letter and post information on company history and all their vise (vice) model #'s.

ALL: here's the fledgling thread that i pulled most of the vise companies off the vise repair 101 thread which as you can see has a few more than Dayid's. i like Dayid's format so anybody that can help him to collect more data would be great too.

I actually took apart my Wilton's to check the dates and updated my posts. My wilton CO is dated 6-30-64 guar exp and the 930 is stamped 9-47. I haven't figured out how to post multiple pictures yet. So here are the slide stamps. Sorry for the confusion

Nice job balane, I like your color choice. I wish the Taskmaster jaws were not so od ball size, none of the Wilton's jaws fit it. The screw holes are off set from the center and can not be rotated. You sure made this one shine. Where do you think this model is made, is it a Asian or USA built?

Bagged: do you have a piece of 3/8 or 1/2 inch plate? those feet should turn to make your vise work from both sides and if the bolts are running into the edge of your cabinet then just bold the vise to the plate and mount the plate as you can to avoid the cabinet. i hope that makes sense or maybe someone else can explain it better.

Make sense but I don't really want a plate hanging off that bench. I'm going to have another vise or 2 in the garage so I'm sure i'll survive.

That sure looks like a nice example bagged, I'd be upset too.

Busy at work today and didn't have time to browse craigslist until about 3 hours ago. Emailed the seller and it was too late. :(
I really want a Parker that has the November 22 patented date on it as that's my birthday. And Meriden, CT is my neighboring town.

I know this isn't a standard style vise but for some reason I draw to this style! I know they are "pipe vises" but that is all I know. Does anyone out there collect them? This is my second one I've purchased. The other one is about half this size. What kind of value would you put on it?

Bagged: with the thicker plate i was more thinking mounting the plate to the bench or cabinet to the corners, but you wouldn't have to put the bolts in the corners of your cabinet. then tapping a few holes once you get your vise set up to work great from both sides and mount the vise to the plate. if it won't work then as you say mount the vise to the cabinet and use it one way and use another vise for the other directions or get a stand.

GG: can you post those Wilton slides with the dates over on the Wilton bullet thread for date stamps with pictures of each vise? we are still collecting data and it's hard to go through 1000's of pages of this thread to get a few dates.

thanks and again nice collection for a new GJ member

That is impressive craftsmanship. Maybe a jewelers vise? What size is the jaw width?

Thanks Blue,

I believe it's 2 1/2" jaws and I agree it maybe a jewelers vise or maybe from the movie film camera business. There's no markings on the vise, I would love to find out who makes it?

Ok, new to the vise game and money at this point is tight. I'd like to call and make an offer, but curious if these are worth the money or if I'm about to get screwed. Emailed the fella and he has the pipe vise, price to be determined between the 2 of us - gotta be damn reasonable or at least on hold for payday.

I don't think I did the link correctly, but maybe.

Thanks guys for the save. I'm still on hold for his price on the pipe vise, but it has to be fair and cheap. Between what I have already, I can do the work I need but this would just make it a little easier.
So, what would the pipe vise be worth? From your reactions his pricing is way out of line.
Once again, thanks fellas.

No kidding, I wouldn't even bother contacting him. Go check this one out. Check it over for cracks or other issues. Looks like it was on some type of adjustable stand.

A 6" Reed is what you need!!!

(It was there---I just had to...didn't I???:beer::bounce:)

Just a thought---Isn't that a Reed Combination Vise, and isn't a 6" Reed Combo Vise called a Reed 4-C???

For a hundred bucks???

That beast should already be sitting in your garage!!!

Oh my - evidently I've hit a nerve with this fella. Accused me a being a spammer just tossing numbers. Needless to say - the columbia pipe vise isn't coming to my house.
Says his pricing is 20-30% lower than the internet - I'm simply not sure which sites he is using to compare.
Deleted the emails, I'm not putting this on my gotta have list.

Haha, people on Craigslist are crazy. They don't respond and get mad when you email multiple times. I like the people that leave a phone number as well as email.

By my math, 175 "ALL" is fair if no breaks or welds. My last 2 954 were 50.00 each and were like new. The reed is about the same. The Columbian is a 25.00 vise the other parker 50.00-80.00 depending on condition. But every one thinks there stuff is worth more than the next guy's so put the value of YOUR money on it. If money is hard to come by , pay less. If a quality old vise is harder to come by than money, pay more...

When I looked at his CL ad I thought it was a good deal until
I saw EACH. The parker combo would interest me but he doesn't show the model number so im assuming it's the 4" version. I would throw the offer of 100 just because I would want it. When I see a guy like that I wait about a week before emailing him with the "low ball" offer because chances are he didn't generate any traffic the first week because his prices are too high and after that he may come back to reality.

Damn, 2 more emails from this fella concerning the pipe vise. Now @ $20 for it - since I'm cashed out till payday he will have to wait. I've done spent my fun fund to nearly the zero amount and still trying to work a deal on one of the classified ads here that truly has my interest. I'm scrambling right now trying to find the extra cash for the classified and pay the fellow gj member what he wants. Doesn't look promising - *****.
No response on the pricing of the other vises, guess he is holding to those amounts.
Once again, thanks guys.

I usually buy vises with the goal of reselling them. If the seller wanted 175$ for all, I'd be tempted to drive there myself. If I were selling them as-is, reasonable retail asking prices in my area would be:

1.Parker combo=175$. Assuming it's complete. It's a top shelf vise. Good complete combo vises are hard to find. Hell, I'd probably buy it to restore & add to the collection.
2. Parker 974=75$. Top shelf vises, but too common.
3. Columbian=40$. Good home-shop vise, but too common.
4. Pipe vise=40$. Good vise, but it's a specialty vise. Hard to sell at a higher price.

Fortunately for you, Spring is here. Be patient. Good vise deals should start popping up.:D
