options for disassembling sk ratchet with broken retaining ring

i have an old 40970 ratchet which does not work... the mechanism is seized and the multiple days of soaking in atf is doing nothing

the real problem though is the fact that both ends of the retaining ring are broken off... anyone know of a way to get this apart?

You can technically (and I mean "technically") get it off with picks. But...I would heat it then use penetrating oil then try getting a feeler gauge (or any slim piece of metal) under one of the sides and lift it up enough to use needlenose to remove it. Might need a second set of hands to do it/hold down the other side while you attempt it.

You could send it back to them but they might deny a warranty issue because that implies you dissassembled the ratchet before (which can void a warranty). You could ask them but if it's a junker/non warranty try the above.

I got mine off the same way ^. One hard jerk and it was out. I used needle nose vise grips.

I have had to remove snap rings from a hub to get out the rear wheel bearing on a Peugeot that didn't have anything to grab onto (ploy by the manufacturers to make you buy a new hub..)

I used a sharp center punch on the center of the the snap ring, which had the effect of shocking it free and forcing the ends out of the slot so i could pry them out, would have to be careful not to damage the slot although you could turn the snap-ring the other way if you do.

Considering SK sends out kits under warranty for anyone to fix their own ratchets, it would seem quite silly to me if they would void the warranty for disassembling the ratchet. However, it is a bit of a gray area since the warranty usually just involves a replacement mechanism kit. I wouldn't be surprised if they'd swap the whole thing in a case like this, but I am curious.

i wouldn't want to warranty... this is a diamond logo ratchet... i have the same model in a newer production ratchet that i actually use

even though i have essentially no intention of using this ratchet i prefer it to be in working order
