How big does your wrench set go to?

It seems like 10 -19mm is the most common set but I think if I were to buy another set I would try to get a larger complete set. Wright has a 7-24 mm set that looks great and covers a lot of sizes.

But how often do you use your larger wrenches? Which ones and on what?

2 1/2" is the biggest wrench I have. And I don't use it much at all.
I have use a 2" and 1 1/2" a good amount

That covers my needs for the most part. And I have a gigantic monkey wrench that gets used for big stuff every once and a while working on tractors.


Edit, I have have a set of pump wrenches up to 2 9/16", but only because I got them on sale so stupid cheap I couldn't say no. They'll probably get used one day when I have the money to get into boats...

Valve tappet covers often use large size, and wrenches are the only way to get to them.

That's good to know thanks. I work on motorcycles a lot too but have been using a socket and ratchet for the big bolts that are 19mm +

It would be nice to eventually fill my collection of larger wrench sizes so I can use a wrench instead. on motorcycles I actually prefer to use a ratcheting reversible wrench because they are so lightweight, slim, fast and simple.

For the larger sizes that are 19mm+ I don't need ratcheting but I have ocd and they need to match as much as possible. I sold off my plain Cman wrench set and plan on either getting the Williams 8mm - 24 or 8mm - 32 set? Or get the wrightgrip 7 - 24mm and buy the ones I need that are larger than that seperatly.

Yeah I think up to 22 mm - 24 mm is acceptable. Things that are larger than that can use a socket with a ratchet or impact gun.

Buying big wrenches individually would be nice but it's not cost effective because they get pretty expensive for bigger sizes for quality name brands. it can be cheaper to just invest in a big set early on.

I'd guess for something as large as 60 mm you would have a 1/2 or 3/4 impact gun by your side. But nothing beats a wrench in terms of access in tight small places. That's where a wrench can be the best and or only tool for the job.

I have from 3/16" to 1 1/2 by 1/16's, except for 1 3/16" in my Proto set. I use most of them quite regularly except for the oddballs like 19/32 and 25/32. I'm surprised how often I use those over 1".

Metrics I use up to about 22 regularly, although I have larger ones.

Usually a person can use a ratchet and socket, I have the range from 1/8" to 2 5/8" covered there.

For combo wrenches: SAE up to 2" and metric up to 32mm. I may go up to 2 1/2" at some point, but it would be pretty pegboard eye candy.

I have KD for my large size set (8-32mm) now. I like the Williams and Wright. I find the non-reversable ratcheting style are more handy to have around.

I find that with bikes it is useful to have several sets of wrenches in the sizes up to 19mm and one set that is the bigger stuff.

I have to work on whatever comes through the door though (Honda cycle dealer but service of all makes/models of bikes,ATV,watercraft,SXS Stihl, and Honda Power Equipment) so having tool overkill is a must to keep production flowing.

I don't run across big metric stuff that needs wrenches, I have SAE up to 2 1/2" and a few slug wrenches that go bigger. Metric I only have to 25 MM.

SAE sockets I have to 3 1/2" (not axle nut style) and metric sockets I have to 36 MM.

When you get to bigger sizes there is usually more clearance, so I also have really big adjustables, slip joint pliers, pliers wrench, and pipe wrenches.

I have as large as 36 mm, but the biggest one I normally use is my 27, on the nut on the rear axle bolt on my motorcycle. Otherwise, I need a 22 on the jam nut for tie rod ends.

At work, 1 1/2" is as big as I have in my box. Sometimes need a bigger one over 2" but we just keep those in a crew locker, available to every one. I don't use large metrics at work. I have up to a 19mm in my box. At home 1 1/16 and 19mm are the largest that I have.

I have combo wrenches in 6-32mm and SAE 1/4-1-5/8. I feel this is all I need for an average tinker with everything guy. I find I use my 20-24mm combos a decent amount....but rarely use a 26 or 32. I think most serious tool guys should invest up to 24mm and 1-1/4. Most stuff bigger can get by with a large adjustable. I have a 24" adjustable that opens over 2" and have rarely used it. I also run Proto for my SAE set up to 1-3/8 and Sk up to 24mm. After that the mm become Craftsman because of price and the SAE become whatever I have randomly aquired. They work well and the big ones cost as much as a set of 8-19mm in good brands. I have to say HF even for the big ones...you can only put so much toque on these things and they are so heavy and not used much....go cheap. I am **** about sets all being same brand and style...but this is one area where I let that slide because of incredibly high cost and very limited use.
