Saw an ad on Craigslist today about a wood workbench with vise for $40. Texted the seller, ended up being up the street from me. The workbench was poorly made, no biggie since I wanted to check out the vise. I see craftsman and USA on the vise and ask how much for the vise.

Craftsman 41/2 reversible jaw 51865 Vise with swivel bottom....Made in USA!

Anyone know what year this was made. Searched google but didnt find anything.

This will most likely go on 2 1/2 year olds workbench I will be building her in the next couple of months.

Who knows?
I'm talking to a local guy about that exact model.
Might have to see if I can get him to at least match the price you paid. Your's is in better shape though.

Your Daughter is lucky! 1st vise before she is three? Awesome!

Probably post 1973, at least I could not find that one in anything 73 or older...

Its either going to be this craftsman vise or a smaller Dunlap I picked up last month that will go on her workbench.

BTW- Uhh, Why DOES a 2 1/2 yo need a vise? I'm seeing stuck fingers till she rounds out the learning curb.

It's more of a "I want what Daddy has". I also want to teach her about tools at an early age.

My daughter is very cautious about everything so I don't see her getting her fingers stuck (fingers crossed)

Yeah the DuPont threw me for a loop! lol.

Ahh, now I see why she needs one. My little girl is the same way.
After seeing this I think I'm going to have to build my little girl one. I've got a spare little 4" I could put on there too, or an old Scout I have.

My vote is for the Dunlap. Do a resto on it. Get it good and pretty for her and mount it. Let her pick the color. It'd be a laugh to make it hot pink!

Good vise, the 4 1/2" Craftsman. That's the one I learned to use, coming up. I do believe Sears still has stock jaws at the moment... not the cheapest, but good and hard to stand up to abuse.

Have fun wid it!

I bought a very similar CM vice off of CL not too long ago for the same price (but in better condition). IMO, it's not that great of a vice and not worth more then I paid for it...

Super dead thread here but WTH, I'll dredge it up anyway.

I too am the happy owner off he craftsman 51865. I scored mine from a guy selling his dad's tools. He knew what it was worth, but kept seeing yuppies who were just looking to turn a profit.

He figgured out pretty quick that I wasn't looking to flip it or the other tools I bought, so he made me a screaming deal. 20 bucks for an older craftsman table saw and he threw the vise in for free!

Tried to pay him, but he wasn't having it. All he wanted was my word that I would put it to good use.

So happy Friday my fellow GJers and enjoy the thread from the depths of the GJ servers.

I had the same vise, brand new in the box, up until a few months ago. I believe it was made by Columbian in the 90's

Here's a picture of my 4-1/2" Craftsman along side my grandpa's Dunlap. My mom bought me the Craftsman in the early-to-mid 90's. Up until a few weeks ago it was my go-to vise. Never had any problems at all, except for having to straighten the "ram" a couple times in a press. I also have a 5-1/2" Columbian that is identical except for size.

Well Merc, if you lived out here in California you might be able to identify a little easier.

We have plenty of yuppies and hipsters out here. Mostly capitalists (which isn't necessarily a bad thing) and many are opportunists. They will flip anything they think someone else may pay double for, and in many cases they are right.

For example, there's a SnapOn taco wagon on the GJ a classified right now for 600. Out here, If one of the yuppie/hipsters bought it for 600 it would easily be flipped for 1500 to 2000.

In terms of why I was given the vise, It wasn't a matter of me being cool, it's a matter of him wanting his late dads tools put to work like his dad did. It's an honor in my perspective.

I feel the same way about my dads tools and my own as well.

Well, since somebody else dug up this 3 yr old thread, we want to know which vise did you go with, and how is your daughter doing with it?

That one looks new, but made in USA makes me think otherwise. Any experts looking at this thread?
Not sure how "new" you mean, but it's got some rust spots on the part that slides back and forth. Hard to find rust on tools in AZ but it does happen. So, not 1 or 2 YO old "new".

Bought it at a yard sale; guy had a lot of woodworking tools that looked 30-40-50 YO. Perhaps he was a collector.

Did a somewhat thorough web search and found nothing as to its' age.

Surface rust can happen fast under the right circumstances. I said looks new because it has what looks like factory paint that is undamaged so it looks like new but I am in the dark as far as date of manufacture. It doesn’t look at all like the USA craftsman vises made in the 1960’s by Columbian.

I have the same vice mounted to my bench

Bought it new in the early to mid nineties I believe

Broke one of the jaws once banging on something. Sears replaced the jaws for free. Now that I think about it I think they gave me a whole new vice.

I made a set of nylon jaws to hold motorcycle forks for fork servicing.

Good Luck
