Hi everyone..

I dunno how you guys feel about Mastercraft tools or whether or not there actually is a thread on them but i wanted to know which category they fall into.. are they good enough for professional mechanics or do i rather put the extra bit with and go for Gedore?

The reason i also ask, is because where i stay, getting a Snap on or a Craftsman ratchet will mean using a credit card for net purchases, which i no longer have the privilege of owning..

What do you guys say?:headscrat

I'm assuming you mean the house brand of tools at Canadian Tire. There is a thread:

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=282389

In my opinion, Mastercraft may be good enough for a pro mechanic providing you avoid any of the "this year's gimmick" tools and go with something that more plain and reliable.

Canadian Tire tends to put sets on half price regularly. If you can wait, then wait for a sale. Sometimes they drop as low as 75-80% off too.

I have not had to exercise their warranty much (once or twice in twenty years) - on my car, it's much more likely to break the bolt than break the wrench.

The tools have next to zero resale value. I have a lot of Mastercraft tools and they're super useful, but not near and dear.

I'm guessing there aren't too many Canadian Tire locations in the Republic of South Africa...

I'm thinking this is closer to what the OP is inquiring about:
http://www.mastercrafttools.co.za/

Thats right.. i am not in Canada so i dont know of Canadian Tire.. but the responses to this thread have already helped me to make up my mind..

Thanks everyone..

The responses in this thread have been about a brand of tools that have literally nothing in common with the ones you are asking about.

For professional use, in my opinion, I would spend the extra bit and go with Gedore. We've used both brands in the racing environment and the Gedore is just far superior. In fact, we are currently busy changing all our tools over to that brand.

That was what i actually meant.. i figure if Gedore is one of our better makes,in SA then rather i stick to it than to buy an item which might cause me frustration later on..

Thats why i said that some of the posts have already helped me decide.. if the US members stick to Snap On and that is their truck brand, then sticking to Gedore is good for me cos in RSA we have Gedore plant and thry churn out good tools..

Thanks chaps..

Sums up my experience perfectly. I have some older "Professional Series" combination wrenches which I quite like. I was terribly disappointed with the latest offering of metric combination wrenches labeled "Mastercraft". Quality was very poor.

I have a complete set of box and ratchet, Impact box , impact torx impact hex) Mastercraft Maximum. I used it since 5 years in a automotive garage, 40 hours/weeks.

Broke 1 1/4 ratchet. Thats it.

The Maximum series are very good for the price. Life garantee is very nice too, no question about the tool when you go in Canadian Tire for get another one. '' It's broken? We dont care, go take another one. ''

I prefer snap on ratchets, Channellock for pliers ... But a 340 pieces for 200$ with a lifetime garantee, it's good. For the Base Mastercraft, it's another story. It's for very lite use... Mastercraft Maximum is the way to go.

Sorry for my english, i'm a frenchy bas**** ;)
