bagged, I like the lamp and it's vintage base. It reminds me of the 1 on my Dad's electronics workbench back in the '50s & '60s.

So, I'd go with saving it with the base and use it intact. I'm in the 'strip, and paint it' crowd. But, I do like patina and 'rat-rod' look. Either way it's like:

Yeah I'm indifferent between patina and paint and finish. If I put it on the grinder it would definitely be painted. But I'm thinking the shade needs to be 3/4 of its size max to look proportional with the grinder. I will wire up the light bulb socket then test it.

I paid $23 shipped for the lamp and it is cool enough to wire wheel and keep intact.

ALL: so i offered up the parts from my 1/3 block and they are finding their way to a new home eventually as part of gift blocks for TM's nephew's. i can now tell Mrs. Drivesitfar that I sold some tools, but she is still in a little shock from seeing some of the steel I've been accumulating that she accidently caught a glimpse of at my shop.

i'm hoping to have some fun learning to weld.

Happy Easter weekend everybody

A big thank you drives!

After the holiday week-end, I'm going to continue with rebuilding Huey, Dewey, and Louie's 1/3-HP rtop Blocks. Your parts will be welcome enhancements to the group of 3! Pictures to follow.

Found this Thursday.

00b0b_e4eOdOyvoo0_600x450.jpg

Friday he calls me and crawfishes, says he 's decided to keep the 1/3hp, but he's got another "block" to sell. I make him an offer he doesn't like and says he'll CL it. Talk to him last night and because of no interest he says he'll take my offer, so I'll be picking this one up later this morning. Guess it worked out ok in the end.

So you are getting the one with the stand? What are the specs?

What do you think? Yes or no? Too big?

Once it's painted to match the grinder, it'll look awesome.

Nice. How much are you getting it for. I need to find a 3/4 or 1hp and sell my 1/3hp.

~Veeps

I ended up paying $175, but I had to drive all the way to Orygun to pick it up. I'll have 2 or 3 smaller hp ones to get rid of once I get home and inventory.

That's funny I didn't even notice the clamp. Guess I need to get my eyes checked. I was just looking at lamp and grinder. I personally don't think its to big. I think people comparing it to orginal may think it's to big but the curves on it make it period correct and if yiu didn't know it i think it would look original.

Nice job on 3/4hp round top with a stand. That's a rare one - plastic sticker with metal eye shields. The price is right at that point where you have to think twice, but I bet you would have kicked yourself if you had let it go.

Here's what I've aquired recently.

Pre block. This one is not fitted for outside wheel guards. One metal eye shield is a little bent up. But other wise all there.

1/3 hp round top. All there one metal eye shield very bent.

1/2 hp flat top. I bought the quench try seperate found it on eBay on accident. Seems to match up best with the flat top. Outside wheel guards laying next to it. Missing eye shields and one spark "blocker" thing.

And a stand

One of there will get a gulf racing team color scheme to match my FFR Daytona. Pre block think will copy the brown and copper color scheme seen in this thread. And not sure what plans are for third.

Nice gaggle of grinders!
Funny to see 2 bases with quench trays and no rods w/ tool rests.

McB: are you predicting next year's Super Bowl teams this far in the future? it could happen. i watched Draft day with Kevin Costner and he thinks the Browns have a winning team on the horizon. I guess we have proof to go back to in 9 months and say you were the first on to predict it.

McB: i just noticed the fine print so had to save the picture and blow it up to see that it is a 65 year old program. so you pulled out the prediction that we play in next year's Super Bowl as a repeat of a game when our team was in Miami? never knew the dolphins were seahawks in 1949 and i used to know my old football facts. or is that a fact?

ALL: now i need to go pull some blocks out and try to get them and some of their pieces shipped. BTW did any of you see Joe Striper's post on the vise thread about Fed Ex? i know TM likes fed ex and anybody else have a favorite and a good way to ship a block?

We have 2 long snappers on the roster, a 38 year-old career backup quarterback, our first round QB draft pick is in rehab, our star receiver is suspended, etc, etc, etc...

McB: those are minor details that a little money and a few good trades can fix. i can't remember when our QB who isn't that big went in the draft a few years ago, but i seem to recall 7th round and he's a keeper. i sort of gave up on our team about 10 years ago because the players were always whining, making too much money and not winning. they are fun to watch now even if they don't always finish a game the way we like. maybe you can move here since we have better weather and or adopt our team?

good luck

ALL: any favorite shippers of these blocks to mention or a picture of some recent packed ones?

Browns all he way. I've told McB this already, but I actully have an original copy of that 65 year old program. One of my prized Browns items. So I'm a stupid crazed Browns fan.

SS: so Miami Seahawks was a real team? did they change their name to the Dolphins and what year? i know our Seattle Seahawks was an expansion team in 1976 so not a team moved around the country like some of them have been.

ALL: sorry to get off the subject of block grinders so anybody use their block today either on a project or to shine up a used block they just bought?

Jake: it's good to be lucky. how's the snow in hell been since your team sold it's soul for that last play? Sunny weather here the last 3 months and temps in the 60's.

Alright Drives. You had to ask and it sent me on this ridiculous exercise. I did use the 3/4hp BlockMeister today and found out how aggressive an 8" wire wheel can be on brass. It is a fine, almost soft, stainless steel wheel, but wow. I switched over to a 2" brass wheel on my old home-made 1725 rpm buffer and it was much better. Here is some math that explains why with a surprising discovery:

View media item 49838
So, you can see the significant drop in surface feet per minute from 7226 to 903. More importantly, you can see that if you had a long enough extension cord, a Block grinder with 8" wheels would tear it up on the highway. :3gears:
Boy, I hope I got the math right. No beating up for rounding errors, please. :D

Dolphins have no ties to the Miami seahawks. That team went belly up.
The importance of that program is its was the first ever regular season Browns game. And they did win the championship game that year.

Now back to grinder news. :)

McB: i'll let Ex or TM or one of the other engineers or math geniuses figure out that chart of yours which looks pretty good. i can tell you i'm not surprised the brass was not holding up to wire wheeling with any type of wire. Might i suggest you getting a deburring wheel and giving that a try on your brass or stainless or anything you want to shine up.

SS: thanks for clarifying your Brown's program for me and others reading this thread. first season and won the championship game is a hard act to follow. very nice. I remember watching Jim Brown run over the top of people in his days as the best running back in football probably in the mid 60's and wishing he hadn't retired so early. here's to the Browns for you Ohio Block guys.

Jake: you got the last word again and thanks for changing the D's to something i can understand.
