Well, I have a problem with buying tools all the time, and I'm always taking things apart... oh. Uh, you meant VISES. Heh. Not vices. I get it now...

The irony of an American picking on the, correct, spelling of an Englishman never ceases to amuse me. Vices it is old chap, bar where you're from. :D

CW: do you already have one or a few 8 inch vises or are you just searching for the makers of them like i have done so you'll recognize it when it appears. that 518 sounds like a beast and maybe a two piecer when hauling home.
......

I have three 8" Record vices at the moment, a No. 48, a 114 and a Leader 16. A 518 or 518 1/2 or even the never before seen 508 1/2 would be brilliant but I do fear they are unicorns ..... there has been a fleeting glimpse of a 518 before but nobody knows where it is now.
I do like to know what was made and when so I don't accidentally walk past one ;)

That's the marker of an addictive collector. :D IMHO, regardless of what type/model it is, if you can walk past or view one without it taking your fancy straight off, it's rarely one for the collection. That's why my collection is a bit eclectic. Almost every one has been bought due to the simple curio, drool or look factor more than anything else. :D

I have a 1964 Eclipse catalogue with price list coming, there may be something vice related in there, they had that tiny instrument vice that always sell for big money.
There is also a restored Swindens on ebay but its £190, the seller has a lot of nice Record's but they are all priced high.

I watched 3 of those instrument vices sell the other day and couldn't believe how much they sold for considering they are little more than a g-clamp with a hand vice bolted to it :-/

Will be interesting to see what is in your eclipse catalogue when it turns up.

That bloke with the Swindens has a 114 for 4 ton :-/ that's optimistic to say the least ....

Tedsters[/B]: so is that your first Craftsman 519x vise with that 5195 or did you already own a 5197 to keep it company? nice looking and i bet you like the quality on those. I'm still researching the maker of them and Balane had a good name for the company a while back that included Reed, Rock Island, Columbian and Starrett.

drives

this is my first 5195, I have a 5197 awaiting my arrival.
i had a member PM me about my 5195, i offered to take his 5196 off his hands but no response :D oh well. it does seem like i have a problem still,
I need a 5196 and a 98 now  I got lucky on the 5195 i guess i should say Blessed

If I'm thinking of the correct one, he's also been trying to sell that Swindens for well over a year now. Wonder if he'll ever drop the price. Measurements seem wrong too, from memory. Don't think they ever did a 5" vice?

Fretters: The Parkinson Ball Base Vise turned up today, I had to do a bit of straightening to the locking cam and a few other bits but it's amazing how solid it locks up :)

Yep, same guy http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Swindens-revolving-head-bench-vice-5-4-jaws-/231531401518

The pipe jaws are certainly bigger than on my 4" Swindens, shame the guys photography is as bad a Swindens casting quality or we would be able to read the size off the casting ....

Rub it in, why don't you. :D Shedloads of photo's of that one, (including something to give an idea of approx. size, as I've never been able to figure out how big/small those things are from photo's), would be lovely. :) What's the setup on the locking mechanism/ball with those? I've always been intrigued by the design, but never seen the gubbins as yet.

I bet you must be grinning like a Cheshire Cat with that one. That vice is pretty much my personal Unicorn, so I know I would be in your shoes. :D

I agree somewhat with that. It's a simple matter for the new owner to peel it off if they don't like it though.

Was wondering if it was a peelable one without it leaving a blank square of metal underneath by pulling the paint off. :D That truly is nigh on a perfect colour combo you picked for that one. :)

Last picture is the bent cam pin, it's bent because the locating grub screw was missing allowing the handle to come out partially and then someone appears to have hammered it. It's been straightened now.

Cheers CW. You're a star. :) I've been trying to figure out for yonks how they did the position locking on those. All is now clear. That's an absolutely pearling vice. :)

454:
I think the pipe jaws on the left go to a Dunlap 5244.

Great eye Mark! I happen to have a couple 5244's, so tried them on one, fit perfect. The funny thing is, I realized after, the seller of both sets of jaws was the same guy I bought the 5244 off a year ago.
Another vise picked this weekend was this Dunlap 5239, so I tried the other set of pipe jaws on that one, fit pretty well, although they seemed like they might be a tad big for that vise, don't fit as perfect as the others do on the 5244. The 5239 came from a different seller, so there is practically no chance of them being born together.
Lastly. are 3 pics of a small, 3-1/2" vise, cast "Made in USA", but no maker, maybe was on a sticker in the recess on the other side, but gone now. Thinking maybe Columbian or Craftsman with that shade of blue on the bottom? Has a shop made replacement swivel lock handle, but was cheap. so I grabbed it.
Jim

Rainy day, too wet for the stump so an indoor shot will have to do. I did get the 3 1/2" Columbian combination vise finished.. 203½ Went with Hammered Gray on it. This is a really nice vise in my opinion.

I'd take this vise over a Wilton C0 any day of the week.

The last photo is for Fretters.

I've been lurking for a while now on GJ especially in this thread. All of the great restorations inspired me so I have been searching on CL for a vise to restore. I found this Prentiss 19 1/2 last week.

I haven't seen one with a Bakelite knob for the lock pin before. I'm not sure if it is original.

I kind of failed as a restore project though. It really just needed a cleaning and I can't bring myself to paint it.

Welcome, Nice double swiveler, and pretty rare too, being a Prentiss without any cracks. I thought I had one, but found one of the jaw inserts cracked, go figure. Nice job on the clean up, don't feel bad about not painting it, as they say in the classic car world "They're only original once, they can be restored a 100 times".

Nice find and great move not reprinting it. It looks like it still has the original japanning on it. That knob isn't original, but probably works way better than the original plunger. I would also say that your vise is pushing 100 years old. Congrats! Now put it back to work. :)

Don't sweat it. You did a great job cleaning it up. Now slap a few coats of Boiled Linseed Oil on it to keep the rust away, mount it to your bench, and enjoy using it.

A few more pics from the swap meet this weekend, first is an Athol 623-1/2, with a fresh Krylon rebuild. Looks to be in pretty good shape, hopefully no surprises under that paint. Next is a Wilton 645, real good condition. Then a group photo of the new additions all together.
Last 3 pics are for Mike (wrenchguy). Bought this cool C clamp, never saw one like it before, took me a minute to even figure out what I was looking at. It works slick, you turn the clamp post about 90 degrees, slide it to the desired height, and turn it back so the teeth engage. final tightening is done with the screw in the side, which is missing its tommy bar, will have to fabricate a new one. Made by the Grand Co.

It's only taken me around twenty years to get around to sorting this one. :D My own bench vice. Realised it looked a bit minging and could do with a bit of TLC when I did that side by side of it with the cleaned up 8A the other week, so it's had a fettle. The gratuituous before shots.

No surprises as to which colour I went with for it. :D

Chucked this together the other day to make painting the vices a bit easier, with the bench generally being a bit cluttered. It's mainly made from some bits of an old dining table which our Gert cadged off a neighbour then decided she didn't want, so I ended up stuck with all the bits from it. Bottom chipboard box is something I fabbed up years ago for a power supply and never ended up using, so that got collared as a base.

p.s: Yes, I know my workshop is a cluttered tip. :D
