That notch...I think Outlaw told me it was meant to use a wood block under it to extend it out away from a wood bench (?). I have a 106.5 Parker that has that same angle. I built a rigid steel stand and notched the vise deck to accommodate it. It's not really a needed item on the stand I made though.

Yeah my no 33 and my no 2 have that angle gusset piece. I guess I can always mount them on a notched 2x8 and use them as portable vises. I'm not about to notch my workbench. Ahh. I just realized I have too many vise projects and never enough time. At least the warm weather finally will let me paint a little faster. I also made an aluminum foil baking oven to put on my bbq grill. Such a smoother paint finish.

Can you tell me anything about this vise?
the Columbian vise is weird, says Made in USA, but never saw anything just like it.
paid $5.00 for the Craftsman book and the vise.
It's open lead screw, but for $4.00 I'm not too worried.

A google search came up with this identical americana vise on eBay

ok thanks, l did search e bay and google with that number, but didn't see it.
Looks light duty, but OK for that. (light use)
EDIT
Man, he wants a good bit for it compared to what I paid don't he?

LOL, here is another one.

Bagged: unless you need it for parts i'd probably pass even at $10 because it's missing one pipe jaw and probably the other one is a replacement. like Craptain said the chrome handle is looking like a Chinese Wilton. we say this because we know you don't need a vise because that vise could be fixed and used, but not a great flipper.

These two little guys joined my shop last night. My dad gave them too me from my Grandpa's stash of tools he helped my grandma clean up. Grandpa passed over 20 years ago but we never had a need to help grandma clean as she hadn't moved yet.

The clamp on will go on my sons bench I am planning to build this summer the other will help save my knuckles I hope when I am working on small stuff.

Neither has any makers marks I could find so if someone as some ideas I would love to hear them.

Lately I've been complaining that finding vintage iron vises around here is as hard as finding a 5 leaf clover.

Yesterday I went to an equipment sale at a tool & die shop that had shut down. The ad didn't appear until yesterday morning. My first question was about vises. The answer was that they were all sold last Thursday...a whole skid, including 3 Kurts for 500$.
The forklifts were all sold, all of the cabinets & benches were sold. What was left over was 3 phase equipment that I can't power up. However, I did make it out there with a steel flat cart.
The owner sent me to his sister company that was shutting down also. I managed to get a Heinrich #20 DP vise for 30$ (see pictures).

Maybe this season will be better than it has been. :fingersx:

Ps. Drives: Employees actually drilled holes in the spindle & guide rod. I'll post some pictures on your broken vise thread. It befuddles me how people do that!

That's what I'm thinking. The seller says he has the other jaw and that it says made in USA. But he won't send me any more pictures so I'm calling bluff.

Mark: sorry to hear even your DP vise had some damage. one tip to learn is to try and find those company's closing sales before the auctions or advertised sales start. i don't have a big enough circle of friends to get all that i would like to go to, but I've been to a few before even the pricing happened and hauled away some nice stuff after handing over the cash.

sort of like Joe Striper does every day only for me not nearly as often.

best way to start (or continue) your networking is to just ask everybody you see if they know of anybody closing their business or selling old tools. it's tedious and doesn't work very often, but when it does it really does and you'll walk out of a shop with all their big vises and quality tools before the others had a chance. sort of like when you got all those big 6 inch vises last year from one stop.

Jeremy: i really like the little hand vise that would be awesome for grinder work. no idea who made the little clamp on vise or the other one, but good to see they found a good home.

Bagged: how much is he asking? just curious and was the Wilton name making you call or email or just the word vise or vice now that you have the bug?

Question for you guys. When shopping for a vise how important is it to you to see an underneath shot of the vise similar this photo? It isn't something I usually include in my listings but I'm willing to change that if people like seeing it. Thanks for any feedback.

Somewhat important, especially if a long drive is involved. But it wouldn't be a deal breaker.

Balane: i usually ask for one and if they are that clean i'd always post one if i was selling it. what is that vise and how's the old stump doing these days? after all those pictures of the Renton vise pile you had i bet it's about disappeared or maybe it scared the carpenter ants away with all that activity?

cheer and best picture of the underside of a vise i think I've ever seen of a used vise.

Balane I would vote "for" as it comes with "Full Disclosure" . it's not a **** shot, but you can always try it at different angles and see if it makes a funny face...

Not exactly; you NEED to notch the bench for the gusset, but an option is to make a spacer block for the gusset to clear. I think I like this option vs bolting it to a steel top, wood has some "cush", and generally steel tops don't. I've seen too many busted ears... All to often there are high spots that create stress when you bolt down....

I had to clear the drip lip on the kitchen counter I used on my bench, and I used heavy washers on the three bolt holes so the vise actually has 3 point suspended contact. It's been that way over 25 years through some hard use too!

OK, thanks for the feedback. eBay allows me a dozen photos and it's hard to narrow that down when so many nice angles exist for vise photos. I'll start trying to get a bottom shot in my listings. I guess everybody likes a nice bottom. :)

I posted this one earlier in the thread but it's a Union Parker 4" that has broken jaw shelves. I took advantage of the situation as best I could by having Kevin cut me some oversize jaws for it. This was the very last vise I had to do in the Renton pile.

2 " walnut is what I have used in the past. Looks great on any bench. I wish I had a photo but lost them on my last puter crash. I sell the base with the vise...

I have a No. 2 parker as well and when I get around to doing it I'll for sure post up my walnut base along with it.

Just finished the restoration on my Parker 26X. It was a LOT of work. I know this type of restoration isnt for everyone, it's a little out there, but it is what I saw in my mind when I took possession. I want to replace the handle as well.

The inserts are like new on this big old Parker, and although it only has 6" jaws it weighs north of 185 lbs.

So without further ado...

Looks great, Joe! Did polishing up the slide introduce any slop? I've wanted to do what you did there but think I read on this forum that removing even the smallest amount of material from the slide will introduce slop ... is it true? Did you use a deburring wheel or ? Once again, lookin' good!!

I used a wire wheel and then 220/400/600 hand wheels. I'd agree about the slop on a smaller vise but on one this big it is still nice and tight.

Joe: would you like to tell us about how many hours you spent making that vise look like that? very nice work and you might even get your bride to let you set that one on the kitchen counter like the Emmert was for a while. Keeper or Not? and if it does make it to the kitchen counter how about a few more pictures from all sides.

Yes I want some good pics of this one. At 185 lbs though its a b to move around.

I have two very interested buyers. I think I'll get around $600 for it. Believe it or not it was a bigger pain to juat clean and degrease it. It is just at that size where anorher 20lbs and i couldnt handle it.

Good idea. Do you remember how much larger than the vise you cut the walnut?
