I HATE days like this. Just got a call from my buddy at a car show swap meet. He's looking at a Reed 406R and an 8" Columbian for 600 total. I am yelling into the phone "I want the Reed 406R" and the phone...goes......dead.

His battery must have died. Now I just have to wait to see if he has ANY brains at all!:eek7::puke:

That was my phone jamming device. I'll show you pictures of that 406R after I bring it home.

Question is did Fretters get it as it was very local to him. Pick up only always leads to a cheap price.

Not I, unfortunately. The wife had relieved me of any spare cash I had earlier in the day. :D On a brighter note though, I should have what I believe to be a Woden 186E/8 here in the not too distant future.

I have finally made some progress on my American Scale 3". I tend to be a glutton for punishment when it comes to resurrecting things that many would pass on and my first old vise resto or resto/mod in this case is no different. I was basically given this vise so I had nothing to lose in case it didn't work out but I had to at least try. It helps to have the mindset of "don't let perfection get in the way of an improvement" when working with these old broken things.

The before pics show how sad the jaw perches were and the crack on the dynamic slide. I made the best of a bad deal by milling off the jaw perches all together and created a step for the new jaws to rest on. Unfortunately there wasn't a square edge anywhere on the static jaw or the body so I had to rely on the dial indicator and the set-ups took longer than I anticipated. I am hoping the three screws I added to the slide will at least keep the crack from spreading. I also had to drill and tap through both jaws as I wasn't left with many threads even after bottom tapping the holes.

My next step is paint. Any suggestions? I know the star used to be red originally and I am thinking the body was perhaps black but not sure.

Could you explain a bit of how you fixed the broken tower? Also if you have a better pic of how the fixed part of that tower looks. Hard to tell from the angle of the pic, but looks like a real fine repair you did there.

From the description, I think he's milled those protrusions off completely and then stepped the jaws with the mill, as on the English style jaws.

Great work, very impressive, good save!

I vote, satin or flat black for the body and red for the star and lettering. I think that would POP!:shocking:

Take care!

Been doing some metal lathe work, but sadly not vise stuff. New punch for a very old and very over built chainsaw chain rivet splitter. I know its off topic, but I think it's cool enough old American iron that you guys might like it.

3 pieces. The punch tip is a hss drill bit shank held in with a set screw, the main body is 1/2" drill rod, and the cap is cold rolled 1018 drilled and counter bored, with a cap screw holding it on. The cap is so the return spring can push something.
Fun little project!

Quite a big vice then, no weights on the adverts but I'm guessing it won't be light. I see there's a Parkinson No.9 on eBay finishing tomorrow, unfortunately collect only.

Vintage: you might need to put a space in between each link of your pictures to get them to line up on top of each other so we can see them better. or just use the paperclip like i do just above where we write our posts and attach thumbnails like an email attachment. good luck and looks nice from what i could see.

BTW their was a Bugatti vise was Ebay that a member posted the ad a few months ago and i think it was a BIN for maybe something like $6,000.

Rad: the only way to beat the deal you got on your Wilton 800 is to end up with the Bugatti so better be nice to the wifey i guess. cheers

I'm just starting on the dust cap for a baby bullet.
Here it is after turning the first step, and drilling the hole. Now to use a boring bar to take it to the required size.

Ran into a snag. Didn't have the size tap I needed in a bottoming tap. Gonna have to finish it this weekend once I pick up another tap.
Did get everything else on the back side done though.

Was looking through those pages last night which you posted the other week, from the B&H catalogue, and they have the weight listed in there. 81lb apparently, for that model. 5-1/4" jaws, 7" opening. Seems the Woden's weigh around 5lb to 6lb more than their respective Parkinson counterparts, looking at the weights listed for both.

The one in Merthyr Tydfil? I noticed that one too. Way out of my area too though.

Here is the $5.00 Craftsman vise done. Looks pretty good.

I know a lot are not a big fan of the open leadscrew vise, But got this 4 1/2 "Craftsman vise for $5.00.
I am getting ready to paint the vise.
he said it needed "Oiled" but I was fooling with it yesterday, and it went easy one way, but not the other. I think the slide part was just sticky.
E clip on lead screw is missing.

