My old man ended his career as the Assistant Director of NCIS and I spent my entire childhood growing up in other countries as a NIS/NCIS/Army brat. I can tell you with close to 100 percent certainty that everything you see on that show is NOT how NCIS works. For starters, they'd never let a Goth through the front door at an interview screen, no matter how hot she was. Their evidence kits are the same ones used by the FBI and everything's purchased under the "Buy America" program, even if it means the tape measure costs $150.

You mean there's no Abby? And no hot Mossad Liason Officers floating around Washington?

I kid, I kid, obviously it's nothing like real life. Sitting in an office 9 days out of 10 wouldn't make for very good TV.

So sick of cheap bastards here celebrating their purchase of Chinese goods like they discovered a gold mine. USG uses US stuff. U.S. marines use proto. Air Force and navy use snap on, measuring tools are starrett. even defense contractors use all US made stuff. No government agency shops at HF.

They use the lowest bidder. Lately has been Armstrong. Most stuff they get is USA anways. But yes, I doubt NCIS has hf stuff.

OutsideMachinist is right. The good ol' guddament buys the lowest priced American made tools. Used to be proto cause that's what all our old shop tools are, and all the new shop tools are Armstrong. There's a book I have at home that explains why some stuff the government buys is so expensive and part of it was they try to buy American made tools and parts.

I've been in the Army for 13 years, and realize that the USG uses American made products and brands. Armstrong is the current issue, Snap-On fills the older contact maintenance trucks, and plenty of Proto stuff is still around. Granted, I'm just a dumb grunt who doesn't get cool tools to play with, but I've seen a toolbox or two. I swear I've seen a couple of Toyota GOVs, but the vast majority are GM, Ford, or Dodge. America's military/government using American goods? Makes sense. It used to drive me crazy seeing Made in China printed on the giveaways we had in recruiting.

Yall have Yota GOVs? I've never seen anything outside the big three on any US installation. All our shop trucks are Ford gassers, all trucks we use for towing are Ford F-350 4WD SRW diesels and Chevy/GMC 3500 4WD SRW diesels. Even the little trucks we use are Dodge Dakotas.

It's a television show, and meant to be entertaining for everyone.

Admittedly, it's a spin-off of JAG, which is a bit more realistic, but NCIS was never meant to be super-accurate. It was meant to be popular.

The military is boring. Everything is old, interior design is rubbish, and fun is not the same sort of fun you have everywhere else. The reality of actual day to day life would make a terrible television show.

People want to watch fun stuff. They don't want to watch that nonsense.

They get a lot of obvious civilian stuff right, though. McGee uses a gaming keyboard, befitting his geek nature, and they stay on top of what's popular.

If you want the exact opposite; a show that's highly fantastical, and yet shockingly realistic when it matters, try the new Hawaii Five-O.

I've never found a thing to complain about in there.

I like "Abby". Met her in person once on my airplane. LAX to Chicago. She looks very different from the goth get up on the show. Its a TV show folks, and much better entertainment than the current crop of reality B.S. Best idea, stay off the internet and TV and spend that time in the workshop.

The new one is about as accurate as the old one. Since there is no real "state" police then I guess they are as real as a nonexistent agency.

On these shows, I like how anybody, even know terrorists can just walk up to the desk in any of these shows. You use to decades ago but not since the towers came down.

I use to use a government credit card in the Air Force for local purchases. We were supposed to only buy USA and "friendly nations". No China, Vietnam, North Korea and others.

Also had an account with the Snap On guy. Spent over a 1/4 million dollars updating our tools over a few years, mostly to Snap On.

SF guys I worked with had toyota pick ups in AFG that far outlasted the F150. Carried them around in chinooks. But those purchases were made thru different channels than std procurement.

I don't recall if every USG tool had an NSN. No question Snap On, and proto supply tools to USG. I guess it's possible HF tools could show up somewhere just like those toyota pickups.

A lot of those toyota pickups used by the terrorists were US purchase. So they are on some approved list somewhere.

Not sure where you get that information. I know in philly, near where I am from, stolen cars don't get chopped, they roll into containers and get shipped to Africa. if US spec vehicles are turning up in theater, that might be how.

The US bought a bunch of trucks for our then allies. But in the Middle East, Todays friends are tomorrow enemies. I taught members of the Iranian Military that were going through US military schools. I'd be willing to bet they now head their own terrorist cell.

Does anybody know if that Texan plumber is still rolling around the sand with his gun mounted in the bed of his ford pickup?

This is why I can't stand the show. :dunno:

But she wasn't goth until she got the job. She has had to dye her hair dark

questionable choices don't keep you with high level security clearance very long....

if you have friends that make extremely poor choices and you hang around them you can lose clearance

Back when JAG was on the air, I applied for the navy's OCS program. The recruiter I met with wanted to tell me a bit about what to expect with navy life. I kiddingly said, "I know what to expect. I've seen JAG on tv." The recruiter audibly groaned, looked down and rubbed his temples. When I assured him I was kidding, he just shook his head.

Apparently, he had no sense of humor.

And you think tech have super secret clearance? Good laugh. And I have seen what government from local to federal workers wear and a lot of time it is lacking by some standards.

Abbey is probably a bit over the top but I bet someone with her skills would have a lot of leadway as she could go elsewhere and earn multiple times the GS grade she would be in.

The ones I've seen were hybrids, had to do a search to make sure I wasn't dreaming and found this: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/artic...een-fleet-shows-ford-loses-to-hyundai-hybrids

Everything else is still Ford, GM, or Chrysler. Our MPs complement their Impalas with Colorados.

I miss JAG, but an old squad leader got me hooked on NCIS ten years ago. The LA and NOLA versions are decent as well (IMO) but I don't watch those shows for the stunning realism. The original show is on its third female lead and doesn't hesitate to kill off series regulars, which I like. Mark Harmon is great as Gibbs, and a far cry from one of his early roles as a rookie cop on Adam-12. Haven't seen Gibbs lose his gun yet. :)

Used to PT on the Navy Yard once or twice a week and never saw NCIS rolling out to a big crime scene. The life of most federal Special Agents seems boring at best--had a Soldier who dated an attractive DCIS SA who spent hours at the gym each day.
