Best way I have ever found to remove stuck things is to heat them with a propane torch, and then spray on sea foam deep creep while its hot. Sea foam is the only penetrant I have found that doesn't just flash to smoke instantly. Second choice is no heat, and crc freeze off. After that comes sea foam without heat, then the usual liquid wrench, pb blaster, ect.

I refuse to buy kroil.... I can buy a can of seafoam, and a can of freeze off for the price of a can of kroil, and still have enough leftover to buy a propane bottle for my trigger start torch....

Automatic transmission fluid is pretty decent too, especially with some acetone added

Mixed feelings about hearing about the base. +/- :dunno:
Either way, a good price.

Jake, I was bummed all the way home thinking about it, but now that I have it apart, I'm fine with it. It's obviously stronger being steel than cast iron, it's actually very well made. Thinking I may even set it up on the mill on the rotary table and clean up the outside, then long as none of you guys say anything, no one would ever know.

As far as pics, I took a couple of the inside of the base, below, then blew it apart, have 80% of the paint off, will post more pics of it as I restore it.

And here's a few pics of a Parker 63-1/2 I just finished up to hold you pic hounds over.
Jim

So I just picked up a pretty lightly used Record 3VS from craigslist. I think it's a very nice vise - beefy, very little play in the action or the jaws, paint was about an 8.5 / 10, no major dings, dents, etc. The only issue is I can't seem to figure out a way to mount it so that something long clamped in the vice will clear the base. Which also means I can't get the fixed jaw to clear the edge of my workbench. Any ideas?

I normally don't get much of a chance to go vise hunting during the work week but today was different. I found this little prize buried in an ad over the weekend and made an offer.

The owners proceeded to to argue with themselves over the price and finally accepted a price 10.00 lower then my offer:confused: it was just a few miles from work so I drove over this afternoon and picked it up

Columbian 224 1/2 in great shape aside from the bent handle:thumbup:

Here is another shot of the side for all you information hounds:lol:

I think I remember reading that the age for Colombians can be tracked with the writing on the side of the vise. This has the arced font but it looks too small for the older style vises.

I'm wondering the same.'has anyone found any catalogs showing the old reeds?

Bagged & Danstead, I haven't seen him on here in a bit, EOC Jason is our resident Reed expert and could answer a lot of your questions. Some of the other guys on here also have a lot of knowledge. Mine is more limited but here are 7 brochures I found (on the web) and my limited genealogy of the Reed vise.

The first thumb and thumb # 5 and then JPG's 1907, & 1911 have the classic original Reed 100 & 200 series with the "meatball" handle.

Thumb # 4 has the flat nose, but if you look at the bottom right inset picture, it is a 103.5...still before the "R" models

Thumb # 3 shows the comparison chart and shows they had discontinued the "R" models, which came after what is in thumb # 4. When they disco'd the "R's" is where when the dropped the 200 series name for the swivel base and just went with N or S.

Reed's are still made today, but from what I hear they are outsourced to maybe Columbian, which is now owned by Wilton. Anyway what the current state is I am not sure, but for the classic Reed's I would say something along these lines.

Reed started in 1896 and introduced in their first year or shortly thereafter the "meatball" handle of the 104, and probably went till the early to mid 30's.

Somewhere around this time they went to the flat nose.

Somewhere in the 40's-50's timeframe they made the biggest change where the overall look changed and also added the oil hole, I think these would have been the first "R's". (your model Bagged)

Then late 50's or mid 60's is when they went to the N/S models, like Danstead's vise.

There were other changes like when they had the Reed Oval logo on the vise, others can fill in when this and other changes happened.

Reed also has the distinction of having gone with the same series (the 100 series) for most of there existence which helps. Most others (Prentiss & Parker most notably) had so many changes over the years for their main machinist vise.

Maybe not the most accurate, but should give you a basic idea of the Reed history. :)

Originally it was the vise and table for 300. I said I could do no more then 100.00 for just the vise. She balked at first then, after 6 frenzied emails sent while I was sleeping, accepted the price of 90.00:dunno:

I can highly recommend not doing business with tweakers:lol:

Thanks for the Info FM,

My Reed is stamped 12 55 and would gladly share any info I can. Also, it has removable jaws-- even though they were modified somewhat!

Don't I know that one... I had a pair of them I was buying a 954 parker from. They started out at the EBAY BIN price of 450.00:eyecrazy:. Luckily I carry print outs of Things I have bought on there as well. It just so happened that I had bought a 954 before for 80.00 and they took my price in an instant. Guess they just needed a fix or something.

Very cleaver. I wonder why things of this nature aren't made today... We have to improvise in our shops instead.

I'm glad I took a picture of these last weekend after I misplaced them for a few months

These are pictures of custom jaw covers that pivot to hold irregular shaped objects. The guy who made them was an aerospace machinist and built some really neat gizmos in his shop. Sadly his Wilton bullet vise I bought didn't come equipped with a set but the pictures are enough for me:beer:

If something long is catching on the base slightly, just slip a piece of angle iron over the rear jaw when you're clamping a long piece, to give a gnats extra clearance. Mount it in standard fashion, with the rear insert a shade proud of the bench front, with one lug either side of the vice and one to the rear.

I'll give that a shot. Thanks!

POLL: what is a good total price for Wiltons C1, C2, and C3 (all three)? These are used but in good shape, no cracks, welds or repairs, jaws all in good shape and no missing pipe jaws or end caps. Cash buy from one seller all at one time.

Appreciate your input!!

FYI I didn't cut Jeff off at the pass everyone, I saw the ad last night and emailed the guy right away, got his reply early this morning when I woke up. I am only getting the C-3, Jeff is welcome to the other two. I can pick them up for you if you want, but then you'd have to drive to S.R. Jeff. Let me know I am more than happy to do it. Don't know if my car can handle that much weight in the back though.

I can confirm this. In my book all's fair when it comes to vise sales/buys. Honestly, I saw the ad when it posted last night, too, and I was hoping someone would jump on it to keep the divorce papers at bay ... when it still appeared to be available this morning I couldn't help myself from throwing him an offer. Glad you got something worked out  Definitely need to make it back over for some SR bike rides sometime soon, would love to see your shop, Lu.

I might visit California this year

Please keep us posted, Kevin!! Maybe you can hand deliver the new jaws for the P98

bigcaddy was right!! It's raining Wilton combos right now. The guy apparently has (soon to be 'had') two C-3s, so both Lu and I are getting one, mine will be accompanied by the younger C1 and C2 siblings

If either one of you want to pass on a C2 or C3, im looking for something bigger for home or shop.

Let's chat early next week when they are in my hands and I can provide more info!
