Going to add another couple of lights in my garage. Father has been eyeing the LED 4' versions at Sam's club and Costco and says that is the way to go. Seems they are brighter, no buzz, run cooler and live longer.

Anyone have experience with these? based on the lumens they look to be a bit brighter but is this the best way to go or is there another? I am planning to add an additional 4' and one 8' in my garage that currently has 3 4' t12 CFL fixtures.

Thanks all.

I just R&R a 48" 4lamp T-8 fixture with two 15 watt 4K led 120v replacements. Not equal to the 4 x T-8 lamps. I think we'll try two 22 watt and 4K or higher next.
The Sams club fixture looks like a good gamble , depends on ceiling height too.

New LED LAMP ---- Comparison two LED"s to 4 T-8(old) --- Fixture w/4 new T-8 cool white lmps.

I went to Sam's and looked at theirs. There's no way they put out the light they claim.

My ceilings are 10.5' high. All of the lights are on one wall switch.

That is my concern, the output claims seem high. I wounder if i would just be better off adding the two new ones in T8 or T5 and then just work on upgrading the others. It does seem, from what i have read those both out perform the T12s.

I concur with this statement. I thought they looked decent but dont think they put out nearly the light from my LED shop lights from Lowes.

I just looked at all the lights in my garage, installed by the builder 7 years ago, are T12 fixtures with T8 bulbs. Hmmm. I read online where it says 8s will work in 12s but burn out quickly. In the last 7 years i have only replaced 2 of the 8 bulbs.

I have 12 CFL's in my garage (on 4 switches) and supposedly each one is equal to a 100 watt incandescent bulb. I think they draw something like 34 watts per unit. I am quite happy with them. On occasion I have entertained the notion of replacing them with LED lights, but the CFL's are working so well I just can't see replacing them, at least not at this time. I have not had a bad CFL in the garage since I built it well over 3 years ago.

Thanks LS6, they seem to get mixed reviews. It looks like as more and more of the T12s and eventually T8s go away they direct replacement LED tubes will become more readily available and the price will come down. There are already lots of retro kits out that only require the bulbs, new tumbstones and you pull your balast. Seems like an easy conversion, down the road. I think for now i will just get some T8 fixtures and retro in several years when these bulbs die and are more cost affectively replaced with LEDs.

Rookie - Where'd you score those bulbs?
