Is this stamped number on the dynamic jaw of my Reed 104R the date or part number? It's stamped 757.

I don't think that's a date. My older Reed is stamped 257 on both jaws, but the style is older than 1957. I think those markings are reference marks for fitted pieces. There should be the same stamp on the static jaw somewhere.

BC: if the shipping wouldn't kill the deal keep me in mind as well. A good Wilton C0 or a C1 is the top of my list as my welding table vise, next on the project list.
All: as for Reed date stamping. The very nice 204R I just traded to MacGee, had no date stamp but lots of matching number stamps for sorting as stated earlier.

Worked a job event and then went to visit Jakemac, what a sweet setup he's got in his shop andcsome REALLY NICE VISES! And best of all, NO ALARM SYSTEM!!!! I'll be up to see you again soon Jake 
Finally picked up my Reed 403 1/2. So very sweet. Thanks Jake for picking it up.
On the way to Jake's I found this Columbian 204 1/2. It is complete, in PERFECT condition. Jaws are smooth and like new. I can get this to look like it is new. Paid $75.

I picked up a 3" Bulldog 512/ 522 at a Estate auction today. The Jaws look like they have seen better days and I'm hoping to find replacements. Swivel base works well and I can't find any cracks or damage elsewhere. Handle is slightly bent but that can be straightened. Any links or info for Replacement jaws would be greatly appreciated.
From searching other treads I think this was made in the early 40's??

I'm guessing the squeeze type swivel base is later than the spring pin or locking bolt type, but don't know exactly when. I need to make some jaws for mine too, one was cracked when I took it off. Can you get a pic of the bottom of yours when you get a chance, I'm thinking the retainer that holds the swivel base to the vise on mine isn't original, but not sure, like to compare.

I remember seeing another setup like yours, mine has a steel plate instead of the 2 washers, held on with 2 SHCS. I guess I'll leave it, a 1 piece steel plate must be at least as good as 2 washers, I would think.

danstead and 454: My P98 with same base has the washers (see photo here), but really intrigued by the one-piece setup. Even though the bolts don't have anything to do with the actual locking like they do on a regular style swiveler, the single plate and its exponentially larger surface area would provide much better support under forward/back and side/side loads (i.e., the base getting rocked in the of the swivel). I'll post pictures when I do a rebuild post on the 98 in the Vise Repair 101 thread, but you will see that the washers were REALLY bent out of shape. I guess the only thing limiting the thickness plate would be the swivel base height, something around 1" would ridiculously be sturdy and also add a few pounds. The only reason I hesitate at all is because maybe it's a part that's designed to fail ... under a heavy load they bend instead of the swivel tabs breaking? What do you think?

Hi drives, sorry I did not reply to this post! As you know, I was up in your neck of the woods for a few days (did get to Willows on Sat
) and I wasn't posting much - I can read the Tapatalk on my phone OK but find it really hard to post, and that's all I had with me. But fret not!!! Pictures abound here and here.Currently, it is just about completely disassembled and going to get the full monty makeover, incl. new jaws and perhaps a few other goodies from the Rev. Will of course post a couple of rebuild posts on the VR101 thread when the time is right. Oh! I think the base to which you refer was not part of this deal but is probably where it will end up - it's about 350# as it sits and can take another 100# in sand, plus it has 16 holes for floor attachment, so it seems like a good candidate for a huge swiveler

The box is 10-1/2" / 268mm in length. Imagine four 12 oz / 355ml beverage cans lined up. It's a bit of a monster

thought i would post this, the 5195 in the 1957 still has the CM Badge on it, this 1958 is stamped in the casting must have been the year they changed a little.

thats a nice find no matter what you paid, i have never seen a C3 around me anywhere in 2 yrs for sale. if you find another give me a holler, Nice Find as far as the date i have not got a clue (autopts) would be a good one to holler at

Repairs like that don't bother me personally. It's a good, honest repair, and will be far stronger than the original lug was. I'd keep that repair as is, if it were mine.

It's a user, not a shower. The only clean-up I'd do on that is for function, not for looks.

I agree, stick it on a welding table or truck bumper and wail away on it.

I don't think they dated all of there vises, i had a 4in that was not dated no where. kind if maybe went into the trunk of a car. maybe why some slipped by who knows

Lu-max: on key way for dates on Wilton bullet vises. Some that don't have dates were made from 1941-1945 for uncle Sam. My guess is your stamp has worn off if its not under a coat or two of grease. Looks like a monster and a keeper. Perfect vise and only issues I know of on those is the swivel bases tend to break.
TJ: I'll look at pics of your #98 when I get on laptop again. Sorry I missed you this trip. Did chin up tip help you golf game? So how are those divorce papers coming along if you are buying the entire Wilton C series this week?

I concur with the rest. It looks like a good vise that you wouldn't mind getting it dirty, splattered with slag, etc. That actually looks like a good functional repair. I'm surprised that the dynamic jaw moves freely because I restored a 204 in similar condition that had to go into a 25 ton press to free it up.
IMO: If it was me & assuming that there were no cracks or other issues, I'd buy for <20$, give it a cleaning, quick rattle can painting, lube it up, and beat away at it, rather than seeing it go to the scrap yard. I'd choose it over a new HF vise any day of the week.

That one should date to the mid to late 70s. After that they had a small inset under the jaw tower for a sticker. Then it moved to the dynamic jaw tower.

You are correct, the badge insert is front and center on the dynamic tower. It also just so happens that I have two brand new Wilton badges in a stuff bin somewhere in my shop.

You guys think this reed is worth anything? It has 4" jaws and the dynamic jaw moves freely. It was obviously repaired after an ear was broken off. I can't see the model number because of the hideous repair.
thats a nice old reed with stories to tell and work todo. if cheap enough get it as a user. heres my broken rock island that's my outside vise. tested tough enough!

Putting was a different story altogether and made after-round beers on the sun-deck much more memorable than my scorecard The Ms. is a bit
as to why I need any more vises, let alone three but, as long as they are out of sight and out of mind in the shop, all seems to be kosher. Thankfully (for her) my vise money is tapped after these Wiltons, I am actually going to have to sell some to keep going. First on the block will be a couple of Snap-On Tradesmans and then probably the 8" post vise ... that last one should bring $1K+ if the last two that size on eBay are an accurate indicator.
