an old US made bench grinder that states 1hp and 8 amps...might be worth checking out...if it actually gives those numbers

First off, it's not 1 HP and 8 amps. The owner miss-read the label. Looks like it says 1/3 HP. Probably more like 4.8 Amps as well, not 8.

It's got a zip code so 1963 or later.

Cummins was purchased by John Oster Manufacturing Co in 1954.
John Oster was acquired by Sunbeam in 1960.

They mostly made hand held power tools.

I found some earlier catalogs but none with a bench grinder.

dont know if its anything, but there are scrape marks around the label. Label also looks a little too good for being on the front of a grinder for shop use. Still an interesting looking grinder.

Think there's been similar grinder like that on GJ before.

Unusual design but not worth $75 in my eyes.

That really doesn't look like plastic.
Aluminum most likely.

Probably right about not being 1hp though. 1/3 does sound a lot more reasonable for a 6" grinder.
Keep in mind old American made motors weren't so hilariously overrated like cheap Chinese ones though.
My 6" grinder is a real 1/3hp, and it's never lacked for power.

I remember seeing these in pawn shops in the 80s, not sure if they were worth a damn but they were well used and beat to hell.

Looks like a plastic housing, stamped tin tool rests. and it is NOT 1 HP. It is USA made, but I'm still going to stick to my original assessment.
Jim

if it's 40 years old, still runs smooth and runs at it's actual power ratings (whatever those may be) it's definitely not bottom of the barrel hf ****.

How many bench grinders that hf sells today will be run hard for 40 years and still going?

jmho but I've never seen an old US grinder that didn't smoke every hf unit i've ever seen. just my exp though.

I have my Dad's old cummins from the early 70's.

I use it almost every day.

Runs true and smooth.

I think I may have gotten the only one that does.

I had a similar designed one I got with a bunch of other stuff. The bearings were bad so I took it apart. It had babbitt bearings, no ****. Mine was a euro brand though, not cummins but had a very similar looking casting.

Looks like it has been painted over at some point and someone has scrapped the paint off, probably to see what it said.

I see them come up for sale from time to time, and I sometimes see them in garages when I go tool hunting. Last time one came up for sale the women wanted $150.00 dollars which of course was $125.00 to much. I sent her an e-mail and told her she should drop her price; after some time she dropped the price not sure if she ever sold it but the ad was gone after six weeks.
