Best I can tell is the small symbol that looks like an I over an M would be the Illinois Malleable Iron Co. But I can't see the symbol real clear. Could also be an I over an H.... International Harvester. Can you get a better pic of the symbol?

I think I may be falling victim to the "old iron bug". Everyday since my original post I keep lurking this thread. As some may have already read I have my eyes on a 4" Chicago Wilton here locally along with an Oswego. I can't find any information in regards to the Oswego company. The guy has both for sale and would do a package deal but I don't think I need them both unless I find the Oswego is rare, interesting, desirable, etc. Please share any links to additional info, age identifying features, etc. Thanks!

Look on the Screw Box, (the bell shaped piece at the rear), for maker ID.
Most are not marked but this looks like it could be Peter Wright.
It will be pretty faint so clean carefully.

That unknown one almost looks russian/combloc to me. Just the overall shape and such. I'm probably wrong, it just looks like things I have seen made there.

XCM: i'm not sure when Oswego quit making vises, but maybe around the start of WWII. that said they are some of the best made vises of their day and i like them better than Wiltons even though Wiltons tend to sell for more money. if you like old steel that is the one to buy and put it on your work bench.

some day maybe in the not to far off future those old well made vises will be in demand just as Wiltons are today and you can have one on your bench. what did the seller tell you as a price for both vises and can you post up pictures again if you respond with an answer? i think i mentioned if you could get them both for $150 that you should buy them if you have the funds.

It is an I over M symbol but it's not Illinois malleable. It's not Russian either. I know what it is just seeing if any one here knows it.

XCMTB83, concerning the Qswego, all I can tell you is they were made in upstate NY and were considered good vises. I know Outlaw for sure knows something about them, a few others also. Pretty sure VA may have posted one once that he had, and if I am wrong about him having one, he would also be one that has some info on them.

That is a Keystone vise made by Hollands. Somewhere on here I posted the wholw hollands catalog i have and it shows this model. Can't find the catalog right now!

JuneBuggy posted a nice clean one a couple of weeks ago, which BigCaddy correctly identified it as being a Hollands

Can anyone tell me a little about this York vise. It's not marked country of manufacture so I'm thinking over seas?

XCMTB83.---I've got a couple of Sawyer/Oswego vises on page 1000,---post 19981.---I know Drivesit has a six incher and several others on here have some.---It appears that some of them just have the Oswego logo, and some are Sawyer/Oswego's.---Not sure which is the oldest, but most have the trademark big T in a circle.---Oswego also made the NuType rotating head vise,---

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=260966.

As far as rare goes, don't know how many of the various sizes were made but they don't come up for sale very often, but are well made vises.---Looks has nothing to do with performance but I think they are some of the more stylish looking vises.

B100 probably has a chart or two on them.

Both of those are nice vises you are looking at.---I'm like Drive, if you can get them reasonable, buy them both.

Czech. If you look on the top of the jaws, (can't remember whether it's on the front or back jaw), you'll find Czechoslovakia stamped lightly into the jaw top, just behind the insert. Good vices. That one dates from around the 1954 to 1972 period. What size is cast on the other side? I'm guessing it's between 60 to 100?

REED SPLIT-NUT INFO NEEDED!!

Sorry for not posting this in the Vise Repair 101 thread but not sure as many of you see that one. When restoring my Reed 104.5 with split nut collar, I misplaced both the: (a) split-collar set screw; and, (b) the backlash adjuster screw that goes thru the nut holder pin.

Can anyone please please please help with sizing of one/both? I don't have the proper tools here to measure and would like to avoid taking the dynamic slide with me to a big box store. I believe they are going to be the same size on any model Reed, so info from a 104.5 isn't necessary.

Thanks in advance!

Hey guys

found a nice 5" vise on Craigslist for $50

Took a wire wheel to it and cleaned her up a bit. New paint and now waiting to be mounted.

Tell me what you think.

Nice work, Soon2Adjust! I really like how you kept the slide bare and also the detailed lettering. What paint brand/color did you use?

Make your mind up lad. Is it from Poland or Czechoslovakia? They are not a long way apart but NOT the same country. :dunno:

My first large Wilton Vise

This week, I won an auction bid on a Wilton C1, 4-1/2" swivel combination vise.
At first, I only bid $40, via the online site, then after going down to the auction place and previewing things, I upped my bid to a maximum of $98.
I was cruising along with a bid of $65 winning right up until the last minute, when someone slid in with a bid of $95.50, which triggered my max bid of $98, so I ended up paying that much for it.

It was crusty looking, but it is basically all stuck on grunge, kind of like asphalt/sand or some similar accumulation.

i-xbbKcpf-M.jpg

The replaceable jaws are pretty chewed up, but the physical jaws themselves, as well as the screw, nut, swivel base, etc. are in pretty good condition.
i-T8Zv7B5-M.jpg

I took it apart today:
i-9NGtxj7-M.jpg

And from the slide guide numbers, it looks like an August, 1978 vise.
i-gX3ggXP-M.jpg

I cleaned up all the parts in the parts washer, and bead blasted the swivel base and end cone parts:
i-dV4TWQX-M.jpg

And I started trying to get the jaws off.
So far, I have managed to remove one of the removeable jaw screws, and am beating on, heating, and soaking the other three:
i-fXwvkp8-M.jpg

i-7rJ9K2w-M.jpg

Hopefully, I'll get the other three out without too much voodoo or collateral damage, and then I can prep the vise body and dynamic jaw for painting, while I order some new jaw inserts for it.

Oh, and does someone here know how to get the pipe jaws out?
Maybe when I bead blast the big parts, a pin will be obvious, but right now, I don't see anything.

Picked up this fella today. I would believe it weighs every bit of that 165lbs list weight.

Could have sworn I took a picture with a Coors sitting on it, guess I drank it before I took the picture. :dunno:

Yes, it does a good job of filling up that truck bed.

Thanks

This was my first time doing a vise

I used Ace Hardware Rust Stop spray paint. 3-4 coats of safety red and black. Used a sharpie for the lettering.

Good score, looking for a C1 myself to finish my "C" collection. As far as the pipe jaws, I think some used a spring steel clip on them to snap them in. If you don't see anything on the sides, might do a little gentle test pry with a screwdriver to see if that's the case.

I got this Wilton clamp-on baby bullet for my new light-duty "machining" bench behind my Bridgeport. I didn't want a permanently mounted vise or anything heavy. All I really need is a third hand for small parts and to hold collet blocks.

This is the first time I've handled a baby bullet, they're really nicer than I was expecting. Surprisingly heavy duty for the size! An excellent choice for renters or people who need a mobile vise.

The handle was bent but I happened to have some stainless 3/8" bearing shaft so I made up a new one by tapping the ends for screws

WiltonBaby_zps40dsaaos.jpg

I paid $48 used but I noticed these would have been about $80 and still free ship during the last Zoro 30% sale.

Suppose A_Pmech or KMScott or someone has tooled up and begun making replacement pipe jaws for Shop Kings? To be authentic, of course, they'd need to be cast iron, not machined. Missing a pair on my 3 1/2", just wondering. I got it cheap at an estate sale, and had to talk them into selling it without the POS workbench it was bolted to. Fortunately, the bench was Craftsman and therefor far more valuable than the vise.:lol_hitti

I could kick myself for not spending a few minutes searching for the jaws, but wanted to git while the gittin' was good.
They're so frequently lost you'd think there would be plenty just lying around.:dunno:

Anyone have some spares, let me know.

Gentlemen,

I've searched and find nothing on this vise by Wilton. Seller on local C/L says it has 6 1/2" jaws but the model number shows 655. Seller wants $85.00.
