I have a thread over in the general tool section about this in case you would like to see what has already been posted, but realized after looking in this section that it might be a better place to get some great ideas. anybody want to post pictures (more the better) of your vise stands, hitch mounted vises and grinders and other methods that you can save a little space and have several at the ready to use?

I own several different vises that are good for various jobs along with many grinders that i'd like to have a different wheel on each arbor so I don't have to stop and change a wheel. I might have enough room to mount them all at the same time, but I've seen several guys here on GJ and in person that have them stored on the shelf and at the ready.

here's a few of my favorite ones I've found so far and please post yours or ones you'd like to have so we can all enjoy the pictures and maybe make some improvements in our garages and shops.

That third one looks more like a trophy, I'd be afraid to do any actual work with it :lol_hitti

Fourth one gave me some ideas and the fifth one looks most to be the most user friendly.

Nine: great comments as usual and hope to get a few more ideas for my shop and good timing for yours maybe too. by the way I just realized that I do have a double trailer hitch sitting new on a shelf I bought years ago. it was going to hold a bike rack for the kid's bikes if I needed to use it while pulling my trailer. found it cheap on Craigs for maybe $25 so not sure what they really cost, but I doubt I could make it for that.

Kazlx: so I think two of those will fit in my trailer and I'll be ready to pick them up in October when the rain starts up here. will they be ready by then? awesome job.!!!!!:thumbup::thumbup:

by the way i'm hearing your part of the world hasn't had any rain in a while so crossing my fingers for you and happy to loan you some of ours if I could.

I just picked up a diacro corner notcher and a roper whitney 218 punch and will be making mounts for them to fit in the hitches as well. I have six spots total on the table.

Kazlx: I have a few of these 150 pounders so i'll need the double hitch probably and maybe mounted under the frame of a table like yours if I can find the materials and money to make one. what do you think of my idea or is this vise too big?

I also already own a bench that might weigh 400 pounds and a couple of these carts. grinders probably ok and small vises? maybe not the 150 pounders hanging off a hitch mount??

again I have to say it your rolling steel bench is awesome and nice work.

I don't think you'll need a double hitch. I used .250 wall tubing for everything. I have a monster Hollands vise that will replace the Athol once I get it done. I don't think it will have a problem holding it. My table is over 1000 pounds though.

NastyZen: thanks for sharing your awesome idea. any chance you can get me (us) a few shots from a little farther back on all 4 sides (or at least the ones that have hitch mounts) of your table?

that's pretty darn close to what I was thinking was possible. I also have a 4 x 8 angle iron table on cast iron wheels that maybe I can find a piece of 1/2 inch or would 1/4 be enough to weigh it down? moving a piece of 1/2 inch that size might put me in the grave so maybe if I find one i'll cut it in half and put a couple extra supports under it on my rolling table.

i'll get pictures of my 4 x 8 for comments as soon as I can get it cleared off so you can see the framing.

thanks guys you're doing great so far

Using a vice on something with a light base or something that rolls is a really weird feeling. You want to torque on something but can't because it may move. It wouldn't work for how I use my vices, most of the time.

That said, I LOVE that receiver set-up shown above.

NastyZen: thanks for the link and I read the one post that you got your son to work for you for the summer and maybe weld and thread all those tighteners. any idea how long it took him to do that work?

Brent and ALL: good point about the moving table even with a lot of weight involved. do you or anyone remember the welding table that was on the front page of GJ at the end of last year for a long time. it was white, very cool looking and it had hydraulic jacks on each end to push the rollers down so you could roll it and then when jacks released it sat on the ground? it was a great idea and I think I have most of the framing done on my 4 x 8 table that is on wheels. so i'd use the hydraulics to push down the solid feet?

it sort of looked like this one that I almost bought a year or so ago.

here's my little 140 pound Parker 956 vise that sits on about a 200 pound stand that I drag outside if I really need to have a solid vise. any ideas on best ideas to put some wheels under or attached to it? I posted a picture in the first post showing wheels on an old wheel and would that be the best method to attach them?

more pictures and ideas are appreciated because I've wanted to be able to use and see my old vises in action and not just sitting in a big old Lyon cabinet every now and then.

