Here is my pair of vises. Columbian 606 and D45. I have no idea their age, but can only presume old. The 606 I bought last week and already love it. Just need to formulate a plan to mount it and be able to utilize it like it should be. The D45 I was given by my father when I first bought my house/shop; it's just lag bolted to my workbench. I will probably re-mount to it's own stand and allow it to be mobile for light duty use.

Any information on the age of either will be greatly appreciated. The D45 I presume is pretty old, some of the other D45s on the net have 5-1/2" cast into the dynamic jaw; this one only has D45. Also I find it strange that most other D45s have screw on jaw inserts, and mine doesn't even have holes for screws. Anybody have an idea how to toss some inserts on that can take some abuse? The 606 is probably as old as, if not older than the D45; I got it from my parents' neighbor along with a lot of really old tools.

Silver: I see two holes for jaw screws that are either plugged with old broken off screws or some other material on your dad's old Columbian vise. Several members here can make you a new pair if you ask and provide measurement.not sure cost or there were a lot of those vises made and maybe you can find a used set. Looks ok other than missing jaws. You big 6 incher will need maybe a heavier bench to mount it on or you'll need to bolt bench to studs or floor.

Upon further examination I too see blemishes where screw holes would be, both jaws look that way and seem almost welded shut, not quite broken screws. Guess I'll start searching for inserts.

Mounting the 606 is troubling. I plan to build a steel work bench similar to Steve-O's, as I am again out of toolbox drawer-space and am not too fond of this wooden bench. Hopefully a 10' steel tubing bench will be heavy enough to allow the big vise to be securely mounted (and me to put the whammy to it).

Silver, for a lighter vise like that I'd make some smooth jaws out of some harder aluminum alloy. Straight drill and countersink for mounting holes, once you get the screw holes unplugged. (easy out?)

:+1: Get fancy and put a vertical V in one and a horizontal V in the other.

So a while back I ended up with a Wilton 400S that was in need of a serious overhaul. Since I already have one, it's going to be a gift for a friend on mine. The paint was bad, decals were missing, etc. but it's a great fixer-upper.

I've already welded up 2 holes made in the jaw towers (they were drilled into the jaw insert pin cavities) and given it some fresh paint. The decal has been covered by our own Thundermug and today I turned out some lockdowns.

I'll finish them on Monday when I can get my "mushrooming" jig set up and give them the correct shape on the ends.

The original lockdown is in the middle:thumbup:

It was a Dake. 1944 vintage. He cut it and scrapped it. :(

He loved it. But couldn't move it.

****, I hope you're able to save the Parker.

Picked this up the other day. I posted it in it's own thread...but besides a few nice comments...it didn't get much love...:(

Figure I'll add it to the "pile" here...

Thanks..it still has a YORK label on the front of it.
How were you able to determine it's a 125? I can't find any model number on mine.

Snagged this for $20 yesterday. Who makes/made them for SO? Edit: Oh, and where can I get the jaw plate?
uploadfromtaptalk1430648679886.jpg

Thats a Wilton Tradesman. Kevin Scott , who is on this boardca ton, is where you get the jaws.

At $20 that is a 'you ****' price . This exact vise was my first restoration

Just noticed that the jaws have grooves nearly identical to early Wiltons. Is it possible that when Wilton copied the York vise for their original "Bullet" they even copied the grooved jaws?

Hey Silver,

Sorry for the late post. Looks like a good, versatile collection you have.

I'm going to take a wild guess at your vises.
606: I'm guessing the 50s or 60s. Based on the overall style, squared end lead screw at the handle and the embellishments. I can't see the embellishments very well in the picture, but the "Columbian" name looks straight.

D45: I'm guessing that it was made in the 70s. Based on the overall style and the more pronounced "T" styled jaws.

Dunlap vise info please

Bought this vise at a garage sale. paid $5. I am working on my second YOU ****. 3.5 inch. Can anyone tell me about it. How old is it? Are all Dunlap vises made in the USA? It does not say " Made In USA" anywhere. Should have taken some pix before I took it apart to clean it. Thanks Jim
