Tools haul from local auction with lotsa pics (Proto ****)

I don’t post much but went to a local auction this morning and even though it was well advertised (postcards, email, signs, etc) only about a dozen people showed up. I felt like I hit the jackpot to an extent. This is the first time I've ever really come across a load of tools like this so I wanted to share in my joy. Especially with the 2 brand new vintage Proto wrench sets. A few pics of my haul are below.

A few of the goodies in no particular order (some things were in lots)…

Brand new Proto 500 Limited Edition wrench sets in their original leather rolls. 1 each of standard (16 pieces) and metric (15 pieces). Apparently these leather wrapped sets were only sold for a very short time for around $600 per set. The outside leather is a little discolored from age and storage but it is still buttery soft. Some of the plastic wrappers are disintegrating a little and one set even had a small paper inside from Proto congratulating the buyer on their purchase. As gorgeous as these are I might be willing to sell them for the right price. These limited edition sets rarely come up for sale as complete and when they do they sell quick and I've never seen a NOS set come up in my own memory, particularly both standard and metric. Usually a standard set which even in well used condition sells for over $300.

Few assorted Armstrong Armalloy and Williams Superwrenches
Columbian 7CD vice
CR Danielson and Samson 10” pipe wrenches
Sandvik hammers
Sandvik hole saws and quick change arbors
Clifton 550 spokeshave (as well as a Stanley one)
Cheapo bench grinder (not shown)
New in box Rotozip (not shown)
5/16-18 Helicoil kit
Losta Bendix and Morse taps and dies as well as a cheapo tap and die kit
Odd wood swing out box thing with a bunch of top of the line drill bits and doodads
Unknown use wood box
Random other hammers, vice grips, bits, small odds and ends
Brown & Sharpe #765 center punch set
Old Starrett caliper
Starrett #124 inside rod micrometer (used very good condition)
Mitutoyo 101 series (not sure of the exact model) 0-1” .0001 outside micrometer (looks to be unused and brand new)

Anyways – I was pretty stoked with the haul. I ended up getting everything here at just under $350 (including the 10% buyers premium)….. I think I dun did pretty good. :bounce:

Also - the green/yellow vinyl, etc showing in the one shot is unrelated..... I have a sign business and some materials were on the tables in the way of my new tools. :wtf: :)

Very nice haul, the all black ball peen hammer on the very bottom of the box has the look of a Stanley made hammer very nice.

Looks like a Compo-Cast to me too

Good eyes!! I had not even caught that in there. I took that box home but cropped and more at full size you can clearly see PO-CAST on the head. Its a smallish one so I'm guessing that its a 16oz one. Excellent. :)

Better closeup (all I have here at the shop) as well as a pic of the cheapo grinder and rotozip and larger shots of the Proto 500 sets. On closer inspection of the Proto sets I'm now thinking the 16 piece metric set in the darker roll is actually the synthetic leather and not real leather. The much lighter colored roll on the 15 piece SAE set I'm pretty certain is real leather. Looking at this at home this morning I noticed the ties on the metric set had a couple of threads hanging off the edges and the patterning on the skin is just too uniform and consistent. Pretty darn good fake leather though. Had me fooled for a bit until I really looked close. Thats probably the reason for the significant color difference in the 2 rolls as well. Pretty amazing to stumble across both an SAE and metric sets of these in unused condition with the wrenches still in the original plastic wraps. And its the larger sets too! They also made smaller sets like this with double open end.

As much as I love them, in their condition I'm reluctant to open or use them in any way. I'm thinking I'm going to have to sell them as they are probably worth more to a collector who wants a pristine set and in the condition they are I think that adds value. I want tools I can use and for what I can sell these for I could get something else. Those rolls are freaking killer though. Denim, canvas, plastic, etc has nothing on the leather ones here (real or fake leather). First $800 or make a reasonable offer can own them though.... ;)

I'd been coveting one at the tool store, but didn't pull the trigger. I couldn't justify ball peen number... not even sure