This is made kind of like what you are asking about. Just finished this one this past week. This one shows in down work position.

This shows it in up move position. Had only finished one side and was testing clearances.

I have to say, using a vise on a movable post or table on wheels is nearly useless. Sometimes you just want to bend the **** out of something and the vise moving is counter productive. A 4x4 table with a 3/4inch top is barely enough weight without attaching it to the floor or wall.

A light bench, or something like this ... is handy for most things .....

... but sometimes the vise needs to be ... just that bit more secure .. :D

That swiss army bench is great, so much in one unit. My shop is limited on space so I am always looking for ways to maximise, Nastyzen you have given me some ideas to think over.

Cheers

Mine isn't mounted to a table, but it's that vertical style. I have a separate insert for a pipe vice, my portaband table, and Beverly shear.

Here is the Ex.

I have posted this build on a few threads but I will re post it here .

I have a single car garage shop with limited space.
I need my benches clear as I build large scale gas boats, plus other fabrication projects.

I have a total of 4 different types of bench grinders plus a 1" belt sander for various uses.
I've wanted to make this for some time.

It's not finished yet. I still need to make a plate for my belt sander, add the lock bolt to each mounting tube / plate and mount each grinder on the plates then paint it. each grinder will have a bag type cover to protect it when not in use.

Updated on my stand

90% done.
I think I need 2 more grinders and another mounting plate.

mmm more tools ......

I should mention a thank you to my buddy at jrstech for the welding
Attached Thumbnails

Fab'd a little tool tray for the grinder stand this morning.

just need to weld and paint it now.

CNGsaves:

Thanks , I did think about the wheel option you mentioned. I like these wheels because 1) my shop floor is not level. 2) it gets the top grinder to a better suited working height for me. 3) I felt that a tilt type wheel would make the stand unstable due to all the weight she's heavy.
I'm thinking of calling her my Ex. lmao !
Plus the wheels were free.

drivesitfar:
Thanks, I have grinding wheels for different applications, a set on the red grinder for every day stuff standard fine & course at 1.5 amps, a set for the green grinder at 8 amps for my lathe tooling ( green stone & white stone ) The gray grinder at 6 amps has a set of polishing wheels and a medium scotchbrite wheel, One of the new grinders I will get will be for rust removal with wire wheels. Installing all the wheels will be the last thing I do.
I will check out the link.

Tonight, My buddy just finished welding the tool tray then I cleaned up the welds and put the first coat of paint on it.
Tomorrow I will mount the tray then apply the finish coat.

Next improvement idea is to add a 15' power cord to the base & maybe a flex light.

Sorry for all the pics.

here's a few more stands i found over on the Craftsman block thread for our grinders. i like the idea of making use of a wood vise by making a plywood base for your grinder with a 2 x 2 screwed to the bottom of it for the vise to hold. CoPilot's version on his bench.

McBrownie made a rolling stand for his workmate for his grinders.

Tourqueman showed off this grinder stand made of all wood.

in case there are some other ideas you need this thread just popped up that might have a few too.

I got the tool tray painted. I baked it in the oven for 30 min @ 200 *
waited for it to cool, then drilled & tapped the stand for 1/4-20 bolts.

Done

long week Im done playing for now.

posted these pics in the brake drum thread too.
OEM tire/split rim wheel from my 72 Chevy(these are way too dangerous to use today for anything but this) I think the original air is still in that tire 42 yrs later.
not quite as slick as the hitch mounts but I remove a couple bolts and put the vise on. Whats nice is the tire is so big that I can easily roll the stand outside for some heavy grinding or messy buffing.
