Colin: post it up on the main vise thread because Fretters is just restoring his Fortis and there are several other members in our group that reside near you. it looks like yours has the quick release which is a very cool option, but not easy to pull apart and put back together i'm told.

BTW did your dad really say that stuff in your signature??

They were produced by Herbert's in Coventry. CW has some info on them, as well as a few in his collection, and as DIF mentions, I'm currently working on one of a different style.

Ill post it over there too, and yes. Dont put ya finger was about a guy who push the pin out of a battery tray with his finger , swing out type on a bus and cut the top clean off, dad stood there hands on hips and announced ,"DONT PUT YA FINGER WHERE YOU WOULDNT PUT YA *****" and it kind of stuck in my mind. I was 8 im now 45. Lol.

Although Gotcha640 was being humorous because of your spelling of "vice", he isn't far off the mark.
Heroin is likely an easier habit to break than collecting old "vises".

Then again, if you are from the "other" side of the pond, "vices" are the hardware addiction of choice.

CwazyWabbit on here. If you check his posts in the vices thread, he's posted some old catalogue entries for the Fortis vices within the last week or two.

They do seem a good vice. This one I have is rough as sin from a cosmetic viewpoint, but the design is quite good. The older ones, which yours appears to be, were a bit more refined in general than mine too, it seems.
