Hi, I have the opportunity to buy this box for 350 locally. I am not real familiar with the different models from Snap-On. Sorry for the bad pic but does anyone know which model it is? 350 seems like a good price, but I am not positive.

Any input would be appreciated.

Thank you, Ben.

Looks like a KR-557, 7 drawers and about 32" wide and 19" deep. Probably has friction drawer slides, maybe ball bearing. Pretty good for the price, I have one just like it.

Here is another pic of it. It is pretty tempting. I could definitely use the box, but with all the deals on boxes locally I want to make sure I get a good one.

Any opinions if this box is better than a craftsman griplatch box? I have a 40 inch one now.

My guess is that it's a KR557F -
31.5"W x 18"D x 38"H.

The trim has been painted black and there looks like a sticker on the bottom drawer. The side handle is probably off a later model. It probably has friction slides, but friction slides have their advantages too.

To answer your question - I hate the Craftsman griplatch, so my answer would be an astounding YES.

I have that box. I like it

the SO pro series is all BB which is nice, that one is only BB on the bottom drawer

but that is way better than any Cman box you can get for $350

it came with the black trim. it was the spirit of america edition. IIRC it was put out in the late 80's.

I have that box... I think mine is a 1980 vintage though.

Mine has the friction slides though. Works alright. Only reason why I took it out of service was to get a that Matco box that I re-worked into Taupe off - white..

well I felt like buying boxes today and bought this one off of craigslist too. 40 bux, needs a repaint though. I couldn't find a model number stamped anywhere. It only has 3 friction slider doors. Any guess on which model?

I think it might be a IN355

I wanted to wipe it down the bottom box as it has a lot of sticky black adhesive splattered on it. The adhesive comes off easily, but with just soap and water on a rag I am getting a lot of red paint rubbing off. Is this common? The 40 dollar top box doesn't do this at all.

It almost seems as if it wasn't sealed properly, but I do not know what type of finish these boxes came with.

I forgot to mention earlier, but the bottom box definitely has ball bearing slides on all the drawers...I am happy about that.

I'd take almost any S/O box over a C-man anyday... even S/O friction vs. ballbearing. I've got a similar old S/O bottom box with the friction slides.. almost 30 years old and still smooth like butta' Certainly worth the $350 entry fee. I notice you picked up a slightly beatup top box for $40 too. Score!!! :bounce::bounce:

Congrats...

Considering the vintage of the box; it is not surprising that oxidized red paint is coming off; wd40 or even transmission fluid is good for getting stuff off boxes.... sometimes "bug/tar" remover work too! Post some more pics when you get it all cleaned up! :) All my "red" boxes have had paint come off (oxidized paint) on the rag; when I polished them. My boxes are Matco, Mac and Snapon/Bluepoint.
Look for model #'s on the back left hand corner and pull out the drawers and point a flashlight inside the box in a dimly lit area (or at night) and many times you can see the stamping; especially if it has been repainted. Many times the paint fills in the stamping on the outside but can be seen from the inside; this was how I figured out my box before I sanded it down.

Ok, so I loaded up a drawer on the KR657 and after I close it the drawer opens about 8 inches and stops. Is there some sort of catch that keeps the drawer closed?

Some of them have locks at snap into place when the drawer is closed, but in this case, you should probably put some thin flat shims under the front wheels, so that gravity takes over.

Judging by your description, you probably need to replace your slide detents. You have a choice between soft and firm. I'd recommend the soft ones unless you enjoy tugging on the drawer every time you go to open it. Installation requires removal of the drawer but not the slides. Requires two detents per drawer.

Soft Detent

well if it has all BBslides then you got the newer version of that box. sounds right for the 1989 date you gave.
with the bb slides that is a way better box than the cman can hope to be. and for $300 that earns you a big YOU **** for that one.
that is the box I wanted to upgrade to from the version that I have that only has bb slides on the bottom drawer.
I dont remember what that box was selling for, but I remember it bieng 'insane expensive' at the time
