Holy smokes that's an amazing vise. At or near the top of any vise list in my opinion. Those just ooze quality. Congratulations. If your 6 1/2" Wilton is a Tradesman, which I assume it is because I've never seen a machinist vise in that size, then the Starrett is an easy keeper. No brainer there unless you absolutely need that extra 1.5" jaw width for something. I LOVE that Starrett!!

I'd take an Athol over a Wilton any day but that's just me. That is a damn good vise.

can you provide more details about both the Starrett and the Wilton? they are both great vise companies and that Starrett is one of the vises made. Wilton has several levels of quality and style, but usually all are good enough for most.
what is the jaw width and weight of your Starrett and more pictures of all sides would give us more information as well as several pictures of the Wilton.

Beautiful vise and huge suckage at that price.
Anyone else notice the gap behind the top and bottom steps of the jaws? I've never owned one of those Starrett badged Athols, but most jaws would fit flush.
Would be interesting to remove one jaw just to see how the back of the jaw looks and how the face of the body compares.

TT: you'll never be able to match that blue fleck Starrett paint and there is enough of it that i'd just clean it up and put some BLO (boiled linseed oil) or Johnson paste wax on it and the bare steel parts. here's an almost never used rusty Starrett before and after pictures if you might want to spiff yours up more than just a little.
once you post your Wilton I (we) might have some advice to lend you and some of those old Wilton tradesman vises were made for Snap on, John Deere and other big companies so a red paint job with a label might be the answer if you want to keep or sell it. does it look like this 6 inch Wilton tradesmans that were made for Snap On?

Starrett is a premium brand manufacturer of measurement tools in the ten thousandth of an inch range. Very high quality.
I didn't know they made vises as well. I'd expect it to be as high quality as their other wares. You better watch out for the cops, cause for $50 you STOLE IT!

It's valuable. That's a top end vise desired by many plus the fact not a lot of them come up for sale. You did very well on it and the price offered by Murphy is a fair one imho.
Unless he is shipping it a long distance for that price, you are a damn fool.

Did you try swapping the jaws to see if they fit better? Perhaps someone took them off and got them mixed up when they were reinstalled.

A used Starrett 926 is $ 750.00...

Your vise is a serious clamper, and 4 1/2" Starretts routinely change hands in the $ 4-500.00 range...
I have a Starrett 925 begging for this "old fart" to get off his duff and finish it's restoration...
Reverend Kevin Scott and I have reached a conclusion the "Zolotone" MAY be the paint required to match the original...But---It ain't cheap!!!
