Tamper & Weather Resistant Outlet Requirements?

Do the codes require tamper resistant outlets in my new detached workshop? I'm being told they are required everywhere except for outlets over 66" high and those in enclosed places. Just wanted to confirm.

If tamper resistant outlets are required, are there any choices for quality outlets? I've already bought the better grade standard outlets and the only tamper resistant ones I could find in the big box stores seem to be poor quality.

Are weather resistant outlets required in outdoor locations? I had already planned to install "in service" weather resistant covers. If weather resistant outlets are required, what are the cover requirements?

Thanks much,

DC

I believe new installs require weatherproof in service covers now. I don't think tamper proof is required in garage but the newest copy of the NEC I have is 2009 I think? There are spec grade TR receptacles available but most supply houses don't carry them at least around me, I guess they figure residential work is bid cheap so nobody wants to upgrade except for nutcases like me (TR isn't required for commercial... yet...)

I couldn't find them locally either. I did find some on Amazon for around $11 each. That's not a good option.

I have planned for GFCI but not AFCI so I hope that is not a requirement.

See if your local supply house (NOT HD, Lowe's, etc. - around here it'd be Dominion Electric or Dulles Electric but those are local places - wherever electrical contractors in your area buy their stuff) will order the quantity that you need. They may not stock them but they can get them.

part no, TRBR15xx where ** is the color suffix

I can't guarantee that the price will be great but it'll be better than Amazon. I find that their prices are better than HD or Lowe's anyway especially for spec grade devices as that makes up the bulk of their sales.

TR **** because after you plug something in 10 times the little tamper pieces stop working anyway. My inspector said I did not need them in my detached garage. But if your inspector calls for them you have to do it. It is more work but you can swap them out after the inspection.

Only outside outlets would need to be weather resistant, with an in use cover.

Thanks

Thank you for the part number. With that number I found several suppliers online for less than $5 each including Lowe's (online only).

I hope that is the case for me. Rough-in inspection is scheduled for Monday so I may know something then if I'm around when the inspector comes by.

If the adopted Code is 2011or earlier, then it's required to install tamperproof receptacles in a garage, whether detached or not.

In 2014 they changed the Code to no longer requiring them in garages. Texas is one of the States that has adopted the 2014.

As others have said, you need both a weatherproof GFI and an in use cover.

Thank you. My city is still on the 2011 code but I hear they are in the process of adopting the 2014 code later this year or early next year. Maybe the inspector will give me a pass knowing that a change is coming anyway. Unfortunately, he put me off until tomorrow on the rough-in inspection.
