Drives, I'm not sure it's really possible to upgrade from that morgan! I'm fairly certain I will never need a vise bigger than that. And that little rock island is probably the nicest made vise I have ever seen!

When I do make it down your way, I have some steel in mind I'd be interested in, and also something like a nice 4" swivel base. My dad liked that little rock island so much, he's probably not going to be as happy going back to the record once I set up my own shop and it goes with me. I was thinking I might find him something like an old reed, or maybe even a wilton bullet. So I might be interested in one more of your vises at some point!

you can never have too many tools

Not something one comes across every day any more. This is the third Trahern pump vise I've owned but the first with the working platform attached . These are used to service and install well pumps and wind mills. Trahern started is 1857. This vise is a 1889 model. They were bought by Roper in 1906. These use to be a common find on old farm auctions but not so much any more. Amazingly , there is one other being sold on ebay . The seller is 45 miles from me. This one is older and nicer.

I also salvaged this Dake No1 arbor press. It needs cleaned lubed and a handle. I may be calling on the master (Kevin) to help me with that if I can't come up with one.

Jeff May: in case you need a few stand ideas many members have posted theirs on this thread. you are very welcome for any help i can give you and if you need anything just PM me again or post questions on this thread and get some of the real experts to give you some. good luck and what you have is the best parts of that old Reed so it's a good vise as is now if you need one to use. here's the link to the vise or grinder stand thread for you and others to click on if you need some ideas or post and add your own if you have one.

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=252799

Squash: your Bonum most likely is a drill press type vise that would sit inside a pair of jaws like this that my old drill press vise has. Cool little vise.

BC: nice haul and surprised the guy carried that decent size vise around and then didn’t buy it. what # is the Prentiss swivel jaw vise and I have a few of them so if you need any pictures or help just ask. Also I really like those old Athol vises too.

VA: nice work on that awesome brass vise and I’d love to find one to buy one day if it didn’t cost me a couple arms and legs.

JRobb: your little collection of quality vises is growing. nice find

Muddy: orange has a nice look to it on your Rock Island and the nice thing about paint is you can always change the color later if you want to.

Vintage: I’m a little sore this morning, but I’m smiling a lot knowing you are and that those vises have found a great home. It was a pleasure meeting you and your Dad and I’m sure Dad will have his choice of something good if you both can make it down my way one day.

JBuggy: glad you are doing OK. maybe these pictures might put a little smile on your face.

ALL: JuneBuggy mentioned that the San Juan Islands is a nice place to visit and he is right on as usual. If you catch a Washington state ferry boat at Anacortes, WA you can take the boat to any one of several islands or all the way to Vancouver Island, BC in Sydney. Here are a few pictures to give some idea. I did see one porpoise (looks like dolphin) and I’ve seen many of them up there in the past. Also if you have time to take one of the boats that know where the killer whales are feeding those are pretty amazing to spend some time watching. Lots of eagles and osprey and hawks if you are a bird watcher. Water isn’t real clear like Maui or some of the cool lakes we have, but as you can see it’s pretty blue and a lot of it.

apologize if i missed comments on some of the other posts, but i have to run to MIL's about an hour's drive away. also it looks like i had to browse through about 7 pages of yesterday's posts so you guys were busy while Vintage and i were keeping up international relations.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the Vise Squad and GJ members

Topop, those Dakes usually just use a straight bar for a handle with a wing screw to position it. You might want to ask if someone can measure theirs for length though.

Great idea. I already pulled up contact info from Dake. I'll see what they will tell me about it. They started making them just after WWll so it's not super old or anything but if I send them a pic of the riveted on decal maybe they can pin point the age a lil better. But regardless the Dake will certainly replace my No.1 Jet

Do not forget ritzblitz, he builds fabulous handles and owns a lathe.

Flips have been going good this year so far and was thinking of putting together an order for some Wilton jaws from you at the same time but I'll check with him when I get the spec's on it. Thanks.

Agreed. Kevin is my go to guy but getting a handle from Ritzblitz just worked out for me and I couldn't be happier with the quality. Him and Kevin both are excellent to work with.

Drives ~ You are so right on those San Juan Islands. It truly is a hidden gem. I hope you enjoy your time there and the ferry wait times aren't too bad.

Topop, is that plate on the Dake on its pin? It looks too small for that press. It should extend under the ram.

No in the photo it was just sat on it. The plate measure's 4 1/2 " . The press is already taking an E bath. When it comes out I'll photo it up for ya !

The handles on these are simple. I have one. Length is 22 1/4" on mine, .745" diameter as measured with a dial caliper. The ends are rounded and a snap ring is on each end so it can't slide out of the pinion.

In any case yours has been modified with that hex extension welded on. Use that with a 3/4" drive ratchet and the right size socket. MUCH better to use.

That 4 1/2" plate is from a much smaller press. Any markings on it? Mine is 7" diameter.

004 is on the bottom of the plate. I'm contacting Dake this week and I'll see what they have to say about a possible replacement handle and plate. I only gave 30.00 bucks for the press so I'm not hurt to bad. But I may make a plate and handle too. Just have to see. How many positions does the 7" plate have ?

"Daisy wheels" or plates for arbor presses can be had on Ebay very reasonable. Just got one for my Greenerd 3-3/4, real nice, for some reason the one that came with my press was square on one side, so it would only turn 180 degrees.

$30 is a "you ****" even with the missing handle and wrong plate. I made my own plate for my smaller 00 Dake.

Balaneon the versa vise, I have 2 . The pitch adjustment screw in both vise's are opposite from each other. One the long split is to the top . The other is to the bottom . Which is correct? If I had to guess I am thinking the split goes to the top . But in 50/50 guesses I'm usually wrong so I thought to ask a more knowledgeable power.

I'm doing my all green one with the pear shaped knob first. The black and green with pear shape will follow later.

It all comes out even in the end. I had to give 50 for the well pump vise because I came on to eager to own it.:lol_hitti The other two I use to own I paid pocket change for. Even though this one still had the wood platform on it I should have only paid 20-30 tops. This one isn't a flipper it's a keeper... for a while any way

In a local CL ad, listed as being homemade and very heavy duty. Looks like he combined a post vise with a bench vise. I would take a trip to check it out if it wasn't for the $500 asking price.

Pretty sure that is a Peter Wright parallel vise, have always wanted to see one in person. Think they are fairly rare. EDIT: Looks like it is missing the back nut support.

Started on the mill vise after work today. I'm at the point on the drill press where I need to do some buffing before I continue, but until my finger is all healed up from the buffer bending it sideways last weekend, I'm not running that thing. No way I'm touching a Baldor with 12" wheels with all my fingers useable. I'm gonna work on vises until my hand heals, then finish my drill.
Anyways, here it is after tearing it apart, and giving it some oven cleaner.

My guess is that it's taiwanese. No cast in markings, and all metric generally fits with taiwan. Seems like a real good vise though! Some of the older taiwanese machining stuff was actually quite nice. It's definitely better than the majority of drill press vises out there!
Unlike bench vises, they actually seem to know how to make these!

Whew, easy one. The long split goes towards the top. The bottom slot is for a screwdriver to adjust tension.

All...I used Rust-Oleum Hammered Copper spray paint on all three, two coats of primer (zinc chromate) under it.

That wee beastie has got to be at least a 6" 'er...maybe an 8" 'er!!!

One of the big dogs!!!

Broken/missing support should drop the price by, at least 50%...

Offer him, after pointing out the "major problem", and "I'll have to design/machine/obtain what is a very expensive part, without which, the vise is worthless..."...

$ 150.00 and see if he'll jump...:evil::lol_hitti