Also shown is My 504 Columbian, I paid $50.00 for, and did a quick clean up and painting.

I picked up this little guy for $5 a few days ago. It was rusty and stuck. It has 2 inch jaws and weighs 6 lbs. Here it is after clean up. I like the manufacturer mark on the side.

I coincidentally saw this vise on eBay recently. Looks pretty similar except it has 2.5 inch jaws. Still, I wonder if the same supplier made them for others to private label?

I don't know, but it's nice though, looks bigger than it is.
2" jaws,
You must mean 2" wide then; right?
That is nice.

Yeah, the jaws are 2 inches wide.

It's not as nice as your $5 Craftsman, though. That thing will give you years of good service. What did you use for paint, it looks nice?

Thanks jreb10.
I used rustoleum hammered black paint.
had it all (sort of) ground down with a 3" rolock grinding disk in a drill.
Then wire brushed it by hand.
paint had dried a few hours, and I stuck it in a 200 degree oven for about an hour.
took the jaws off, and cleaned up the top edge on a belt sander.
Here is the before and after shown again.

Thanks for the compliments everyone.

drivesitfar - I thought about drilling a hole but didn't. Probably because I wasn't sure where it ended. I would have really preferred to drill the end of the crack like you suggested then take a ball endmill and cut most of the crack then fill it all in with braze then mill it flat again. Where I do my machining I don't have the equipment to go the welding route. I took another pic for you. The end of my slide was incredibly crooked so the fist step was I had to mill it flat. I had to mill it flat because I had to establish flat plane to come off of after I flip it. I first drilled and countersunk my clearance hole then I flipped it over to drill and tap my threads. Had I attempted to drill through in one set-up my drill bit may have shot off at an angle when it met the curved interior or worse yet break.

KMScott - The lack of precision by the original manufacturer was frustrating to work with but I started the process so I figured I better finish the job. Sure I could have bought multiple 3" vises with the time I have into this one but what fun would that be! I like the red you used on yours. I considered going hammered red with a silver star and letters. I find it strange that they would change the star in their logo. Mine has 7 points and it looks like yours has 10. I also found a 3-1/2" similar to mine on ebay right now with no star. :headscrat

FMC1959 - I took another pic of the bottom side of the jaw. I created a step for the jaws to rest on.

Fretters - Bingo!

Zoomieport - You pretty much read my mind. Except I am thinking hammered gloss black, red star and silver letters.

Ah, they must have dropped the weights from the later catalogue I was looking at.

:D Wonder if he'll be phoning Joe later, asking Joe if he wants to pop round and look at the 406R bolted on his bench.

Nice work on that vice btw. :)

Thanks for the compliments everyone.

You deserve them You've made a lovely job of that. :)

drivesitfar - I thought about drilling a hole but didn't. Probably because I wasn't sure where it ended.

The best way I've found for finding the true end of a crack is to wipe the surface over with a rag soaked with white spirit/stoddard solvent/turpentine substitute, and then wipe the excess off the surface. As the solvent on the surface evaporates, you'll usually be left with an easily visible wet line where the solvent has crept into the crack, as it evaporates far more slowly from there. The end of the wet line should be the true end of the crack.

That's the baby....

Aye, asking a favour like that is a good way of either losing or half killing friends. :D That 00 is a cutey. :)

CW: since you have beer cans over in your part of the world that might hold a gallon or liter of beer it's hard to tell how big your new little Record vise is. i'm guessing maybe a 2 inch jaw and maybe a 5 or 8 pound vise? nice addition to your growing family.

XCM: excellent work on that Old American Scale vise. you did so many cool things to it to save it would you mind putting a few of the before and after pictures with your thoughts in the Vise Repair 101 thread for others that are not welders to see? your vise so your color, but since it was made in Kansas how about a nice John Deere green with yellow trim?

Vintage: nice work on the little end cap for Charger's baby bullet. i hope it works. I"m guessing it probably helped to have Kevin's assist with his drawing and the prior pictures he posted of him whittling out a few at his shop?

Joe: Any news on the Reed 406?? or did Tree offer to sell it to you with a little VIG on top of original price for his effort?
