Like the title says, I have a few Hardinge speed chucks that are in need of a good cleaning.

I pulled apart a No.2-D6, gave it a wipe down with some solvent, regressed it and assembled it like normal. Now when the hand wheel is operated, it will bind slightly, or hit a rough spot that either takes more pressure to make a full rotation or just feel "rough" on each pass.

Sometimes I can get 8-9 full revolutions before hitting that spot and it's got me stumped. These are newly acquired so I never was able to check them before purchase and I'm wondering if it's a previous problem or due to my work on them.

Pictured is the D6 Chuck but the second photo is the insides of a 2A-D3 which is identical, just smaller

Here is the guts of the closer. It's very simple but I'm at a loss to figure out why it's getting stuck. Do these things bend or break in use often?

Could it be a lubrication problem? Is there a recommended lube for these things? Bearing grease, Teflon based, whale oil...?

BC, you'll probably have better luck over on Prac Machinist, somebody over there is bound to have had one of those apart.

You're probably right but I don't want to go create an account just to ask a single question. That's what I you guys for:beer:

I'll clean out the 2 smaller ones and then tackle the bigger one next week. If anybody is looking for a 2J collet closer, the smaller ones I have are for a monarch 10EE lathe.

I think I just figured it out. It seems these collet closers are very picky when it comes to timing and need to be reassembled with the factory provided witness marks on the gears. If not, they bind very easily, which is exactly what mine is doing!

I'll pull it apart tomorrow with new grease and get it working
